[Naha, Okinawa] Recommended Sushi Restaurants

Sushi Yasaka

Sushi Yae is a sushi restaurant in the central area of Okinawa Main Island, near places like the Okinawa Prefectural Government Office and Naha City Hall. Multiple reviews say it has a hideaway-like atmosphere.

The restaurant has counter seating where you can enjoy the live feel right in front of the chefs, as well as calm Semi-private rooms, making it a space where you can relax and take your time.

They carefully choose the ingredients available that day and prepare seafood at its best. You can enjoy both seasonal toppings from all over Japan and local Okinawan ingredients.

The popular omakase course lets you enjoy recommended dishes such as ippin ryori (à la carte dishes), nigiri-zushi (hand-formed sushi), and soups.

They are also particular about their dashi broth, and the "siphon-style fish dashi broth" is a menu item where you can watch the broth being made right in front of you. You can enjoy the aroma and umami of the broth in a simple way.

Though it has an elegant atmosphere, this restaurant is known as a place where you can relax and enjoy sushi.

Sushi Yasaka is near Asahibashi Station in Naha City. I reserved the Special fish Omakase course for JPY12,000. They offer local fish and local sake as well. You can enjoy a relaxed time in a calm space. It is a restaurant with counter seating only, but there is plenty of space between the seats, which is nice.

The sushi, made with rare local neta (toppings) and seasonal ingredients you only find in the area, was carefully shaped piece by piece, and every bite was delicious. I especially enjoyed the creative sushi that made the most of local ingredients, which let me fully savor flavors unique to Naha (city in Okinawa). Even though both the food and service were top class, another big draw was the cozy atmosphere that let me relax and enjoy the meal.

Ryukyu Sushi Tsukiji Aozora Sandaime Naha Honten

Ryukyu Sushi Tsukiji Aozora Sandaime Naha Honten is a sushi restaurant in Matsuyama, Naha, about a 10-minute walk from Kencho-mae Station. You can enjoy sushi made with Edomae-zushi (Tokyo-style sushi) techniques.

The restaurant has counter seating and four Private rooms with Sunken kotatsu seating and bright, ornate decor. It feels upscale, yet you can still dine in a casual way.

The owner trained at Tsukiji Aozora Sandaime, a popular sushi restaurant in Tokyo with over 100 years of history. Fresh ingredients are also delivered from Tokyo's large Tsukiji Market.

You can enjoy Edomae-zushi (Tokyo-style sushi) made in a traditional style, with rice blended from four kinds of vinegar and toppings prepared with great care.

You can also enjoy dishes and sushi made with tropical fish landed in Okinawa. They say you can also find flavors unique to Okinawa, ones you will not come across in Tokyo.

Pairings like tuna with Okinawa’s specialty seaweed umi-budo (sea grapes) are popular, and so is gurukun (banana fish), an Okinawan fish, prepared kobujime-style by sandwiching it with kombu kelp to add more umami.

Overall, the level of cooking and aging was the best of any sushi I’ve had so far. The fish from Okinawa were hard to compare since the waters are warmer there and some of the fish are not ones you usually see on the market, so they were not from production regions I knew well or fish I had eaten before, but I’d definitely like to stop by when I go to Okinawa, and next time I want to bring my family too.

The chef carefully explained each dish one by one, which made the meal all the more interesting. They also served fish that are considered high-end even in Okinawa, so you can really enjoy the appeal of local ingredients. The most delicious and memorable item was the chutoro (medium fatty tuna) from Ishigaki-jima (Ishigaki Island). It had a very smooth texture on the tongue.

Sushi Yaginuma

Sushi Yaginuma, about a 7-minute walk from Makishi Station, is a well-reviewed place where you can enjoy authentic Edomae-zushi (Tokyo-style sushi) and carefully prepared dishes made with Okinawan ingredients along with drinks.

The interior has an elegant and clean feel, with plenty of white wood throughout. At the counter seats, you can watch the owner’s careful work, and chatting with the owner is part of the fun.

For the rice used exclusively for sushi, they cook carefully selected branded rice in a hagama (traditional pot) and mix it with a blend of vinegars to create shari (sushi rice) in the Edomae-zushi (Tokyo-style sushi) style.

For the toppings, they mainly use seafood from Okinawa Prefecture along with seasonal fish and shellfish. The beautifully made nigiri is also well liked for its delicate texture that seems to melt apart in your mouth.

Another plus is the lineup of craft beer, Japanese sake that pairs well with sushi, and wine. They also seem to offer awamori (Okinawan distilled spirit), a local Okinawan drink.

Multiple reviews say that the chef's Omakase course offers a meal with great taste and volume, leaving diners highly satisfied.

一ノ瀬正紘

The interior centers on a clean, single slab counter made of pale wood, with subdued lighting that creates a calm, grown-up atmosphere. Seating is limited, so you can take your time and enjoy Chef Yaginuma's careful work right in front of you. It is a high-quality, relaxing space that is ideal for meals with friends or someone special, as well as business dinners.

To get straight to the point, I was very Manzoku! It was my first time having a sushi course in Okinawa, and I was seriously happy with it. There were ingredients I had never tried before, and since the climate is different, the seasonal timing is naturally a little different from Fukuoka, so I could really feel the local character. There were lots of dishes, and everything was delicious!

Sushi Tsumugi

Sushi Tsumugi is a restaurant on Oei-dori, a little away from Kokusai-dori. You can stop by for an easy lunch or enjoy a calm, relaxed dinner.

The interior uses simple colors designed to keep the focus on the food, and the soft lighting seems to make it easy to relax and enjoy your meal.

The sushi created by the owner, who also honed his skills at an Italian restaurant, is based on traditional techniques while bringing in a fresh sense.

The restaurant values each encounter with food, and is well regarded for letting guests enjoy flavors that make the most of ingredients unique to that season.

The menu is mainly Omakase courses, with dishes such as creative Japanese cuisine. They say you can see the chef’s careful work from the dishes served as Appetizers.

The drink list is also well stocked, with wine, Japanese sake, shochu, and sparkling wine. It is also perfect when you want to take your time and enjoy sushi and drinks with someone special.

I chose the middle course and looked forward to it, and every dish that came out was so good that I was completely Manzoku! You can also tell from the nigiri that the shari (sushi rice) is just right, and that the toppings have great flavor and freshness.

Every dish from the sakizuke (appetizer served at the start) up to the sushi was really good. Before you even get to the sushi, if you're drinking, these dishes alone might have you finishing quite a few drinks. The ones I especially liked were amaebi (sweet shrimp) cured with kombu kelp, chutoro (medium fatty tuna), and torotaku (fatty tuna and pickled daikon roll). The shari (sushi rice) was on the small side, so it was sushi that really let you taste the topping.

Yume Sushi

Yume Sushi is a sushi restaurant about a 3-minute walk from the east exit of Kencho-mae Station. Located on a street lined with restaurants, it has a calm feel, with white exterior walls and a noren (traditional shop curtain) hanging at the entrance.

In addition to the large main counter, it also has a Private room with its own dedicated counter for a more private setting.

One highlight here is that you can eat tuna flown in directly from Yamakou, a famous wholesaler in Toyosu Market, Tokyo, that supplies high-quality wild honmaguro (Pacific bluefin tuna) mainly to high-end restaurants.

It gets good reviews for its outstanding freshness, with richly flavorful tuna and seasonal seafood that you can only enjoy at that time of year.

Only available at lunchtime, they offer set menus with nigiri sushi, grilled fish, and soup. You can casually enjoy sushi made with high quality neta (toppings).

You can order either a course with à la carte dishes and nigiri sushi or from the à la carte menu, so you can tailor your meal to the amount you want to eat.

TDAWG

Rather than a traditional sushi restaurant, it has more of the feel of a casual sushi izakaya (Japanese-style pub). That said, it does not feel too casual either, balancing just the right amount of formality with a comfortable atmosphere. The taisho (head sushi chef) is friendly and easy to talk to, creating a vibe where even first-time visitors can quickly feel at ease. It is a sushi spot that serves genuinely good food without making guests feel they need to be on edge, with just the right sense of distance.

たらし

They season it just right with soy sauce, salt, shikuwasa (Okinawan citrus), and more, which gives the sense that they bring out the full umami of the toppings and the natural flavors of the ingredients. You can feel the chef’s spirit in each piece of sushi. d(^_^o)It’s hard not to be captivated by the skillful preparation. What a joy to be able to enjoy Edomae sushi in Okinawa, made with fresh fish shipped directly from Toyosu ♡

Chokotto Zushi Sakurazaka Ten

Chokotto Sushi Sakurazaka Ten is located near Hyatt Regency Naha and also close to Kokusai-dori (Kokusai Street). It is a sister restaurant of a sushi shop whose Honten is in Hokkaido.

The casual space has about 10 counter seats. It is said to be easy to visit whether you are on your own or with a group.

You can enjoy both seafood caught in the northern seas of Japan and seafood caught in the southern seas of Japan. Another feature is the wide variety of toppings.

The "shima-zushi (island-style sushi)" uses fish from Okinawa and beef as toppings, while menu items labeled "namara" use ingredients from Hokkaido. You can order both à la carte.

The limited quantity Ezokko Rice bowl, which comes with rice in a bowl topped with plenty of ikura (salmon roe), and Hokkaido specialties such as chicken Kara-age called zangi are also popular.

This restaurant is also perfect when you want to stop by for a light bite as your second spot after dinner.

We were craving shima-zushi (island-style sushi), so first we had two servings of the Ryukyu Combo with 5 pieces each. We also ordered Daito-zushi, seared beef, and the Namara Tekka Roll, and everything was delicious. The sushi rice was also small and made for cute nigiri.

ビリー・ブッチャー

If you want to eat Okinawa and Ryukyu fish as sushi, go for the Ryukyu 5-kan (five-piece sushi set) and a few other things. You can eat Okinawan fish here. What kind of fish? They will tell you while you ask. You can also eat fish from Hokkaido. You can drop in casually without feeling stiff or formal. The owner is also friendly and nice. Even the gari (pickled ginger) is tasty, maybe an original version made with young ginger pickled in kokuto (brown sugar)?

Sushi Kanchi

This sushi restaurant is located in central Naha, near Matsuyama Koen (Matsuyama Park). It is open only at dinnertime.

Inside, there is only white wood counter seating. Although it is an authentic sushi restaurant, it is said to have a homey atmosphere where you can also enjoy chatting with the owner while you dine.

The owner is from Okinawa and honed his skills at restaurants in Tokyo and Fukuoka. You can enjoy tuna landed in Nagasaki Prefecture and fresh seafood sourced from around Japan.

You can try a wide variety of toppings, including carefully prepared neta (sushi toppings) and nigiri sushi with only the skin side lightly seared for a fragrant finish.

The course also includes à la carte dishes such as grilled items and tempura, and there were several reviews saying the tempura was delicious.

Because it has counter seating, the dishes are served at a pace that matches how quickly you eat, and it seems easy to chat about the ingredients and Okinawa, making for a fun mealtime.

fc5db8

The area around the restaurant was quiet, and I enjoyed the casual atmosphere. I used the counter seat. The interior was clean and tidy, and despite that, the prices were easy to enjoy without stretching your budget, and I had both Japanese sake and beer. I recommend the Omakase course meal. The extra tempura was also a great value.

Of course the sushi was excellent, and the grilled dishes and tempura snacks they recommended were also very good. I had the recommended awamori (Okinawan distilled spirit), and it paired incredibly well. Thank you very much. The chef was friendly and easy to talk to, so I could relax and enjoy the meal. I highly recommend it for solo diners too.

[Miyakojima City, Okinawa Prefecture] Recommended Sushi Restaurants

Sushi Genya Miyako Rikyu

Sushi Genya Miyako Rikyu is a sushi restaurant by reservation only, located about 10 minutes by car from Miyako Airport.

Set in an Okinawa-style stone house, it has counter seats where you can enjoy the live atmosphere, as well as Private room seating where guests with children can dine with peace of mind.

The restaurant reportedly flies in seafood from an Osaka fishmonger with more than 100 years of history, after it has been prepared and aged using the method they specify. People say the toppings have stronger umami and a better aroma.

They are also particular about the tableware used to serve the food, and each dish is beautifully presented on one of a kind pieces made by ceramic artists.

You can also enjoy dishes made with local ingredients such as vegetables from Miyakojima (Miyako Island) and Miyako-gyu (Miyako beef). The menu seems well balanced, with sushi, tempura, chawanmushi (savory egg custard), and more.

There is also a menu for children, so families can enjoy sushi here with peace of mind.

We had authentic sushi in Miyakojima and it was absolutely delicious! Even in this resort area, the prices were reasonable, and the taisho (head chef) was very kind and friendly, so we had a really fun time! We especially loved the amadai (tilefish) matsukasa and the uni (sea urchin) ikura (salmon roe), and ordered them again! They also had a wide selection of drinks, and the two of us enjoyed more than 10 glasses^ ^

This is a rare place in Miyakojima (Miyako Island) where you can enjoy authentic sushi. Every piece of nigiri made with fresh local seafood showed careful craftsmanship, with a great balance of taste, aroma, and texture. The chef also has a warm personality, and you can spend a relaxed time enjoying conversation. It was a wonderful restaurant that is clearly loved not only as a dining spot for tourists but by locals as well.
