[Kagoshima Prefecture, Kagoshima City (around Tenmonkan-dori Station)] Restaurants popular for shabu-shabu

Tonkatsu and shabu-shabu. Kurobuta Fukuya

Tonkatsu to, Shabu-shabu. Kurobuta Fukuya is located a 1-minute walk from Tenmonkan-dori Station on the Kagoshima City Tram. You can enjoy shabu-shabu and tonkatsu made with kurobuta (Berkshire pork).

The interior has a Japanese modern design with an irori (sunken hearth), and it also has Private room seating that is perfect for group dining.

At this restaurant, shabu-shabu featuring Chamiton (tea-fed pork) and kurobuta (Berkshire pork) is popular. In addition to set menus that come with soba to finish, you can also choose an A la carte menu with just the shabu-shabu.

The pork, swished through dashi that has been slowly warmed over charcoal, is packed with flavor and so tasty that you can finish it in no time.

The tonkatsu (breaded pork cutlet) at this restaurant is made with pork aged for a certain period and special breadcrumbs baked just for it.

It is said to be fried to a crisp without feeling greasy, letting you fully enjoy the natural flavor of the pork.

・Chami-ton (tea-fed pork)・kurobuta (Berkshire pork) A la carte shabu-shabu tasting comparison
First, the Chami-ton. It is the meat from the back running from the chest to the lower back, with a fine grain and beautiful look. The broth itself, slowly drawn out over charcoal, is really delicious. Coat it well in the broth enriched with the meat's flavor, then take a big bite together with the crisp harihari-negi vegetables.

I tried the most popular course, and it was so filling with a great variety of dishes. Every dish was delicious, and I was very Manzoku. For the main shabu-shabu (Japanese hot pot), I could compare two different kinds, and the tonkatsu (pork cutlet) served with salt was tender and very good.

Kurobuta Fukuya Honten

Tenmonkan-dori, the area around the station in Kagoshima City's largest downtown district, is a popular area packed with shopping facilities and restaurants.

In the Tenmonkan-dori area, Kurobuta Fukuya Honten is the place to enjoy shabu-shabu and tonkatsu. The interior has a traditional Japanese style, centered around wood tones.

The pork for shabu-shabu (Japanese hotpot) is carefully hand-sliced by skilled chefs. It has just the right thickness, making it really satisfying to eat.

Reviews also say it tastes great either on its own or dipped in egg yolk like sukiyaki.

The course menu that lets you compare Kagoshima-produced "kurobuta (Berkshire pork)" and Okinawa-produced "chamibuta (tea-fed pork)" is popular.

It also comes with "irori-yaki (charcoal hearth grilling)" and tonkatsu, and the volume is said to be enough for total Manzoku.

We ordered the shabu-shabu course with Charmin-buta (Charmin pork) and kuro-buta (Berkshire pork). For the shabu-shabu, you can change up the flavor with dashi broth and egg yolk (Sukiya-style). The fat on the kuro-buta was sweet, and the Charmin-buta was slightly thicker-cut, and both were delicious. The soba to finish the meal was also very good.

The shabu-shabu is wild. You swish hand-cut, thick slices of kurobuta (Berkshire pork) in dashi stock slowly warmed over charcoal, and first of all, the meat is great, the fat is sweet, but it is not heavy. It really gives you that feeling of “I’m eating meat!” while still going down easy and feeling light on the body. The fact that the heat source is charcoal really gets you too, and it looks exciting from the start.

Kagoshima Kurobuta (Berkshire pork) Shabu-shabu Specialty Restaurant Kuro no Kiwami

Located about a 5-minute walk from Tenmonkandori Station, Kagoshima Kurobuta Shabu-Shabu Senmonten Kuro no Kiwami is a restaurant where you can enjoy shabu-shabu and local dishes from Kagoshima Prefecture.

The interior has a stylish wa-modern (Japanese modern) design. There are Private rooms for 4 to 10 people, so it works well for many different occasions.

The restaurant’s shabu-shabu comes in two types: "kuroge Wagyu (Japanese Black Wagyu)" graded A4 or higher, and "Kagoshima Kurobuta (Kagoshima Berkshire pork)" from Kagoshima Prefecture. You can also enjoy changing up the flavor with "kurobuta miso (black pork miso)" and yuzu kosho (yuzu chili paste).

Many reviews also said that the finishing zosui (rice porridge) and soba made with a soup infused with the flavors of the broth and pork are outstanding.

Kibinago sashimi (silver-stripe round herring sashimi) and Satsuma-age (deep-fried fish cake), both local dishes from Kagoshima Prefecture, are also popular. The seasoning brings out the natural flavors of the ingredients, making them perfect with drinks.

They also offer course menus where you can enjoy shabu-shabu and local dishes at the same time.

ワンチロ

First of all, the dashi broth is delicious! It has a nice sweetness and tastes great even on its own. There were ponzu sauce, yuzu kosho (yuzu pepper paste), and salt on the table. Wrapping the vegetables in the meat and eating them was pure happiness. To finish, I chose noodles and enjoyed the thin straight noodles. It was a great meal.

雑食をたる

・Kurobuta (Berkshire pork) shabu-shabu
The firm texture of the pork and the rich flavor of the fat are excellent. It is rich but not heavy, so I was glad I could keep eating without getting tired of it. Along with the kurobuta shabu-shabu, I also ordered boiled dumplings and noodles to finish. The boiled dumplings here are chewy and juicy. A nice balance. The noodles also picked up the good flavor of the pork, making them a great way to finish.

[Kagoshima City, Kagoshima Prefecture (around Takamibashi Station)] Restaurants popular for shabu-shabu

Kagoshima Kurobuta (Berkshire pork) Roppakutei

Kagoshima Kurobuta Roppakutei is a restaurant where you can enjoy shabu-shabu made with Roppaku Kurobuta (Berkshire pork with six white points) from Kagoshima Prefecture. The interior is spacious, and you can enjoy your meal in a relaxed atmosphere.

The restaurant is a 3-minute walk from Kagoshima-Chuo Station and about a 4-minute walk from Takamibashi Station.

Roppaku Kurobuta (Berkshire black pork) is known for having none of the off notes typical of pork, and because its fat has a high melting point, it tastes light and easy to eat.

The shabu-shabu broth uses their special kogane dashi (golden broth). It has a refined taste and is so good you will want to drink every last drop of the soup.

The pork for the tonkatsu (Japanese breaded pork cutlet) is aged in house. They fry it in a copper pot, so even thick cut pieces turn out moist and tender.

There was also a review saying that pouring dashi (Japanese soup stock) over it at the end and eating it like ochazuke (tea over rice) makes it enjoyable twice over.

オムライスおにぎり

This restaurant serves Kurobuta (Berkshire pork) shabu-shabu, a Kagoshima specialty. I ordered a course meal, and I got to enjoy not only the shabu-shabu but also other local specialties like satsuma-age (deep-fried fish cake) and lightly seared chicken. The staff were warm and welcoming too, so I could relax and enjoy the meal!

To wrap up the trip, we visited Roppakutei for shabu-shabu. The meat was great of course, and when enjoyed with the restaurant's own kogane-dashi (golden broth), unlike ponzu sauce, you can really taste the flavor of the meat. I closed my eyes and savored every bit of it.
