Recommended kakigori (shaved ice) shops in Shinjuku City, Tokyo
Kakigori Ryan is a shop in Arakicho, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo, about a 3-minute walk from Yotsuya-sanchome Station. At night it operates as a bar, and only serves kakigori (shaved ice) during limited hours from daytime to early evening.
The interior has a calm atmosphere with a white and black color scheme. It is a popular spot, and in summer there are even days with a line.

This shop is said to be popular for serving original, generously sized kakigori (shaved ice). Even the regular size is fairly large.
You can find unique flavors here, such as a rich stretchy cheese-based sauce and a smooth pumpkin sauce.
Photograph:ツカレビュー
The L size is quite large, seeming to be more than 1.5 times the size of the regular. One of the nice things about the L size is that you can choose aikake (half-and-half) with two kinds of syrup.
With one kakigori (shaved ice), you can enjoy classics like strawberry and azuki (sweet red beans), as well as seasonal limited syrups. You can also enjoy the mixed flavor of the two kinds.
おまめさん105
The slightly sweet satsumaimo (sweet potato) cream is topped with a salty miso sauce. Hidden inside are hojicha (roasted green tea) and kuromame (black soybeans), making this a Japanese-style treat. The sweet and salty satsumaimo flavor takes center stage, but as you keep eating, you start to notice the flavors of kuromame and hojicha too. At the end, the sweetness of condensed milk joins in and takes the happiness level to the max‼️

It has a bar-like atmosphere and is located in a spot that is easy to miss if you are not looking closely. I tried the blueberry cheese tart. Even the regular size is quite filling! I think it is good value for a kakigori (shaved ice) shop. The cheese cream was rich, and inside were bits of flakes and cookies scattered throughout. It was delicious.

Italian Kakigori Ricotta is a shop where an Italian chef serves a new style of kakigori (shaved ice), blending Japanese kakigori with Italian dolci.
It is located in Kagurazaka, Shinjuku, an area known for its many stone paved streets and narrow alleys. The yellow and light blue door is the landmark. It is a compact and popular shop, so it is best to make a reservation in advance.

You can enjoy unique kakigori (shaved ice) made with classic Italian flavors like tiramisu, carbonara, balsamic vinegar, and cheese.
A popular choice is the "Tiramisu." Espresso and milk cream are poured over fluffy ice, and it is said to have mascarpone gelato inside.
Photograph:kouranos
One thing that makes it special is that gelato, fruit, olives, and other ingredients are hidden inside the shaved ice. As you keep eating, the flavor changes too.
You can also add toppings like cheese or caramel sauce for an extra charge. You can choose from the slightly smaller "Piccolo," the regular size, or the large "Grande."

This kakigori (shaved ice) has none of the hardness of ice, overly sweet syrup, or sharp brain freeze you might expect. The ice is light and fluffy, and the syrup brings out the flavors of fruits and vegetables the owner sources every morning. Some also include gelato and soaked fruit, a touch unique to the owner who trained in Italy.

When I first tried it, it felt so new and different that I got hooked in no time. At one point, I was going every week. I like pistachio milk, olive milk, and cheese. Today, I ordered caramel apple syrup for the first time. It was delicious! I already want to go again ^_^

Watashi no Kakigori is a shop in Kanda, Chiyoda City, just behind Comfort Hotel Tokyo Kanda. You can enjoy kakigori (shaved ice) made by a washoku (Japanese cuisine) chef.
Located on the first floor of a building, it has a compact interior with about 10 seats. The bright space has a natural and simple interior.

There are about seven kinds of original kakigori (shaved ice), each with its own character. Many are made by pouring the base syrup over shaved ice, adding another assortment of shaved ice on top, and finishing it with sauce or cream.
They also offer a mini size, and some people seem to go for two different flavors in the mini size.
Photograph:sakura_331
The espuma makes the milk cream fine textured and light, and inside you will find hidden pieces of fruit and ice cream.
They also offer plenty of limited time menu items, including ones topped with deep fried corn and ones topped with prosciutto.
あすあす223
A cute little kakigori (shaved ice) topped with corn. It comes with a chunky sauce that still has the kernels' texture, plus a salty cream cheese base with pepper ON. So, so, so good. At this size, I could totally have another one, so I added kabocha (pumpkin). This one was rich, sweet, and thick. The milk espuma was soft and airy.

I went with the limited corn one available from the evening! I thought the combination of fried corn and furikake slice cheese? was unusual. It also had corn cream and tomato inside, which made it light and easy to eat! The tomato flesh was sweet, so I think they use good quality tomatoes.

Jinbocho Shizen is a hideaway-like restaurant tucked away on a narrow street, about a 3-minute walk from Jinbocho Station. They do not take reservations. Instead, you write your name in the ledger in front of the restaurant, and you get notified by email when your turn to enter is getting close.
The restaurant has a retro wooden exterior, and the inside is said to have an antique feel with the warmth of wood throughout.

Shaved ice made mainly with seasonal ingredients. The sauces paired with it are varied, including milk, tea, cheese, and yogurt, so there is a wide selection of shaved ice on the menu.
Each one is beautifully presented, with an extra sauce served on the side to pour over later, so you can enjoy how the flavor changes.
Photograph:みちゅ0909
They also serve salad-like kakigori (shaved ice), pairing tomatoes and edamame (young soybeans) with basil, prosciutto, and gorgonzola cheese.
These unexpected combinations of ingredients and sauces are said to surprise you with how well balanced the flavors are once you try them.

You can tell the volume the moment it arrives. It is an impressively large serving that gets you excited at first sight. The ichigo (strawberries) are not just on top but packed inside as well, which is a nice touch because you can enjoy that strawberry flavor all the way to the last bite. The ichigo sauce that comes with it is also rich, with an excellent balance of sweetness and tartness.

I ordered the "Daifuku-goori (daifuku shaved ice) with umeboshi (pickled plum)" and "kuromame (black soybeans) sake kasu (sake lees)." They were unusual combinations you would not find elsewhere. The flavors were unlike anything I had ever tried, and they were incredibly good. Both had an excellent balance of syrup, toppings, and filling, and they stayed delicious right down to the last bite. I especially found the umeboshi Daifuku-goori so tasty that I wanted to have it again and again.

Waguri Mont Blanc & Kakigori Fuwari is a shop known for its signature mont blanc, made by pressing waguri (Japanese chestnut) paste through a special machine into fine strands. In addition to mont blanc, it also serves kakigori (shaved ice).
It is located on Amazake Yokocho in Ningyocho, an area of Tokyo that still keeps the charm of around 1880. The shop has a warm Japanese modern feel.
Photograph:ogm0614
For those who want to eat both Mont Blanc and kakigori (shaved ice), the answer is "Mont Blanc kakigori." It covers softly shaved ice with ultra-fine Mont Blanc cream.
It apparently has pie and custard cream inside. You can choose the cream in matcha or hojicha (roasted green tea) flavor.
Photograph:いちごだいふく15
They also offer kakigori (shaved ice) made with fruits like mango, strawberries, and peaches. Each one is generously topped with a rich fruit sauce, and they also add large pieces of real fruit.
It is also popular that every kakigori comes with hojicha (roasted green tea). It seems to gently warm your chilled mouth and body.

The shaved ice is light and fluffy, and the chestnut flavor is so rich it stands up easily to the ice, making it incredibly good. It also has pie and cream tucked inside, so it did not feel lacking at all. With the maple syrup served on the side, I could change up the flavor and finish it in no time.

[Tokyo, Bunkyo Ward] Recommended kakigori (shaved ice) shops

Kakigori En Yosuga is a shaved ice shop run by a traditional Japanese restaurant founded in 1930. Using Special ingredients, it serves kakigori (shaved ice) made with techniques unique to Japanese cuisine.
It is located in Bunkyo-ku, near the University of Tokyo. With tile floors, aged wood walls and tables, and a calm atmosphere, it offers a place where you can relax and enjoy your dessert.
Photograph:YuYu.
They say all the syrups and sweet sauces poured over the kakigori (shaved ice) are homemade, using anko (sweet red bean paste) made from high quality kuromame (black soybeans) also used by Japanese restaurants, as well as fruit shipped directly from farms.
The reason it is called "Kakigori Daifuku" is that they turn gyuhi (soft mochi dough) the ingredient used for the outer layer of daifuku (Japanese confection), into a syrup and pour it over the top.
Photograph:yokoMAMA
The shaved ice is layered many times over with gyuhi (soft rice cake) syrup and fruit syrup, then topped with anko (sweet red bean paste) and fruit, so the flavor and texture change as you keep eating.
It comes with a soup called "Kai no Shiro-wan." People say its warmth and saltiness pair well with the shaved ice.
甘いもの好き
The Eidaifuku Aka has fine, silky shaved ice that feels so smooth on the palate it ranks among the best kakigori (shaved ice) I’ve ever had. The gyuhi (soft mochi) flavor, the clear milk richness, and the sweetness and full-bodied depth of the strawberries are almost overwhelming, and the quality of the ingredients comes through clearly. The white strawberry on top has rich flavor with well-balanced acidity and sweetness, and it’s simply amazing.

紫陽花613
The complimentary kai no shiro-wan (white shellfish soup) (clam chowder) served alongside is impressive as well. It is rich and packed with ingredients without feeling heavy, and enjoying it between bites of kakigori (shaved ice) gives a pleasant contrast in temperature and flavor, with the level of finish of a course dish. They use clearly identified production regions and Special ingredients, and all the syrups and toppings are homemade. Rather than just kakigori, it feels like a single plated dish built with Japanese techniques.

Wagori, a specialty shop for kakigori (shaved ice) made with natural ice, is located along Shinobazu-dori in Sendagi, Bunkyo City. Surrounded by apartment buildings in a residential neighborhood, the shop opened in 2025年9月.
The interior has a Japanese modern feel with the warmth of wood. Its concept is “a hospitable bowl where tradition and the present blend together.”

They use natural ice made in Yatsugatake, Yamanashi Prefecture. It is a rare ice made by hand, and one of its features is that it melts slowly.
Even when shaved into kakigori (shaved ice), you can enjoy its light, airy texture, and it is said to be less likely to give you an ice cream headache.
Photograph:自称独り者グルメ
The syrups are also house-made, and they are said to be carefully prepared without heat so the aroma and flavor of the ingredients are not lost. You can enjoy seasonal fruit flavors with a rich fruitiness, as well as options with a salty note.
To finish, warm dashi (Japanese soup stock) is served, gently warming your chilled mouth with its umami.
魚介だし
The kinkan (kumquat) almond jelly was delicious, with the ripe sweetness of compoted kinkan! The almond jelly had a light aroma, and the orange inside added a fresh, juicy sweet-tart note that was different from the kinkan! Rich cheese cream joined in with the refreshing flavors, so I got to enjoy all kinds of tastes. They also served warm dashi (Japanese soup stock) after the meal, which was a nice touch!!

The On-the-Day limited item was pumpkin kakigori (shaved ice), and because they use rare natural water from the Southern Alps that gives the ice itself a smooth melt-in-your-mouth texture, it was far better than the shaved ice you get at food stalls. The bonus kombu kelp dashi was also very good. It was a great meal.

Recommended kakigori (shaved ice) shops in Tokyo and beyond
Himitsudo is located on the west side of Nippori Station, near the entrance to Yanaka Ginza, a somehow nostalgic shopping street that has been around since the 1950s.
The cozy interior feels like stepping into a picture book. If you sit at the counter, you can watch the ice being shaved and the final touches up close.
Photograph:ツカレビュー
They shave Nikko Tennen-gori (Nikko natural ice), made by freezing natural spring water from Nikko in Tochigi Prefecture using only the natural winter cold. Because it freezes slowly, the ice becomes dense and hard, so it does not melt easily even when shaved.
They shave the ice into the bowl with a traditional hand operated kakigori machine. There is a wide variety of kakigori on the menu.
Photograph:Dr.夫人
The fruit syrup is made from Domestic seasonal fruit, finished without adding water so it keeps plenty of real fruit texture. You can pair it with fresh cream or yogurt syrup.
You can also add an extra syrup to pour on later for an additional charge, so you can change up the flavor as you eat.
ゆる映え女子ごはん
The kakigori (shaved ice) is incredibly big and very filling! Since the inside of the shop is warm, it melts quickly, so you have to eat it fast. There are lots of flavors, and this time I ordered the seasonal limited sakura lemon pie. The lightly cherry blossom flavored ice is topped with refreshing lemon, and it tastes really good! Such a great combination!

This is a famous Tokyo kakigori (shaved ice) shop that has been featured in the media many times, and its biggest draw is without a doubt the volume. It is so large that it could easily make a full meal on its own, and it also has syrup poured inside, which makes it very satisfying. This time, I had the Marugoto Mikan (whole mandarin orange) for JPY2000. It also came with condensed milk for changing up the flavor, and I enjoyed it all the way to the last bite.

Wa kitchen Kanna is a cafe in Setagaya, Tokyo, near the lush Setagaya Park. Along with Japanese lunch dishes, one of its draws is that you can enjoy kakigori (shaved ice) all year round.

It’s also popular because you can take your time and enjoy the kakigori (shaved ice). It gets crowded during the hot season, so reservations are recommended.
The specialty is the "BC." This is a kakigori made with yogurt syrup, strawberries, and mascarpone cream. It’s rich, but still light and refreshing to eat.

I ordered the BC. It was topped with a sauce made with strawberries, Milkyish Yogurt, and mascarpone, and the mix of the fresh taste of the strawberries and yogurt with the rich cream was not as heavy as it looked. The first bite in particular was delicious and a lovely surprise.

The star is Silk Sweet. Moist and smooth like silk. Rich, but not heavy. The butter espuma is light and gently wraps the sweetness. As always, the ice is fluffy. The ice they use is Fujisan Tennengori Kiwami (Mt. Fuji natural ice, Kiwami). It is made by filtering underground water from Mt. Fuji and slowly freezing it in the natural cold.
Because it is frozen slowly, it becomes clear, beautiful ice, and when shaved it turns into kakigori (shaved ice) with a light, fluffy texture. They offer both regular menu items and daily specials.

Shaved ice made with strawberries is popular. They also offer a cake-style kakigori (shaved ice) topped with white milk syrup, fresh cream, and decorated with strawberries.

I chose the shio vanilla corn, a flavor you do not often see at kakigori (shaved ice) shops. It was seriously so good!! The shio vanilla and corn syrup went perfectly together for an amazing flavor!! Since it was my first time, I went with one of the standard menu items, the ichigo miruku (strawberry milk) shortcake style for JPY1550.
