Kumamoto Prefecture [Aso Area] Gyudon (beef Rice bowl)!

Yamayasu

Yama Yasu is a popular specialty restaurant for akaushi (Japanese Brown beef) dishes in Takamori, Aso District, Kumamoto Prefecture, known for its delicious and very striking beef Rice bowl.

The interior is said to be a relaxing space, with beautiful mountain views from the windows. There also appears to be a large parking lot in front of the restaurant.

All of the akaushi (Japanese Brown beef) served at this restaurant comes from clearly identified producers, and they use only A3~A5 grade beef from the prefecture.

The "Today's Mega Akaushi Rice bowl" is said to have a nice springy texture and rich flavor, and it goes perfectly with the sweet and savory sauce and rice.

If you want to enjoy the meat’s natural flavor in a simple, direct way, the "akaushi (Japanese brown beef) Strip loin steak" is also a great choice.

It has a different texture and taste from the meat served in gyudon (beef rice bowl) style, with tasty fat and a clean finish. There is also a set menu that comes with rice, miso soup, and salad.

This time, I ordered the Today's Mega akaushi (Japanese brown cattle) Rice bowl. The akaushi covering the entire bowl, made up of various cuts, has a rich lean meat flavor, yet the fat is not heavy, so it stays light and easy to eat. The sweet and savory sauce and onsen tamago (soft-cooked hot spring egg) bring out the meat's flavor even more. The mega size comes with plenty of both rice and meat, making it a highly Manzoku bowl.

This time, I definitely wanted to try the steak, so I ordered it. The pickles were served buffet style, with daikon radish kimchi and lightly salted eggplant. The steak was tender, and I really enjoyed the rich flavor of the meat. I finished all 180g with no trouble. I recommend it.

Minamiaso Organic Cafe ASOBIO

An organic cafe where you can enjoy dishes unique to the Kumamoto and Aso area, such as gyudon (beef Rice bowl) and curry made with akaushi (Japanese Brown beef).

The cafe is located along Prefectural Route 28, and the stylish interior is said to offer views of the mountains of Aso. It is popular as a place where you can relax and enjoy your meal at a leisurely pace.

The akagyu (Japanese brown beef) Beef Rice bowl made with Minamiaso organic rice is served with a secret sauce and meat miso.

The lean akagyu has no strong distinctive flavor, and breaking the onsen tamago (hot spring egg) into it makes the taste more mellow. The "Akagyu Don Set" comes with miso soup and pickles.

Reviews say the “Special Set,” which lets you enjoy an akaushi Rice bowl and dago-jiru (Kumamoto-style dumpling soup) together, is also popular.

dago-jiru is a Kumamoto specialty soup made by simmering freshly harvested root vegetables from Minamiaso in akaushi broth. It is packed with large chunks of ingredients and is said to be very filling.

・Akaushi (Japanese brown beef) Rice bowl Special
The akaushi was light and tasty, topped with what seemed to be a special miso sauce. It also came with wasabi, and my favorite way to eat it was with plenty of wasabi and the onsen tamago (soft cooked egg) mixed in.

Ever since coming to Kumamoto, I had been wanting to try dago-jiru (dumpling soup), and the dago-jiru here was outstanding. Because this version includes akaushi (Japanese brown beef), the beef's rich flavor comes through in the soup, and it was seriously delicious. (It was the best dago-jiru I’ve ever had.) Of course, the akaushi Rice bowl was also really tasty, with juicy meat and a satisfying portion size.

Akaushi Don Senmonten Gotoya Aso Ten

Akagyu-don Senmonten Gotoya Aso Ten is an akagyu-don (red wagyu beef rice bowl) specialty restaurant with 3 restaurants in Aso, Kumamoto Prefecture. You can enjoy rice bowls, curry, udon, and more made with Kumamoto akagyu (red wagyu beef).

The interior has a calm atmosphere, and the smooth seating guidance and service have made it popular with guests.

The gyudon (beef Rice bowl) is tender and juicy, and it is said to be so good that you will not be able to stop eating.

They use their traditional nikumiso (seasoned meat miso) and a rich dashi soy sauce tare, giving it a well balanced flavor that is not too strong. If you order it as a set, it comes with dago-jiru (dumpling soup) with akaushi (Japanese brown cattle) in it.

In addition to gyudon (beef Rice bowl), the menu also offers plenty of ways to enjoy akaushi (Japanese Brown beef), including dashi broth soba and udon, curry, and more.

Akaushi, a rare brand of beef raised in vast natural surroundings, is known for its meat quality, with a high proportion of lean meat and a moderate amount of fat. It has no off notes typical of beef and is said to be a healthy variety.

I ordered the Aso Takana (pickled mustard greens from Aso) Akaushi (Japanese brown beef) Rice bowl set. It was really delicious. It was my first time trying Akaushi, and it was melt-in-your-mouth good, with an irresistible combination of takana rice and onsen tamago (hot spring egg). I’d like to visit again when I’m in the area.

I ordered it as a set with dago-jiru (dumpling soup)! Akaushi (Japanese brown beef) was not greasy and had a light taste, so I could keep eating it with ease! The meat miso-like condiment served on the side added a nice accent and was delicious.

・Akaushi Rice bowl
It comes with roast beef, onsen tamago (soft-cooked hot spring egg), wasabi, and shiso (perilla leaf). The rare-cooked akaushi (Japanese brown beef) is topped with a sweet and savory sauce. The lean red meat is a little firm. The wasabi and shiso go very well with it. It was quite filling, and I ended up completely full.

I rushed in at Kumamoto Airport and had an akaushi Rice bowl (Japanese brown wagyu beef) that is local to the area! The rare akaushi was tender, and each bite really brought out its meaty flavor. It also came with niku miso (seasoned meat miso), which made a nice accent. And I also had a Ginpaku Highball, a shochu drink that is a Kumamoto specialty. It was so clean and easy to drink that I got hooked.

Yoshinoya Kumamoto Eki Ten

Yoshinoya Kumamoto Eki Ten, about a 3-minute walk from Kumamoto Station, is a long-running gyudon (beef Rice bowl) chain that has been loved by many fans since its founding in 1899. It is one of Japan’s most iconic gyudon restaurants.

Inside, there are counter and table seats. It is a good choice when you want to casually enjoy a gyudon.

From simple gyudon (beef Rice bowl) to versions topped with kimchi or cheese, there is a wide range of options.

On top of the rice, they pile plenty of thinly sliced beef and onions simmered in a secret sauce. They also have beni shoga (pickled red ginger) that you can add to your taste.

If you want to really enjoy the rich flavor of beef, the gyusara (beef plate), where the rice and beef are served separately, and the beef Teppan-yaki Yakiniku set meal are recommended.

The beef, sizzling on the skillet, goes perfectly with the sweet and savory sauce and shiraga-negi (thinly shredded white leek).

・Regular Gyudon (beef Rice bowl) & Egg
The beef is tender and full of flavor, and when the sweetness of the onion and sauce mixes with the raw egg, it becomes mellow and rich. The egg white gives the whole bowl of rice a smooth, slightly thick texture, making it easy to eat. The sharp heat of shichimi togarashi (Japanese seven-spice chili pepper) adds a nice accent and pulls the flavors together.

I had the morning gyudon (beef Rice bowl) set. It opens early, which is really helpful. The set comes with gyudon, miso soup, and one small side dish. You can choose from egg, salad, oshinko (pickled vegetables), and one more option. I think the gyudon is not too sweet. I also appreciate that it is well balanced nutritionally.

Sukiya Kumamoto Shinshigai Ten

"Sukiya Kumamoto Shinshigai Ten," right next to the Shiden tram’s Karashimacho Station, is a gyudon (beef Rice bowl) chain restaurant with the largest number of restaurants in Japan among beef bowl chains. You can enjoy a wide variety of gyudon made with a focus on food safety and quality.

In addition to counter seating, there are also many table seats, so it looks easy to use whether you are alone or in a group.

They also get good reviews for the wide range of gyudon (beef Rice bowl) options, with six sizes to choose from, from "Mini" to "Mega."

The photo shows the "Oroshi Ponzu Gyudon (grated daikon radish with ponzu beef Rice bowl)." It is a dish topped with grated daikon radish mixed with tangy yuzu ponzu sauce, served over the meat.

Not only gyudon (beef Rice bowl), but also the wide lineup of curry dishes is one of this restaurant's big draws.

You can choose from a wide range of toppings, including chicken, sausage, and spinach. It also comes with a special hot sauce on the side, so you can enjoy it with just the level of spice you like.

After drinks, I stopped by on a whim and ordered the always reliable negitama gyudon (beef Rice bowl with green onions and a soft egg). Since it is self-service, the food comes quickly, and it is nice to use the place at your own pace without any fuss. The crisp texture of the green onions and the mild richness of the soft egg mix well with the beef bowl, making it simple but very satisfying. It is easy to drop in even late at night, and the value for money is great!

When you are short on time, Sukiyaki-san, a gyudon (beef Rice bowl) chain shop, is just right. I had a medium gyudon and miso soup, and it was nice because it had good volume and was filling!

ポチグルメ♂

Among the gyudon (beef bowl) menu items, Negitama Gyudon is one of my personal top favorites. In the Tokumori size, it comes with plenty of meat and that reliably good taste♪ The crisp, spicy green onions and rich, runny egg yolk make the ultimate topping! I also love that you can enjoy all kinds of flavor changes with it. When I want a really hearty meal, this is the one without a doubt!
