Iroha Gekijo is an izakaya where you can enjoy tasty Wakayama cuisine and local sake, and it is located in one corner of the well-known Burakuri-cho Shotengai (Burakuri-cho shopping street) in Wakayama City.
This local favorite sits in a back alley and is said to have an irresistible nostalgic feel. The 1st floor has counter seating, while the 2nd and 3rd floors are fully equipped with seats that can accommodate large groups.

The seasonal sashimi menu, centered on fish from the waters off Wakayama, is popular. Many customers even come from outside the prefecture for the fish at this restaurant.
Along with 18 kinds of local sake from Wakayama, they also offer premium drinks from all over Japan, which you can enjoy with the food.
One of the big draws is that you can enjoy seasonal fish not just as sashimi, but also grilled, simmered, and prepared in many other ways.
Many reviews also praise the tempura. They use a wide range of seasonal ingredients, including seafood and vegetables, and the batter is said to be light with a perfect finish.
スチール
At this restaurant, the quality of the food is excellent, especially the saba (mackerel) and kochi (flathead) sashimi. They have a great selection of fresh fish, and the corn tempura was outstanding too. The atmosphere was also nice, and I was able to enjoy my meal in a relaxed setting. It is definitely a place I would love to visit again!

Tadaya is an izakaya run by a liquor store with a 90-year history, conveniently located a 1-minute walk from JR Wakayama Station.
Its old-school retro atmosphere is part of the charm, and it seems to be a popular place for locals to relax. Private rooms for groups of 2 or more are also available.

The menu is so extensive, with ozukuri (sashimi), fried dishes, and other a la carte items, that it is hard to choose.
The oden (Japanese stew) is said to be popular with regulars, and people say the ingredients are thick-cut yet still nicely soaked with dashi broth and very tasty. There is also a wide variety to choose from.

True to its roots as a liquor shop, it offers a wide range of drinks to enjoy, including local sake from across Japan and around the world, wine, and cocktails.
There are many dishes that pair well with alcohol, and the white miso based doteyaki-kushi (skewered beef tendon stew) is also recommended. It is known for its gentle flavor and is said to be well worth trying.

The restaurant is located close to JR Wakayama Station. The interior and exterior have the atmosphere of the Showa era and a traditional downtown feel, giving the place plenty of charm. The staff are also very polite and kind, which makes you feel at ease. They also run a liquor shop, and I enjoyed a variety of Wakayama local sake with tasty side dishes to go with it.

The walls inside are packed with menu strips from top to bottom, you can watch tempura and other fried dishes being cooked live from the U-shaped counter, and the regulars have a nice vibe too. Even before ordering, it already felt like a winner. With aji fry (fried horse mackerel) and oden (Japanese stew) as snacks, the beer goes down easy. If I come to Wakayama again, I’ll definitely be back!

Sohonke Mehariya Wakayama Ten is an izakaya with more than 60 years of history, located a 3-minute walk from Wakayama Station, and is popular for dishes made with ingredients from Wakayama and mehari-zushi (local rice ball specialty), a regional dish.
At lunch, many people order set meals, while at night many stop by for drinks and small plates. There is a good range of seating options, with counter seats, table seats, and Private room seating.

The menu ranges from a wide variety of Wakayama (Wakayama Prefecture) specialties served à la carte to courses that let you fully enjoy local flavors.
The kushikatsu (deep-fried skewers) are just right as a casual snack with drinks, and every skewer is Homemade in-house. They fry them in rice oil, so they are said to taste light and healthy without feeling greasy afterward.
The restaurant’s signature item, mehari-zushi (a local rice ball from Kishu), is a unique kind of onigiri. It is made by wrapping rice in pickled takana mustard greens, and they also offer versions with tenmusu (rice ball with tempura shrimp) inside and spicy types.
They do not make them in advance, and instead carefully prepare each one after an order comes in. It is also recommended as a finishing dish after drinks.

We ordered maguro (tuna) and mehari-zushi (pickled mustard leaf sushi), among other things, but the Kishu Umedori (Kishu plum-fed chicken) was outstanding. Garlic powder was available, but it was more than tasty enough on its own and is a recommended dish. We were able to enjoy it with a Japanese sake tasting flight, and it was Manzoku.

I visited with three friends. First, the maguro (tuna sashimi) was fresh and delicious. The Kara-age was large, juicy, and really tasty. The mehari-zushi (pickled leaf-wrapped sushi) was also better than I expected, so I was glad I came.

Being in Wakayama Prefecture, the seafood really is on another level. We had super fresh and really delicious kaisen (seafood)♡♡♡What impressed me most was the octopus tempura✨It had a nice crunchy texture and was incredibly tasty. Also, the kujira no tatsuta-age (Wakayama-style deep-fried whale) that is a Wakayama specialty had a flavor you want to keep coming back to♡♡The otsukuri (sashimi platter) was all fresh too, and everything was really good.

It is close to the station, the interior is calm, and it also has Private rooms, so it is extremely easy to use for different occasions. The staff also provided calm and pleasant service. The food was all seasoned to go well with alcohol, and the balance between price and portion size was good, so I think it is well worth it. The kurumi (walnuts) and ume (plum) snack also pairs well with local sake, so you can enjoy slowly sipping your drink.

As soon as I looked at the menu, I noticed dishes and drinks made with unusual ingredients, so I asked the staff about them. They kindly and carefully explained everything, and I was able to enjoy both the food and the sake. In particular, the dishes made with homemade tofu and Negoro-daito (a local chili pepper) paired perfectly with the local sake, and the tasty, fresh fish with its nice firm texture was also great. I had a wonderful time.

You can enjoy them either as a lunch set meal or from the evening A la carte menu. People also say they are great for nibbling little by little with drinks.

The interior, renovated from what used to be an unagi (eel) restaurant, was bright and filled with the scent of wood. Every dish made it clear at a glance that it was carefully prepared to bring out the best of the ingredients. The nostalgic kujira no tatsuta-age (deep-fried whale) is something you should definitely try. The coating was crisp, and it was tender and delicious. The awabi (abalone) butter-yaki (butter-grilled abalone) also had great texture and the butter flavor was excellent.

The menu featuring fresh seafood from Wakayama Prefecture is popular, and above all, they say the "wara-yaki (straw-seared) bonito no shio tataki (lightly seared bonito with salt)" is a must try.

The atmosphere of the restaurant was very nice, and the service from the staff was good too. The katsuo no tataki (seared bonito) was outstanding. You should definitely order it. The hamo (pike conger) tempura was also crisp on the outside and tender inside, and it was delicious.

Tori Sho Yoshimatsu, about a 10-minute walk from Wakayama Station, is an izakaya (Japanese pub) where you can enjoy charcoal-grilled skewers made with brand-name chicken and creative dishes.
The interior is a calm Japanese-style space where you can relax and enjoy your meal. There are counter and table seats available, and it is said to work well for a variety of occasions.

The yakitori menu made with Kishu Umedori (chicken raised on feed containing Japanese plum) is popular. It is grilled over Kishu Binchotan (high-grade white charcoal from Kishu).
It is known for its moist texture and refined sweetness, and it pairs perfectly with Japanese sake brought in from around the country.

They also offer a full lineup of playful a la carte dishes, and reviews praise the vividly green Midoridama, which really catches the eye.
It is made by wrapping a soft-boiled egg in potato salad and coating the outside with aosa nori (green laver). It is perfect as a casual snack to enjoy with a drink.

When you order the Omakase seven-skewer set, you’ll be surprised by how big the pieces of meat are and how tender every skewer is! Midoridama is an especially recommended item that you should definitely try. With attentive service and high quality yakitori (grilled chicken skewers), I had a highly satisfying time.

Recommended izakaya in Wakayama Prefecture (outside Wakayama City)

Umi Tsubame is an izakaya inside Nanki Katsuura Hotel Urashima in Higashimuro-gun Nachikatsuura-cho, where you can enjoy 100 dishes and 100 kinds of Wakayama local sake.
The interior is said to have the spacious, relaxing feel you would expect from a hotel. There is a wide range of seating options, including counter seats, table seats, and a koagari (raised tatami seating area) zashiki.

One of the big draws is that you can enjoy local seafood unique to this area, the kind that is hard to find in the city.
The recommended toppings change daily depending on the season and the day’s catch. They offer unusual items like iruka (dolphin) and manbo (ocean sunfish), and reviews say everything is fresh and tasty.

A wide selection of local sake personally chosen by the owner’s own palate is a nice touch, and they also have a Japanese sake advisor on site.
They also offer a full lineup of easy to drink fruit liqueurs that are unique to Wakayama (a prefecture known as the fruit kingdom). You can also compare different Japanese sake and umeshu (plum wine). It’s perfect when you’re not sure what to order.
きな粉野郎
You can enjoy kyodo ryori (regional cuisine) and local seafood you only find here, and the lineup is especially nice with a wide range of sake tasting options. They also have a full menu of unusual items you do not often see elsewhere, such as utsubo (moray eel) and kujira (whale), so the meal feels satisfying, and both the freshness of the sashimi and the overall quality of the dishes are very high. Even the otoshi (small appetizer) is quite lavish, so this is a place I recommend for anyone who wants to enjoy local sake, kyodo ryori, and seafood.

The staff were not only polite and attentive, but also very knowledgeable about Japanese sake, so it was fun just listening to their explanations. The food was also delicious, and it made the Japanese sake go down very easily. I never imagined there would be such a great izakaya (Japanese-style pub) inside a hotel.

Kaisen Resutoran Kanpachiya in Shinjocho, Tanabe City, Wakayama Prefecture, is a Japanese izakaya that is known for serving fresh, hearty seafood dishes.
The bright and open interior offers a wide range of seating options, including Private room seating where you can relax and Sunken kotatsu seating that works well for larger groups.

The menu features carefully selected dishes centered on locally caught seafood. The photo shows the most popular item on the sashimi menu, “kanpachi assortment (amberjack assortment).”
This dish is an On-the-Day selection with the chef’s recommended catches, and is said to be full of the natural goodness of each ingredient, from plump shrimp to translucent shirasu (whitebait).
The hamayaki (grilled seafood) menu, featuring seafood shipped direct from the production region and grilled over a wire mesh, is also popular. Among the many options, the "Oban Hotate (large scallop)" is the most popular.
It is best enjoyed slowly grilling it right at your table together with Special local sake from Wakayama.

The three of us in the family ordered seafood dishes, tempura, and izakaya menu items. As expected, the seafood dishes were really delicious! And each dish came in a large portion, so we got full quickly. The food arrived quickly, the staff were polite, and we made great memories in Wakayama. It was delicious!☺️

They ordered salad, a seafood Rice bowl, and more. Of course, the sashimi was fresh and very tasty. They also enjoyed a tasting comparison of different varieties of a Japanese sake brand they had wanted to try. Great fish and good Japanese sake really are a perfect match.
