[Kagoshima Prefecture, Kagoshima City] Restaurants with great oden

Bunke Mujaki

Bunke Mujaki is an izakaya in the Tenmonkan area. You can enjoy Kagoshima's local specialty, miso oden (oden simmered in miso).

It is in a convenient location right near Tenmonkandori Station on the Kagoshima City Tram, and the interior has a homey atmosphere.

The "miso oden (oden simmered in miso)" is slowly simmered. Despite how rich it looks, it is said to be light and easy to eat.

Among the items, the "konnyaku (yam cake)" is popular for its bouncy texture and the way it soaks up the dashi, making it very tasty.

The "satsuma-age (deep-fried fish cake)" is served as a set of three kinds, ranging from the classic type to one with beni shoga (pickled red ginger).

It has a juicy taste and is said to be perfect as a snack with shochu (distilled spirit).

I had the impression that miso would be quite rich, but Kagoshima no miso oden (Kagoshima-style miso simmered oden) is not that salty and is actually prepared in a way that makes it quite easy to eat.

When I traveled to Kagoshima, I visited after hearing that the oden (Japanese hot pot dish) here was really good. It was well seasoned, and there was a wide variety of oden, so I ordered all kinds of items.

Shumi no Mise Hakushika

Sakami no Mise Hakushika is a long-standing restaurant founded in 1953, just a 3-minute walk from Tenmonkan-dori Station on the Kagoshima City Tram.

Inside, there are counter seats, Sunken kotatsu seating, and Private room options, so you can relax and take your time.

The "miso oden (oden simmered in white miso broth)" has a deep, rich flavor. It is said to be a traditional menu item that the restaurant has served since it first opened.

Besides ordering A la carte, they also offer a "miso oden assortment" that comes with 3 vegetable items and 1 meat item.

The sashimi lineup features seasonal local wild caught fish brought in from the market every morning.

A recommended choice is the "kisetsu no osashimi moriawase (seasonal sashimi assortment)," which lets you fully enjoy fresh fish at its seasonal best. The tuna in particular is known for being cut thick, making it especially satisfying to eat.

The miso oden (miso-seasoned oden hotpot), served year-round regardless of the season, was thoroughly infused with flavor and very good. The yakitori (grilled chicken skewers), sashimi (raw fish), and salad were all tasty, and it was a restaurant with a high level of Manzoku.

Mozuku (Okinawan seaweed), sashimi assortment, yakitori liver, skin, Kara-age of takaebi (scarlet shrimp), and more. Everything was very fresh and delicious, and they also had Moriizo shochu at a reasonable price, so I had 1 go.

Satsuma Chiso Maita

"Satsuma Chiso Maita" is an izakaya where you can enjoy local dishes made with ingredients from Kagoshima Prefecture.

It is on the second floor of a building just steps from Tenmonkan-dori Station on the Kagoshima City Tram. Inside, the restaurant has a calm atmosphere, with counter seats and Sunken kotatsu seating.

The "oden (Japanese hot pot stew)" made with bonito broth from Makurazaki is well known for its tasty soy sauce based dashi, which brings out the flavor of the ingredients.

The recommended item is the "daikon radish," which is said to be irresistible as the aroma of the dashi gently spreads in your mouth when you take a bite.

"Roppaku Kurobuta no Shabu-shabu" made with Roppaku Kurobuta (Berkshire pork) from Kagoshima Prefecture is available both as part of a course and A la carte. A la carte orders can be placed from one serving.

The beautifully colored pork is said to have sweet fat and a melt-in-your-mouth taste.

The oden (Japanese stew) was nicely soaked with flavor and everything tasted great, but the yamaimo (Japanese mountain yam) was especially good as it mixed so well with the dashi (Japanese soup stock). Kyushu? Kagoshima? Maybe that is why I was happy to see yuzu kosho (yuzu chili pepper paste) served with it.

Robata to Oden Koronagirai Tenmonkan Ten

Robata to Oden Koronagirai Tenmonkan Ten is a hideaway-like restaurant in a building basement, about a 3-minute walk from Tenmonkandori Station on the Kagoshima City Tram.

The interior is spacious and relaxed with a casual feel. You can enjoy oden (Japanese hot pot dishes) with Japan's first All you can eat system.

The restaurant's specialty is the "otoshi oden (table charge appetizer oden) All you can eat." You can choose your favorite oden from the octagonal counter in the center of the restaurant made just for oden.

daikon radish is said to be so tender that chopsticks slide right through it, and it is full of flavor.

The “Koro potato salad” is a popular dish with big chunks of potato.

It comes with a soft-boiled egg with a runny yolk. When eaten together with the potato salad, it adds a creamy richness and tastes great.

This time, we mainly ordered the restaurant's signature dishes: oden (Japanese hot pot dishes) and robatayaki (fireside grill cooking). The oden, thoroughly soaked with dashi broth all the way through, pairs very well with alcohol.

・Whole grilled ika (squid)
A whole surumeika (Japanese flying squid) came out grilled in a bold presentation! I really love this! It tasted even better with mayonnaise, soy sauce, and shichimi (Japanese seven-spice) on top!

[Kirishima, Kagoshima Prefecture] Restaurants with great oden (Japanese stew)

Oden no Tenohira

Oden no Tenohira is a restaurant marked by its red lantern. It is well known for serving oden and dishes made with carefully selected vegetables.

Inside, there are counter seats and zashiki (tatami seating), creating a warm atmosphere. The restaurant is located a 5-minute drive from JR Kokubu Station.

The oden lineup includes several standard items such as tamago (egg) and ito konnyaku (shirataki-style konjac noodles).

A top recommendation is shungiku (garland chrysanthemum), which goes especially well with the lightly sweet dashi broth and its gentle bitterness. Depending on the season, they may use komatsuna (Japanese mustard spinach) instead of shungiku.

The Kara-age is a flashy signature menu item served on the bone. It is fried to a crisp and served piping hot.

It is said to be crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, letting you fully enjoy the flavor of the chicken. It goes perfectly with shochu (Japanese distilled spirit) or beer.

momomomotsu

The oden (Japanese fish cake stew) was also very good, with the broth soaked into every piece. As for the tonkotsu (pork bone broth), even though it was called spare ribs, the bones were so tender (maybe cartilage?) that I could eat all of it.

This time I ordered daikon radish, potatoes, satoimo (taro), shungiku (garland chrysanthemum), egg, and Kara-age. Everything was full of dashi flavor and really delicious! For me too, there is no doubt that Oden no Tenohira serves the number one oden of my life!
