This is a restaurant where you can casually enjoy Yamaguchi specialties like fugu (blowfish) dishes and kawara-soba (tile-grilled soba)! Located in the center of the hot spring town, it also has a wide selection of Japanese sake. They also serve drinks during the day, so it might be nice to stop by for a break while enjoying the footbaths scattered around town. This is definitely a place you'll want to come back to again!

・Kawara soba (buckwheat noodles served on a hot roof tile)
The sweet soba dipping sauce and the soba seared on a kawara were a first for me, and... the momiji oroshi and lemon brought it all together so nicely... "Seriously, it was soooo good♡♡♡" They also have lots of local specialties like fugu (blowfish), Kara-age, and rice bowls, so if you get the chance, definitely give it a try〜!!

まんぷくたかし

Hamabee in Shin-Yamaguchi Kitaguchi is a restaurant known for its table-side sour drinks and Yakiniku. When I visited the other day, I was completely won over by its charm. First, the table-side sour drinks are All you can drink, with a fruity taste that paired perfectly with the food. The Yakiniku was all delicious too!! I especially recommend the thick-cut Wagyu, which had a juicy texture and rich flavor.

The menu also seemed to have quite a lot of choices. We ordered drinks and fried dishes, and since we were a little hungry, we also got TKG (tamago kake gohan, rice with raw egg), so we started off modestly. But every dish that came out was very filling! The salad was enough for 4 people to share, and even the TKG was served in a big bowl. We did our best to finish everything and cleaned our plates!

Ishin no Shokudokoro Tsubaki

Ishin no Shokudokoro Tsubaki is an izakaya within walking distance of Yudaonsen Station on the JR Yamaguchi Line, located in the center of Yuda Onsen (hot spring) district in Yamaguchi City.

Inside, the restaurant offers counter seats, table seats, and fully private rooms, with a warm and calm atmosphere. It is said to be the kind of place where you can easily stop by on your own and spend the gentle, relaxing time you would expect in a hot spring town.

The menu features seafood from Hagi and Nagato in Yamaguchi Prefecture and meat from the prefecture, bringing out the best in each ingredient.

The standard dishes that make the most of these quality ingredients are also part of the appeal, and every one offers a satisfying taste. Their original creative dishes are also very popular, giving you lots of ways to enjoy the menu.

The popular "Choshu-dori (Choshu chicken) tsubaki-yaki" is said to have a nicely browned, fragrant skin, with a crisp texture from the first bite.

The more you chew, the juicier it gets, and this dish really lets you taste the rich natural flavor of the chicken. The restaurant’s style is to enjoy its spicy flavor with a touch of yuzu kosho (yuzu pepper paste) for a little kick.

I visited alone on a business trip night. The spacious counter seat let me relax without feeling awkward. I started with a drink of shochu while admiring the beauty of the otoshi (small appetizer). After filling up on a nicely sized kaisendon (seafood Rice bowl), I was impressed by how good the ankimo ponzu was, which I ordered as a snack for Japanese sake. I had no idea Yamaguchi Prefecture ranked No. 1 in anglerfish landings in Japan. They also had a full lineup of local Japanese sake from Yamaguchi Prefecture, and I really enjoyed it.

The otoshi (small appetizer) included a small bowl of salad, a small bowl of nimono (simmered dish), and an assortment of other small bites. The special agedashi dofu (fried tofu in broth) had soft, silky tofu, and the dashi seasoning was just right and very tasty. The Wagyu Yakiniku Teppan-yaki had meat grilled on an iron plate, and it was juicy.

Welcome Gozen set. It was my first time trying kawara soba (tile-grilled buckwheat noodles), and I was Surprising at how good it was. The crispy roasted green tea soba, sweet and savory beef, refreshing lemon, and noodle dipping sauce came together for a great flavor. In the Japanese sake tasting flight, Gangi was especially good. We also added sashimi and fugu (pufferfish) and enjoyed them.

I ordered whale tataki and bamboo shoot sashimi. I enjoyed a beer while savoring the distinctive flavor of the whale. It feels like a chain restaurant, but I was Surprising to find bamboo shoot sashimi on the menu. After that, I also enjoyed overnight dried fugu (pufferfish) and local sake from Yamaguchi Prefecture. This restaurant was better than expected.

Mekiki no Ginji Shin-Yamaguchi Shinkansen-guchi Ekimae Ten

Mekiki no Ginji Shinyamaguchi Shinkansenguchi Ekimae Ten is a nationwide chain izakaya, and this branch is in a convenient location in central Yamaguchi City.

The table seating has a playful touch, with empty bottle crates used as chairs, and the bright lanterns create a lively atmosphere. The restaurant also has Private rooms and a kids' room, so you can relax and enjoy your time without worry.

The piping hot hamayaki (grilled seafood) you can enjoy right at your table is popular. With a style where fresh seafood is grilled right in front of you, one of the big draws is how directly it brings out the natural flavor of the ingredients.

The Fresh Scent of the Ocean rises with a toasty aroma, and combined with the fun of grilling it yourself, some reviews said it naturally made for a lively, conversation filled time.

The drink lineup includes draft beer, Japanese sake, shochu, and even soft drinks, so anyone can enjoy it.

The photo shows the bold looking "Frozen Lemon Sour." The frozen lemons lined around the glass make a nice accent and give it a very refreshing taste.

マリー6513

I was glad they were open on the night of New Year's Day. I thought it would be a very ordinary izakaya (Japanese pub), but it was fun to grill the otoshi (small appetizer) and shishamo (smelt) myself right in front of me. The grilled harasu (salmon belly), soft roe ponzu, hokke (Atka mackerel), and sashimi were especially good. It became a great memory from the trip.

The staff were all very attentive. It was a fairly popular place, and there were a fair number of customers too. It was a little fun that we could grill the dishes ourselves. The lemon sour looked great. We added an extra sour too. We’ll probably come here again next time.

[Ube, Yamaguchi Prefecture] Recommended Izakaya

Kotetsu

Kotetsu is an izakaya (Japanese pub) in Ube, about a 7-minute walk from Ube-Shinkawa Station on the JR Ube Line.

Seats are arranged around the fully open kitchen, so you can really enjoy the lively feeling of watching the dishes come together right in front of you. They also offer Private rooms where you can relax without worrying about the people around you, which makes it easy to choose the right setting for the occasion.

You can enjoy a wide range of Yamaguchi flavors here, from authentic charcoal-grilled yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) and Choshu mizutaki (Yamaguchi-style chicken hotpot) to Japanese pufferfish.

The live squid caught off Hagi and shipped straight from the Sea of Japan is a highlight, and you can choose your favorite from the squid swimming in the in-house tank. The "ika no sashimi (squid sashimi)" is said to have a crisp bite and a clear natural sweetness.

Their authentic sumibiyaki yakitori (charcoal-grilled chicken skewers) is also popular, using 4 kinds of chicken for different cuts and bringing out the flavor with the fragrant aroma of binchotan (high-grade charcoal).

The "Kodawari Kushi 4-Piece Assortment" and the freshly fried "Classic 4-Type Kushiage Assortment," which also pairs well with local sake, are popular too, with a light texture that goes well with the house special sauce.

食いしん坊 まっくん

The highlight of this restaurant is ikazukuri (live-prepared squid sashimi), where squid swimming in the fish tank is cleaned and prepared on the spot. Its amazing transparency and crisp, springy texture were fantastic. I was especially lucky to get a counter seat. Being able to enjoy drinks while watching the manager prepare the squid right in front of us made it feel like a live show, turning the experience into a luxurious kind of entertainment you can enjoy with your eyes too.

This time I headed to still-uncharted Ube, and I found an izakaya that I personally think might be the best in Yamaguchi Prefecture right now!! Kotetsu in Ube-Shinkawa. They have iki-ika (live squid), fugu (pufferfish), Choshu jidori (Choshu local chicken), seafood from Yamaguchi Prefecture, and Japanese sake from within the prefecture, so it is all about Yamaguchi and incredibly delicious! Both the seafood and chicken are very fresh, and they really know the kind of flavors drinkers love lol.

Oniku Baru Uni Ube-shinkawa Ekimae Ten

Oniku Bar Uni Ube Shinkawa Ekimae Ten is a casual izakaya (Japanese pub) in a location just steps from Ube-Shinkawa Station on the JR Onoda Line. Inside, sake barrel tables are lined up, adding to the relaxed atmosphere where you can spend time without feeling formal.

It is also open during the day, which is still unusual in Ube City, making it perfect for dropping by and enjoying a casual daytime drink.

They offer a lineup of luxury ingredients, including premium meat, Aged meat, uni (sea urchin), and ikura (salmon roe).

The Most Popular item is "gyu ni uni soe (beef topped with sea urchin)." The Strip loin, aged for 30 days, is said to have fat that melts the moment it hits your mouth. It also has a great match with the rich, large uni.

The "Otsubu Noko Uni no Cream Pasta" made with plenty of otsubu noko uni (large rich sea urchin) is so lavish that it almost completely hides the pasta.

The sweet sea urchin coats the pasta in an amount that seems to exceed the pasta itself, making this an irresistible dish for sea urchin lovers.

89200770105グルメ

The rich sea urchin pasta is outstanding. The carpaccio is also great, with fresh scallops and salmon roe that pops nicely. The Aged meat is also very tender and tasty. The quattro formaggi uses cheeses with a distinctive flavor, but it tastes really good with honey drizzled on top. We enjoyed all of these dishes with beer and wine.

しばうらしま

A restaurant in Ube, a city known for seafood, that serves uni (sea urchin) and meat. It feels like they use only a small amount of meat from Yamaguchi lol, but that somehow adds to the charm. Mixing the uni with the meat and eating them together is simply unbeatable! The Outside skirt and tongue were both just right, and I enjoyed them with red wine! The wine bottles are also reasonably priced, which is much appreciated!

Kaisen Tonya (Seafood Wholesaler)

Kaisen Donya is a seafood izakaya (Japanese-style pub) that stands out for its convenient location, right by the Kokusai Hotel in Ube City and just a short walk from JR Ube-Shinkawa Station.

The interior has a calm atmosphere, with table and counter seating. Partitions can divide the space, so it can be arranged to suit different group sizes.

The pufferfish dishes are highly regarded even among locals, and the menu is full of options such as torafuku chiri (hotpot with tiger pufferfish) and fuku foil-yaki (foil-baked pufferfish).

The "pufferfish Kara-age" is appealing for its light, airy coating and rich flavor that is hard to believe comes from white fish. It has a delicate texture that keeps you reaching for another bite.

They also have a great lineup of Japanese sake. The nationally known Dassai offers everything from junmai ginjo to sparkling.

You can also enjoy richly flavored drinks unique to this restaurant, such as fuku-hire-zake (blowfish fin sake) and fuku-hone-zake (blowfish bone sake).

きゅっきぃ

The interior has a chic and stylish feel. Right by the entrance, there are 5 counter seats, and table seating in the back. Since there were 3 of us, we took a table. There is no Private room, but they have added touches like noren (traditional fabric dividers) to give some privacy, and I was able to relax at a leisurely pace. At the counter, you can sit face to face with the taisho (chef-owner), so it seems like a good place to chat about all sorts of things. It also looks like a place solo diners can fully enjoy.

Izakaya Gekijo Rappa

"Izakaya Gekijo Rappa" is an izakaya (Japanese pub) located in central Ube City, about a 3-minute walk from JR Ube-Shinkawa Station. At the counter seats, they put on a straw-fire grilling performance, so you can enjoy the live excitement as the food is boldly grilled to a fragrant finish right in front of you.

They also have table seating, making it a good space for a calm, relaxed meal.

The popular menu item is "wara-yaki (straw-fire searing)." Wara-yaki is a cooking method in which bundled rice straw is set on fire to raise a flame, then ingredients are boldly seared over it.

The restaurant's style for "katsuo (bonito) no wara-yaki" is to sprinkle it with coarse salt and enjoy it with sliced garlic and myoga (Japanese ginger).

They also offer kaisen-don (seafood rice bowl) made with fresh seafood and ochazuke (rice with tea or broth).

The “Kaisen Futomaki” in the photo is a luxurious item packed so full of toppings over shari (vinegared sushi rice) made with red vinegar that it almost overflows. It is very filling and is also perfect To finish a meal.

kzsg01

The à la carte dishes were all Homemade, and everything was delicious. The simmered dishes were not too strongly seasoned, and the flavoring was very good. They carefully grilled each skewer one by one. They also had a wide selection of local sake. The fact that the staff are watched by the customers must be why they call it an izakaya theater. The service was bright and friendly, and I had a really fun time.

Source:kzsg01's review

nyamuzou

This lively restaurant turns wara-yaki (straw-fire grilling) into a kind of showtime. It's great that the menu is handwritten and changes daily. Many of the dishes are Homemade, and the owner spends spare moments constantly sharpening knives, which makes this the kind of place you can trust even from those small details. In regional areas, places like this that work hard as local independents rather than chain restaurants are the fun ones to visit!

I thought a restaurant specializing in saba (mackerel) dishes was pretty rare, so I visited with a friend when I went back home. The inside was bright and spacious, with a fairly relaxed atmosphere. While staying near Tokuyama Station, I wandered around the area looking to have a drink by myself... I was drawn in by the gyoza and went inside, where I found out that even solo diners can order All you can drink. With gyoza as a snack over 90 minutes, I ended up drinking quite a lot... Both the pan-fried gyoza and boiled gyoza were good, but what I really got hooked on were the tomato sour and Dragon highball made with Shaoxing wine♪

Our restaurant is right in front of the station! Its biggest appeal may be that you can drop in quickly in a casual taishu izakaya (casual Japanese pub) style setting, and with fast table turnover, it is easy to stop by even when you do not have much time. Gyoza are the kind of food you could call a Japanese soul food, so everyone loves them, right? These gyoza have a pretty standard taste.

The fresh seafood dishes served from the fish tank inside Sakana Ichiba are excellent. They also have a wide selection of local sake that pairs well with seafood, so it is a great pick for sake lovers too. I drank hot Dassai sake. I enjoyed fresh seafood, mainly local specialties. The ika (squid) was especially good. I had some as sashimi and the rest made into tempura, and it was sweet. I enjoyed not only the different textures from each preparation, but also the difference in flavor.

The night before a trip to Shimonoseki for an errand, and my first time in Shimonoseki. I visit Shimonoseki often, but this was my first time going out at night. There was a great izakaya district near the hotel. The whole squid sashimi was the best. The steamed clams with sake had a great broth, and they served it piping hot at the table in a Hot Pot style. Of course, I also ordered a sashimi assortment and was able to enjoy a seafood feast to my heart's content, leaving me Manzoku.

[Hofu, Yamaguchi Prefecture] Recommended Izakaya (Japanese pubs)

Kurakura

Kurakura is an izakaya (Japanese pub) located in central Hofu City, about a 10-minute walk from Hofu Station on the JR Sanyo Main Line. The interior is said to have a calm space with a Japanese feel, accented by bamboo decorations, giving it the atmosphere of a hidden retreat.

Inside, where time seems to pass at an easy pace, there are spacious counter seats and table seats.

Based on the concept of being above an izakaya (Japanese pub) but below a kappo (traditional Japanese fine dining) restaurant, they serve dishes made with seasonal ingredients sourced from the local market.

The course Appetizers assortment is colorfully plated with items such as aigamo roast (roasted duck), tomorokoshi mousse (corn mousse), mozuku-su (vinegared mozuku seaweed), and madai ume-zushi (Sea Bream sushi with plum). It is also well known for its beautiful presentation.

The madai (Sea Bream) Clay Pot rice, which you can enjoy either as part of a course or à la carte, has the soft texture and refined taste that only freshly cooked rice can offer.

It is perfect To finish a meal, and the rich flavor of the madai soaks well into the rice. Since it takes about 40 minutes to serve, they recommend ordering it early.

I visited for the first time since the renovation. The parking lot behind the restaurant was already full by opening time. No matter what I ate, every dish was insanely delicious and made me feel genuinely happy. The ingredients, flavors, and combinations were all top notch, and I want to try everything on the menu.

ゴルオジ

After seeing it on Tabelog, it looked delicious, so I made a reservation and visited for the first time. Since it was Saturday, the restaurant had a large counter and table seating, but it was full by 7 o’clock. The food menu was extensive, and everything we ordered was tasty. We also tried two kinds of Japanese sake from Yamaguchi, and both were good, which was Surprising.

Kushiyaki Karyoku

Kushiyaki Karyoku is an izakaya (Japanese pub) in a convenient location about a 7-minute walk from Hofu Station on the JR Sanyo Main Line.

The interior has a calm Japanese modern feel, with counter and table seating, and it is said to be easy to use for a wide range of occasions, from meals with family or friends to dining alone.

The kushiyaki (grilled skewers) are carefully grilled over Kishu Binchotan (premium white charcoal from Kishu), and each one is a fine dish made with a skilled grill master's attention to everything from selecting the ingredients to skewering and grilling.

Fresh chicken is hand-skewered every day, then grilled to a fragrant finish with tare sauce, salt, or dashi shoyu (soy sauce with soup stock) chosen to match each skewer.

Homemade snacks to enjoy while you wait for the kushiyaki (grilled skewers) to finish cooking are well liked.

The seasonal menu is also extensive, and the "Seasonal Fruit and Cheese Wrapped in Prosciutto" is a popular Appetizers dish. This luxurious item wraps seasonal fruit and cheese in prosciutto. It also pairs well with wine and Japanese sake.

My mother and I made a reservation because we wanted to eat some good yakitori (grilled chicken skewers). The salt seasoning felt a little strong in some dishes, but overall it lived up to our expectations. I thought it would be a good place to come back to with my family. The staff also worked briskly, which made for a pleasant experience.

The grilled skewer liver is excellent! I ordered all the specialties, and the overall level was pretty high, wasn’t it? The quail eggs, seseri (neck meat), and more were really delicious. I think this place deserves more recognition.

Recommended izakaya in Iwakuni, Yamaguchi Prefecture

Iwakuni Enya

Iwakuni Enya is an izakaya (Japanese pub) located just steps from Iwakuni Station on the JR Sanyo Main Line, and also very close to Iwakuni-shi Nakamichi Station.

The counter seats are suitable even for solo diners, and the table seats are divided by partitions, so groups can also relax and enjoy their time.

Fresh fish landed in nearby waters centered on the Setonaikai (Seto Inland Sea), along with charcoal grilled dishes, are well regarded.

The "hasami-age (fried lotus root sandwich)" made with Iwakuni renkon (Iwakuni lotus root) is a dish where the crisp lotus root holds in the flavors of meat and seafood. They offer Japanese sake from five Iwakuni breweries, including "Dassai" and "Gangi," so you can enjoy it with the food.

The photo shows the popular “wakadori no hanshin-age (deep-fried half young chicken) (served with secret spicy miso).” They deep-fry half a chicken in a bold style, and you can enjoy the juicy, tender meat.

The secret spicy miso adds a nice accent, making this a dish that goes well with both food and drinks.

The signature dish, hanmi-age (deep-fried half chicken), is quite filling, with a moderate saltiness that makes it perfect with drinks (the photo shows it after the staff cut it up for us). I can see why Gangi, a sake from Iwakuni, is known for being crisp and easy to drink. It is not all that dry, and it is smooth and tasty! They poured it right up to the brim, so I was feeling pretty good. The rice ball at the end was also nice and warm, and delicious.

The kushiyaki (grilled skewers) had a lovely aroma from the charcoal fire, and the tamari-zuke (soy-marinated) liver had a moist, refined texture. Every dish was tasty, with solid portions at this price. The flavor, the amount, and the service all felt very fair. It was comfortable and easy to relax here, so I recommend it.
