Okonomiyaki (savory Japanese pancake) Miyakoichi

Okonomiyaki Toichi, a 3-minute walk from the Shiden tram stop Karashimacho Station, is a casual Teppan-yaki restaurant where you can enjoy yakisoba (fried noodles) and okonomiyaki (Japanese savory pancake).

The restaurant has an open kitchen, and the sounds of food cooking and the savory aroma are said to whet your appetite. It seems to have a homey space where you can relax and feel at ease.

The photo shows the "yakisoba (fried noodles) Deluxe." The house-made custom-order noodles are slightly thicker than standard noodles, and are said to have a nice firm bite.

By grilling them on a Teppan-yaki, they seem to get a nicely crisp texture on the surface. It also comes packed with ingredients like shrimp, squid, and bean sprouts.

The photo shows the "Ganso Hirayaki," a signature item passed down since the shop first opened. It features a thinly stretched batter topped with plenty of cabbage and other ingredients, then folded in half and grilled in its own distinctive style.

Reviews also say the chewy batter is delicious, along with the cabbage, which is steamed to bring out more of its natural sweetness.

All I can say is, it was insanely delicious! The modan-yaki (modern-style okonomiyaki) in particular had amazing visual impact, and the balance of the fillings, noodles, and sauce inside was perfect. I had read reviews beforehand saying the sauce was outstanding, and that was absolutely true. It has an addictive flavor! I also got the yakisoba (fried noodles) deluxe-style, so it came loaded with ingredients.

タノシミンミンゼミ

I visited at night. They have a set that is like a senbero (budget set with drinks)! You can choose one main dish such as okonomiyaki (savory Japanese pancake) or yakisoba (stir-fried noodles), three pieces of oden (Japanese stew dishes), and one drink from alcohol or juice. I ordered the yakisoba, and it was delicious, with lots of shrimp and other seafood ingredients in it, and I also enjoyed all three pieces of oden!

Araoya

Araoya, located in Kumamoto City, is a yakisoba (Japanese stir-fried noodles) specialty restaurant about 4 minutes by car from Tokai Gakuenmae Station.

The interior mainly has counter seating. The decor is cute, with a bright feel that somewhat brings a cafe to mind. It is said to be easy to visit even alone, and a place where you can enjoy your meal in a relaxed setting.

The photo shows “Modern (Hiroshima-style).” It is a filling dish made by layering okonomiyaki batter over yakisoba, then topping it with a fried egg, mayonnaise, aonori (green laver), and sauce.

The noodles are pleasantly chewy, and they seem to go perfectly with the slightly tangy sauce.

When you break the soft-cooked fried egg on top of the yakisoba (fried noodles), the yolk mixes with the noodles and gives it a mild, rich taste.

The sauce coats the firm noodles well, and the more you chew, the more flavor comes through. It also comes with plenty of ingredients like shrimp, pork, and cabbage, making it a highly satisfying dish.

At a yakisoba (fried noodle) specialty shop, I ordered modan-yaki (savory pancake layered with yakisoba). It takes a little while. I waited and relaxed. It came out on a piping hot Teppan-yaki plate. More than modan-yaki, it felt like enjoying yakisoba. The yakisoba had some nice crispy bits here and there, and it was tasty. The sauce had a bit of tang. It was good.

I ordered yakisoba (fried noodles) and modan-yaki (savory pancake with noodles). The modan-yaki was Large size. It had plenty of cabbage so it felt healthy, the noodles were tasty, and the homemade sauce was also good. I finished it in no time. I should have made the yakisoba Large size too. Definitely coming back!

Motenasu Kyushu Jidoshado Tamana PA

Motenasu Kyushu Jidoshado Tamana PA is a restaurant located in the food court inside Tamana PA on the inbound lane of the Kyushu Expressway. It offers a wide range of casual menu items, including yakisoba (fried noodles).

The interior is spacious, making it an easy place to take a relaxed break while traveling. It uses a self service system where you buy a meal ticket and wait for your number to be called, so you can enjoy a casual meal with ease.

The photo shows the Yasai Tappuri Tamana Medamayaki Soba Gohan Set. The rich aroma of the sauce rises up and is said to really whet the appetite.

The chewy thick noodles are said to hold the slightly spicy sauce well. Since they stir-fry the meat and vegetables for each order before finishing the dish, you can enjoy it freshly made.

“Shin-Tamana ramen” is an original menu item at Tamana PA, where you can enjoy the rich body of Kumamoto-style tonkotsu (pork bone broth).

The soup has a solid savory taste, and people say the flavor of burnt garlic adds depth and makes it especially good.

The menu was pretty extensive, so it was hard to choose, but I went with the yakisoba (fried noodles), which seemed to be their top pick. I was also drawn in by the fried egg on top. The sweet and savory seasoning made it a solid B-kyu gourmet (casual local comfort food) option. Yeah, that really hits the spot.

On a junior colleague's recommendation, I tried the "Negi Mayo Medamayaki Yakisoba (fried noodles with green onion, mayonnaise, and a sunny-side-up egg)" at Tamana PA for the first time! I do not usually stop by this PA, so it felt like a fresh discovery. The savory aroma of the yakisoba and the rich, runny yolk of the medamayaki (sunny-side-up egg) were a perfect match, with both the flavor and texture spot on! The flavor of the negi mayo added a nice accent and made it even more appetizing.

Sofuren Mashiki Inter Ten

Sofuren Mashiki Inter Ten is a yakisoba (Japanese fried noodles) specialty restaurant near the Mashiki Kumamoto Airport IC, and it is popular as an easy place to stop for a meal while on the move.

In addition to counter seats, the restaurant has several table seats, and it is said to have a relaxed atmosphere where you can spend time comfortably.

The "yakisoba (fried noodles)" is heaped high on an iron plate. The noodles are thoroughly grilled on the surface, giving them a crisp, fragrant outside and a chewy texture inside.

The sweet and savory secret sauce, passed down since the restaurant first opened, coats the noodles well, and the more you eat, the more addictive the flavor becomes.

The "D Set" is a popular set that pairs yakisoba (fried noodles) with rice and aji fry (fried horse mackerel). The aji fry is said to come freshly fried, fragrant, and just right as a nice break between bites.

The yakisoba, coated in a rich sauce, also goes well with plain white rice.

I ordered the yakisoba in a Large size with a fried egg topping and a small bowl of rice. The bean sprouts and thin noodles are grilled on an iron plate, with some crispy bits that add a nice toasted flavor, while the sauce gives it a juicy finish, making it really delicious. This is the true essence of Hita yakisoba (Hita-style fried noodles).^_^I’d like to visit again the next time I’m back home.^_^

・Yakisoba (fried noodles)
It arrives on a piping hot iron plate. In a very Kyushu style, the sauce is on the sweet side, and it goes perfectly with the lightly charred noodles and bean sprouts. I highly recommend adding egg and shiso (perilla) as toppings! You'll see why when you order it. It is also quite filling, and this one dish alone was enough to leave me full.
