Aburi-dokoro Shono-ya Ekie Ten

"Aburidokoro Shonoya Ekie Ten," located inside JR Hiroshima Station, is an izakaya where yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) and aburiyaki (flame grilled dishes) are popular.

The interior has table and counter seating. They also offer a selection of Hiroshima local sake, making it a good choice for a Quick Drink after work.

You can order yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) from just 1 skewer. They hand-skewer Special chicken selected for each cut every day and slowly grill it over binchotan (high-grade white charcoal).

The far-infrared effect of the charcoal fire locks in the flavor and cooks it up juicy.

The lunch menu, where you can fully enjoy the great taste of chicken, also offers a wide variety of options.

The "Yakitori-ju" in the photo comes with miso soup, salad, and pickles, and is topped with an assortment of four kinds of yakitori, including negima (chicken and scallion skewer), tsukune (chicken meatball skewer), and sunagimo (gizzard), which you enjoy mixed with egg yolk.

We ordered skewers like sunazuri (gizzard), bonjiri (tail), and shiro reba (white liver), and every one was fragrant and juicy. The shiro reba in particular had a melt-in-your-mouth texture and was delicious.

くろちょる

The shiro reba (white liver) is a must. Garlic, sunazuri (gizzard), pecoross, and yuzu ika (squid with yuzu) are my regular picks. Most people usually come solo or in small groups for a quick drink, so it is easy to drop in.

The kushiyaki (grilled skewers) are so good you can tell each one is carefully prepared. The à la carte dishes also come in a wide range, and choosing what to order is the hard part. I tried all sorts of things, and every dish was ◎. I want to keep coming back and work my way through the whole menu.

Popular places to enjoy yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) in Fukuyama, Hiroshima Prefecture

Kushiya

Kushiya is an izakaya (Japanese pub) about a 13-minute walk from JR Fukuyama Station.

The interior has a comforting atmosphere that helps you relax. In addition to Sunken kotatsu seating where you can stretch out and unwind, there are also counter seats and ozashiki (tatami room seating).

The menu is full of yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) carefully skewered by the owner.

They use a light sauce, and finish each skewer by repeating the process of dipping it in the sauce and grilling it. They also add a moderate char so the sauce clings better.

Another draw of this place is its wide variety of tsukune (chicken meatballs).

A top recommended item is the “Tsukimi Tsukune,” a dish where you coat the thick tsukune in plenty of egg yolk before eating it. The crunchy texture of the cartilage is said to be addictive.

I had been curious about this place for a long time. Every dish was seasoned in a way that speaks to drinkers. True to the name Kushiya, every skewer I tried was delicious. The staff were also great, and I had a good time getting pleasantly drunk.

Once you step inside, you will likely find a lovely yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) restaurant bustling with local regulars. The appetizers also come with a nice touch of creativity. Every yakitori skewer is excellent.
