On a weekday, I spontaneously decided to head to Karuizawa. While taking a stroll through the woods, I discovered a new Asanoya store near the entrance of the Manpei Hotel grounds, which hadn’t been there during my last visit last year.
After doing some research, I found out that it opened during the Golden Week this year. It seems to be a seasonal store operating from late July through August. Asanoya was recently acquired by Mori Trust and became a subsidiary of Manpei Hotel, likely as part of a PMI strategy to realize synergy effects.
At around 3 PM, the selection of bread was not very extensive. I picked up the "Tomato and Mozzarella" for JPY 346, drawn in by a sign warning that the cherry tomatoes inside could burst easily.
I also added a "Smooth Cream Bun" for JPY 291 for my companion. We headed to the café terrace at Manpei Hotel, which I visit almost every time.
The "Tomato and Mozzarella" is a ball-shaped fried bread filled with two cherry tomatoes and mozzarella cheese. After returning to Tokyo, I reheated it, and the combination of the melted cheese, fresh tomatoes, and fried pizza dough was delightful. It was simple yet quite Italian in flavor.
I was careful while eating to avoid any bursting tomatoes, and thankfully, I managed to enjoy it without incident. My companion found the cream bun delicious, filled with custard cream containing vanilla bean specks.
Additionally, I learned that the "Tomato and Mozzarella" is also available at the Grandsta in Tokyo Station and the Jiyugaoka location. Next time, I’d like to try it with basil and salami.
