Izakaya Amimoto Bettei

About a 3-minute walk from Katsuyamacho Station, Iyoriya Amimoto Bettei in Matsuyama City's Ichibancho is a seafood izakaya run directly by a fisheries company.

It is popular for dishes made with high-quality fresh fish from Ehime. The modern interior also includes a Private room that can accommodate up to 10 people.

They offer a wide range of a la carte dishes that pair perfectly with Japanese sake, and you can enjoy fresh seafood brought in daily from the fishing port.

A nice point is that they take the seafood out of the fish tank and cook it right after you order, so you can enjoy seafood with outstanding freshness.

The specialty at this restaurant is mackerel dishes. You can enjoy them in a wide range of preparations, including sashimi, grilled dishes, and simmered dishes.

Among them, the recommended choice is the "saba sugata-zukuri (whole mackerel sashimi platter)," made with live mackerel. The mackerel, which was moving until just before preparation, has an outstanding bite and is said to have a flavor that keeps you coming back for more.

First, we toasted with beer and ordered a few dishes. In the end, everything was delicious, but the clear standout was the sashimi. First of all, the freshness was incredibly good, and every piece of fish had nice firm flesh. This is what real bouncy texture means! Each thick cut slice had a satisfying springy bite. The shochu (Japanese distilled spirit) we were drinking with it kept going down easy too... A place with great food really is the best.

As someone who likes counter seats, I felt lucky to be shown to the counter! The mackerel sashimi, goma-saba (mackerel with sesame sauce), and Sea Bream rice were all excellent no matter what I tried. The place had the feel of a restaurant that is probably popular with locals too.

Tai-meshi Maki (Sea Bream Rice) Matsuyama Ten

About a 1-minute walk from Matsuyamashi Station, Taimeshi Maki Matsuyama Ten is an izakaya where you can enjoy tai-meshi (Sea Bream rice) and local sake, with a focus on Uwajima regional cuisine.

Inside, the restaurant has a calm space with a classic Japanese feel, complete with a large counter and zashiki (tatami seating). If you want to enjoy the live feel of the cooking, the counter seats are recommended.

Uwajima specialties like tai-meshi (Sea Bream rice) and tai soba (Sea Bream noodles) are the signatures here, but they also offer a full lineup of local Uwajima dishes that pair perfectly with drinks.

The "Tezukuri Jako-ten" is made by grinding small fish such as hotaru-jako from the Uwakai Sea off Ehime into a paste and deep-frying it. People say it is packed with umami and has a moist, satisfying taste.

After taking time to enjoy the a la carte dishes and drinks, many people seem to choose Sea Bream rice To finish.

They prepare fresh madai (red sea bream) with a nice springy texture, and the combo of slightly sweet dashi soy sauce and egg is said to be irresistible. It is popular served in a Gozen set style, so you can enjoy it along with several kinds of local dishes.

A Sea Bream rice restaurant near Matsuyama-shi Station. The interior has a calm Japanese feel, with counter seats and ozashiki (tatami seating)! They offer not only Uwajima taimeshi (Sea Bream rice), but also Sea Bream soba, local Gozen set meals, mikan (mandarin orange) juice, local sake, and Dogo Beer, with plenty of menu items that let you get a taste of the area. The jakoten (deep-fried fish cake) was freshly fried, with a crispy surface and a flaky inside. After one bite, I knew it was the kind of flavor that goes perfectly with alcohol, so I ordered Japanese sake. The pairing of the piping hot snack and chilled sake was the best, and I had a really great time.

Sumirobata Komiya Matsuyama

Sumirobata Komiya Matsuyama is an izakaya where you can enjoy robatayaki (fireside grilling) cooked over charcoal and local Ehime cuisine, about a 3-minute walk from Okaido Station.

The stylish interior is part of its appeal, making it a great pick for anyone who cares about atmosphere. It also has fully private rooms with doors, so it is recommended when you want to relax with friends or family.

For robatayaki (Japanese fireside grilling) and genshi-yaki (primitive style grilling), two traditional Japanese cooking methods, they use the finest binchotan (high-grade white charcoal).

Because the ingredients are grilled directly over charcoal, they strike an excellent balance of natural flavor and smoky aroma. The Ootoro Ma-iwashi (extra fatty sardine) is especially popular for its rich fat content.

It is also said to have a wide selection of dishes that pair well with drinks, including grilled items, fried dishes, and shabu-shabu.

Along with local Ehime-ken (Ehime Prefecture) Japanese sake and standard beers, they also offer a good lineup of original sours made with Ehime citrus fruits. A la carte options are available, of course, and they also offer All you can drink plans.

take3949

The sumiyaki (charcoal grilled) chicken thigh goes great with yuzu kosho (yuzu pepper paste). They grate cheese over the asparagus when they serve it. Everything tasted great, and it was a very Manzoku restaurant. The Clay Pot rice also looked delicious, and next time I want to try the rice too. They also have assorted varieties available of Japanese whisky, and I was Manzoku with the drinks as well.

The interior was bright and very clean. Since this is a restaurant serving robatayaki (fireside grilling) and Ehime local cuisine, I ordered the recommended o-toro ma-iwashi (premium Japanese sardine). It was outstanding, with excellent freshness and rich fat. Every à la carte dish was a good choice, and I felt the overall standard of the restaurant was very high.

Warayaki Katsuo Tataki Myojinmaru Matsuyama Nibancho Ten

Warayaki Katsuo Tataki Myojinmaru Matsuyama Nibancho Ten is a popular izakaya where you can enjoy the local cuisine of Tosa in Kochi Prefecture and local sake, and it is also well liked by locals.

In addition to counter seats where you can watch the warayaki (straw-fire grilling) cooking process, they also offer table seating and fully private rooms, among other seating options.

They offer a lineup of boldly grilled wara-yaki (straw-fired) dishes, and the specialty is katsuo no tataki (seared bonito).

Since they start grilling it over straw only after your order comes in, you can enjoy the fresh-off-the-grill toasty aroma. The cuts of bonito are thick and satisfyingly hearty, and people say the simple seasoning with salt lets you enjoy it in a refreshing way.

Along with straw-fire grilling, they also offer a full range of local Kochi Prefecture dishes, including brand Kuroge Wagyu "Shimanto Gyu (Shimanto beef)" and the local specialty chicken "Tosa Jiro," so you can enjoy ingredients that represent Kochi.

The photo shows "utsubo (moray eel) no Kara-age." It is packed with collagen and goes great with local Kochi sake.

The restaurant has a lively atmosphere, the staff are cheerful and pleasant, and the food comes out quickly, so the whole meal feels smooth and stress free. The izakaya menu is also extensive, and you can enjoy seafood other than katsuo (bonito) as well as dishes made with local ingredients, so I think this is a place where both drinking parties and families can leave fully Manzoku. It was a famous restaurant that offered an experience beyond expectations, and one I would definitely want to stop by again when visiting Matsuyama.

The katsuo no tataki (seared bonito) was incredibly delicious! We ordered an assortment, and each slice was big and thick! It was tasty enough to leave us fully Manzoku. Every dish looked so good that it was hard to choose what to order, but everything we picked was delicious and none of it missed the mark. There were also lots of unusual drinks, which made them fun to choose from.

NINOMIYA

Starting with citrus based drinks unique to Matsuyama, you can enjoy good seafood and tai-meshi (Sea Bream rice). Every dish is reasonably priced and very tasty. The wara-yaki (straw searing) in particular has a great aroma, and it really shows the freshness of the ingredients and the skill of the preparation. The staff were lively and energetic, and I had a great time comfortably enjoying drinks at the restaurant.

I used to avoid citrusy beer without even trying it, but this place made me a fan! The Sui JIN Soda also comes with iyokan (Japanese summer orange), giving it a different flavor that was also very tasty. We had sashimi and iyo-gyu (Iyo beef), and our first dinner in Matsuyama left us fully satisfied with local ingredients you can only get here.

What you will want to enjoy with the drinks from Ehime is the restaurant’s a la carte dishes, made with plenty of local ingredients.

The lineup is packed with ultra-fresh Setouchi (Seto Inland Sea) seafood and rare delicacies that pair well with alcohol. The visually striking “Kame no Te” is said to be a popular local shellfish dish.

kazu9213

I stopped by this place after a short walk from Dogo Onsen (Dogo Hot Springs). It had the feel of a local izakaya (Japanese pub), and the inside was homey and calm, making it a very comfortable place to be. The iyokan (Japanese citrus) highball was crisp and tasty, and I quickly ordered a second one. Each dish was carefully prepared, with a warm touch that came through, and everything was delicious.

Among the obanzai (Kyoto-style home-style side dishes), they had unusual items you do not often see at other places, like kame no te (gooseneck barnacles), which was interesting. I tried all kinds of dishes, including fried oysters, basashi (horse sashimi), and hamo (pike conger), but the one I really want to recommend is the aburi saba-zushi (seared mackerel sushi)! It had no off notes at all, and the saba-zushi with its nicely balanced richness was excellent. It also paired perfectly with Japanese sake, and I ended up ordering another round.

Shimanami Chokusou (direct from Shimanami) Sea Bream and Seafood Specialty Restaurant Taisho

About a 5-minute walk from Dogo Onsen Station, Taisho is an izakaya popular for seafood and local dishes centered on madai (Sea Bream), delivered directly from the Setouchi Shimanami fishing grounds.

The interior, made with natural wood, is said to have a relaxed atmosphere where you can take your time and enjoy a drink.

Seafood sourced from the Shimanami Gyoba (Shimanami fishing grounds), an area rich in natural bounty. Many say it is fresh and thick cut, with great flavor that pairs well with drinks.

The raw oysters, taken straight from the tank before serving, are said to be plump and satisfyingly meaty.

Madadai (Sea Bream), one of Ehime's signature ingredients, is known for its firm flesh, a characteristic of the Setouchi (Seto Inland Sea) region.

What makes it appealing is that you can enjoy it not only as sashimi but also in many styles such as wara-yaki (straw searing) and carpaccio. The thinly sliced madadai is served with plenty of yakumi (condiments) and house-made ponzu sauce.

ちゃるめら44

First, of course, the Sea Bream I came for! It was plump and very delicious. The shiokara (salt-cured seafood) goes so well that you just keep drinking Japanese sake. The Japanese sake lineup is nice too. The aji (horse mackerel) ikezukuri (whole fish sashimi presentation), which I personally love, was just as good as I had hoped. I want them to let each person have a whole plate. Also, unexpectedly, the kani cream korokke (crab cream croquette) was piping hot and rich, and it became a great memory that everyone fought over it.

yHyO

Of course they had Ehime specialty jakoten (fried fish cake), along with lots of interesting dishes such as shiokara (salt-cured seafood) made from Sea Bream liver, which can only be prepared with very fresh Sea Bream. There were many fish and shellfish in the tank, and they would make sashimi from them, so everything was incredibly fresh. The next time I go to Dogo Onsen (Dogo Hot Springs), I’ll visit on an empty stomach.

It is made with high quality ingredients, and is said to offer a juicy yet delicate taste.

くろぐれ23403

Every course menu item was delicious, and I ended up adding an extra order of asa-biki no kimo (fresh morning-prepared liver). The pacing of the dishes was good, the All you can drink selection was wide, and the service was pleasant, so I was very Manzoku.

The photo shows the “Today’s sashimi assortment.” The selection changes daily, and one of the highlights is getting to taste recommended fish that arrived On-the-Day.

utakata.utage

They also have menu items other than kushiage (deep-fried skewers), so this is also a good pick for people who want to drink with fewer fried dishes. I like the fine, light batter, and they have all kinds of unusual skewers. My favorites are avocado, sunagimo (gizzard) with celery, and chikuwa (tube-shaped fish cake). They also had seasonal fuki no to (butterbur sprouts), which I love, and it really goes well with drinks. The hotate (scallop) with uni sauce was nicely rare, which was good.

みやchan♡

They started us off with an otoshi (small appetizer) of fish grilled over a shichirin (small charcoal grill)! For sashimi, we had mikan hamachi (citrus-fed amberjack) and sanma (Pacific saury) sashimi! It was incredibly fresh!! The a la carte dishes were also delicious, served freshly fried and freshly grilled! And the Sea Bream kamameshi (pot-cooked rice) was seriously the best, so if you visit this restaurant, I really want everyone to try it!!

まこたけ

The tachiuo (beltfish) is a local catch landed off the coast of Matsuyama, and the mikan hamachi (amberjack fed with mikan citrus) is hamachi raised on feed blended with Ehime mikan. Though it is farmed, the meat has fine rich fat, with a flaky yet moist and tender texture, and a faint citrus aroma that makes it excellent. After enjoying beer for a while with the local fish, we switched to Japanese sake. We enjoyed Shirokawago and Yuzume in turns, with Hakkaisan mixed in from time to time.

Tonight, I took my time and enjoyed a relaxed drink. I always order seseri (chicken neck) when I eat yakitori, and I like it with salt. With both counter and table seating, it looks like a great choice for all kinds of occasions, whether dining alone or in a group.

They offer a kushiyaki menu with a variety of skewers made from fresh motsu (offal), which you can enjoy with carefully selected Japanese sake or shochu.

Choices include the rare jotan (premium tongue base) and kashira (pork cheek), which is tender and juicy, and each one lets you enjoy the natural flavor of the ingredient.

While you wait for the motsu skewers to finish grilling, they also offer a full lineup of quick dishes you can casually order with a drink.

The photo shows the “bara-saki nankotsu nikomi (stewed rib cartilage).” The cartilage is simmered until the bones dissolve completely, making this a collagen-rich dish with melt-in-your-mouth green onions and black pepper.

KichiTomo

This is a rare place in Matsuyama where you can enjoy grilled skewers of buta no motsu (pork offal). The skewers are grilled with a slightly sweet sauce, and they taste great with beer. The atmosphere is calm and relaxed, making it just right when you want to go out for a quick drink. The pork tongue was especially good.

ぴた。

The recommended motsu (offal) for the day were kashira (pork cheek) and harami (skirt steak). The bold seasoning with a fairly strong hit of salt, of course, goes great with alcohol, and the way they grill the outside well while keeping the inside tender and juicy is also really good. No, seriously, this place is really good.

We ordered a few small plates and an assorted sashimi platter! We also ordered Mitsuhama-yaki (Mitsuhama-style savory pancake), a local specialty from Ehime! Since I’m from Kansai, I eat a lot of flour-based dishes. It looked like they also had Hot Pot and other items, so next time I’d like to try the Hot Pot.

Kitashirakawa

I had a drinking party at Sangyoku Kaisen Izakaya Kingyo-san in Okaido, Matsuyama. This is a photo of the elegant otoshi (small appetizer). A dish that seemed to be small ika no shiokara (salted squid guts) was unusual for Matsuyama, and it left an impression on me. It offers good value, so I’d like to come back again.

It was very lively with lots of young people and families. They also have a wide selection of Japanese sake, and it is fun to compare different kinds. The food lineup has plenty of dishes that go well with drinks, from yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) to sashimi. Among them, the Sea Bream sashimi was especially thick cut and very tasty.

ポンポさん

I was shown to a Private room, so I could talk comfortably without worrying about others. This time, I made a reservation for a course meal. There was plenty of food, and the selection of drinks was wide. It was also close to the Okaido entrance, and the restaurant had a comfortable atmosphere, so I think it would work well for all kinds of get-togethers.
