I indulged in the limited August lunch set at Sacre Fleur, located right in the heart of the summer resort Karuizawa. This meal was surprisingly hearty and luxurious for a vacation spot. At JPY 4,000 per person, the value is truly exceptional.
First up was the tartare made from Shinshu Alps beef, which was fresh and creamy, perfectly complemented by a tangy sauce that’s just right for summer. Next, a slice of pâté de campagne added a rich French flavor that really grabbed my attention from the start. The appetizer was accompanied by a green salad and French fries, adding to the overall volume, leading up to the main event: the steak.
The main dish was a 150g Australian strip loin. But this wasn’t just any steak. It was served sizzling on a hot stone, creating a delightful sound and aroma as it cooked to my preferred doneness. This was truly an "experiential French" dining moment. I savored the steak while choosing between rice or bread to accompany it. Just this alone would have left me completely satisfied, but the addition of crème brûlée at the end was a delightful indulgence. With its crispy surface and melting sweetness, I couldn’t help but think, "I’m so glad I came to Karuizawa."
While enjoying French cuisine in a resort is nice, this place truly allows you to appreciate the joy of eating meat. It’s a must-try if you’re visiting. The thrill of devouring a strip loin on a hot stone in the middle of summer in Karuizawa is an experience like no other. This is, in my opinion, the ultimate summer resort lunch.
