Recommended izakaya in Nagano Prefecture's Matsumoto, Utsukushigahara, and Kamikochi areas

Yamazato

Yamazato is a restaurant run by Shuraku Co., Ltd., a company headquartered in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture, that operates izakaya serving local cuisine and more.

The stylish Yamazato has a U-shaped counter and zashiki (tatami seating), where you can enjoy Shinshu (Nagano) local cuisine and game meat.

In Matsumoto, "sanzoku-yaki (garlic soy-marinated fried chicken)" made by marinating chicken thigh in garlic soy sauce is a local favorite. The restaurant's "Meibutsu Matsumoto Sanzoku-yaki" is said to be a hearty bone-in dish.

Regional specialties from around Shinshu (Nagano) and local game such as venison and wild boar are also popular.

They offer Japanese sake and shochu that go well with Japanese food. There is also a wide lineup of alcohol such as wine and umeshu (plum wine), many with ties to Shinshu, so you can enjoy pairing them with the food.

They also have restaurant-limited kuradashi tokubetsu-shu (freshly released Special sake from the brewery) in an easy-to-finish 300ml size.

オヤジ飯長野

The restaurant’s atmosphere and menu had both been completely refreshed, and it had gotten much better. Right by the entrance, there is a U-shaped counter that works well even for solo diners, and the Sunken kotatsu seating lets you stretch out your legs, which is nice❢ The menu still covers Nagano Prefecture’s local dishes well, while adding more polished creative dishes, and the soba is seriously good.

相沢ほたる

I ordered a lot, so I do not remember every name, but the ones that stood out were Shinshu red wine, otaguri (horse offal stew), and the salt-simmered beef tendon. The red wine had a light rose-like color with a refined look. Rather than the distinct aroma you might expect from red wine, it felt fruity and went smoothly through the nose. The taste was fruity too, and very easy to drink!

Kura no Mukou

Kura no Mukou is an izakaya that people say offers a wide variety of Shinshu (Nagano) sake and ingredients, and it stands in an easy-to-stop-by location just a 1-minute walk from Matsumoto Station.

The interior, designed with the image of a sake brewery, has a purely Japanese feel, with counter seats and tatami rooms with Sunken kotatsu seating.

This restaurant lets you enjoy all kinds of Shinshu (Nagano area) specialties, and the noodle dish that is perfect To finish a night of drinks is the soba (buckwheat noodles) in the photo.

Here, they use finely milled Azumino flour from the production region to make thin noodles that go down smoothly and taste great.

Of course they serve basashi (horse sashimi), and they also offer a wide range of horse meat dishes and menu items made with local ingredients, including otaguri (horse offal stew) simmered in Shinshu miso (Shinshu-style miso).

The drinks selection also has a strong Shinshu touch, with a full lineup that includes Japanese sake, shochu, as well as wine and whisky.

My first time in Matsumoto! I got together with the usual group for drinks. When you think of Matsumoto, this is the place, so we booked right away. It was packed with reservations On-the-Day, so booking is a must. After beer, we drank about five kinds of jizake (local sake), while enjoying basashi (horse sashimi), sanzoku-yaki (Shinshu-style fried chicken), Shinshu salmon, horse meat gyoza, tonteki miso-yaki (grilled pork steak with miso), onigiri (rice balls), and To finish, two kinds of soba. We enjoyed so much food it almost felt like too much. The food and drinks were both excellent♪

てんてん1968

Partway through, I switched to Japanese sake, Daishinshu. Then I ordered the horse meat and Shinshu negi (Shinshu green onion) hoba-yaki, which pairs horse meat with hoba miso and plenty of green onion. Basashi (horse sashimi) is great too, of course, but hoba miso is something I always end up craving. This goes really well with Japanese sake! Since I wanted to visit one more place, I wrapped up here with soba to finish the meal for now. After all, if you come to Shinshu, it has to be soba! It's a classic. The sobayu (soba cooking water) was so comforting.

Matsumoto Han Sakaba Shuraku

This izakaya is operated by Kabushikigaisha Shuraku and is known for local sake, regional cuisine, and fresh seafood.

The cozy interior has a warm wooden feel, with counter and table seating, plus Semi-private room options for groups.

There are many menu items made with Special ingredients, and the Domestic basashi (horse sashimi) as well as fresh fish delivered from the Kanazawa Port production region in Ishikawa are also recommended.

For local specialties, they also offer the classic “Meibutsu Matsumoto Sanzoku-yaki” and a dish featuring Nozawana (Nozawa mustard greens), which is counted among Shinshu’s traditional vegetables.

Nagano Prefecture, with its good water and abundant nature, is also known as a region where Japanese sake brewing thrives.

At Matsumotohan Sakaba Shuraku, they serve Shinshu local Japanese sake, and you can also enjoy limited arrivals of sake from outside the prefecture.

はなはな9

I ordered Matsumoto's local specialty, sanzoku-yaki (fried chicken cutlet). Here, it seems to be a fried chicken dish. The coating was crispy, and it came topped with garlic chips, so it was quite filling. For yakitori, I ordered kosho botan (traditional Nagano pepper). I had mistaken it for wild boar meat, but it was actually a traditional vegetable from Nagano Prefecture. It looked like a green pepper and had a pleasantly spicy taste. The gyoza made with horse meat was also delicious.

うまいもん食べたいよー!

I wandered in again for an After-Party! The storefront looked cool, so I went in. They had local sake from Shinshu (Nagano) and also Denshu, so that instantly won me over! Matsumoto is such a great town! I want to come back at least one more time in my life! By the way, the sake in the photo labeled Hana was really good! Everyone, definitely give it a try!

Ganso Sutamina Yakitori Matsumoto Ekimae Ten

At Ganzo Sutamina Yakitori Matsumoto Ekimae Ten, a 3-minute walk from JR Matsumoto Station, popular menu items include their specialty sutamina-yaki (grilled stamina pork) and other meat dishes that go great with drinks.

The inside has a lively, upbeat atmosphere, and it is said to be an easy place to stop by in all kinds of situations, whether on your own after work or with friends and family on your day off.

The "sutamina-yaki (hearty grilled meat)" is a dish of chicken and pork motsu (offal) boldly grilled over charcoal until fragrant.

It is said to have an addictive flavor thanks to the special stamina sauce made with soy sauce, garlic, and ichimi (Japanese chili pepper). The charcoal grilled dishes also include classic yakitori (grilled chicken skewers).

The first beer is served with foam art. You can choose from a wide selection of drinks, including Nagano craft beer and Shinshu local sake.

Basashi (horse sashimi), which pairs well with alcohol, is also popular. Shinshu has a long-standing culture of eating horse meat, so it's also recommended to enjoy them together.

今日は何食べるん

Just a short walk from Matsumoto Station! I made an online reservation right before heading to the restaurant. There was a line waiting out front, but I got in quickly. They have a good selection of Nagano Japanese sake, and they pour it generously until it nearly overflows. The sauce on the stamina-yaki (grilled meat with a rich sauce) is great! I learned that boiling asparagus brings out more sweetness.

才戸礼須

When you order a draft beer, they put an illustration in the foam... I didn’t know they could do that even with such a stylish beer. I also ordered Nagano meibutsu (local specialty), sanzoku-yaki (Nagano-style fried chicken). It’s called yaki, or grilled, but in Nagano style it’s actually fried. It was crisp and tasty. The other chicken dishes were good too. (I was drunk and don’t remember much, though...)

Shinano no Teppen

Shinano no Teppen is an izakaya (Japanese pub) that is popular for its lively atmosphere and energetic service from the staff.

From the counter facing the open kitchen, you can watch the cooking in action, and some reviews say that this live feel is one of the seasonings that makes the food and drinks here taste even better.

For group visits, table seating is recommended, along with good value courses that come with All you can drink.

You can enjoy Teppan-yaki dishes at this izakaya (Japanese pub). They serve Japanese egg dishes like dashimaki tamago (rolled omelet with dashi), made by adding dashi to beaten eggs before cooking, and tonpeiyaki, where pork and cabbage are wrapped in a thin egg crepe.

At Shinano no Teppen, both the food and drinks are said to be hearty and tasty.

Nagano Prefecture is counted alongside Kumamoto Prefecture and Fukushima Prefecture as one of the three major production regions for basashi (horse sashimi).

Because basashi also pairs well with alcohol, you can find it at many izakaya in Nagano Prefecture. If you are getting together with people who enjoy drinking, the top recommendation is to pair local sake with basashi.

おじぽっくる0721

Among everything here, what really caught my eye was the dashimaki tamago (Japanese rolled omelet) and tonpeiyaki (griddled pork omelet)! They were recommended by the staff, so we gave them a try, and we definitely didn’t regret ordering them❗️It might have been a little too filling for two people… lol They also had local sake, and for me, a Japanese sake lover, it was an irresistible combination♪ I drank a little too much this time(笑)

Even when the place is full, the food comes out smoothly, the staff are very cheerful and work quickly, and they make sure to see customers off when they leave, so you can really enjoy your meal in a very pleasant atmosphere. The taste is great too, and it’s cheap but delicious!

オヤジ飯長野

・Nozawana (pickled mustard greens) tempura
This was a real eye-opener. I had no idea nozawana could be this good as tempura. Since it is already pickled and seasoned, I had it with just a squeeze of lemon and nothing else. I make nozawana pickles at home too, so I want to try making tempura with them next time‼️They also have a great selection of Shinshu Japanese sake. They offer courses with All you can drink, and there are reasonably priced courses too.

ウニコ✹

As someone who has loved miso since childhood—so much that I used to secretly scoop it up with a spoon and lick it little by little—the Shinshu miso (Nagano-style miso) was just too good. I wanted to take it home... It was my first time trying stewed horse motsu (offal), but it had fewer off notes than I expected, and I liked it. This is exactly the kind of dish that makes you want to keep drinking. Actually, every dish here makes the drinks go down fast.

Yoganyaki Nesshin

The izakaya (Japanese pub) Yogan-yaki Nesshin, near Matsumoto Station, is known for its lava grilled Nagano jidori (local chicken) and pork.

The menu features Nagano gourmet food, Shinshu (Nagano area) ingredients, and local sake, attracting a wide range of diners.

The yogan-yaki (lava stone grilling) here uses a lava plate from Mt. Fuji, which slowly cooks the meat over low heat so it turns out juicy, full of flavor, and nicely plump.

They offer (Each) cut of Shinshu Ougon Shamo (Shinshu Golden Gamefowl) and Shinshu Kometon (Shinshu Rice-Fed Pork), and you can also enjoy thinly sliced Beef Tongue.

For drinks, they offer about 10 kinds of local sake from Nagano Prefecture, including dry and light styles, and you can enjoy labels that change with the seasons.

They also have a good selection of shochu (Japanese distilled spirit) that pairs well with lava-grilled dishes, mainly sweet potato shochu, with standard picks, well-known labels, and limited editions to choose from.

K’real

The specialty here is enjoying various cuts of jidori (local chicken) from Nagano Prefecture grilled slowly on a stone in a style called yogan-yaki (lava stone grilling). They offer many different chicken cuts, as well as beef and pork. Since everything is grilled fairly slowly, it takes more time than regular Yakiniku, but I thought the carefully grilled chicken turned out juicy and tender, with all its flavor locked in, and tasted great.

montblanclapin

In the early morning and at dusk, you can feel the sharp chill unique to this mountain region, and what keeps you going in that kind of climate is sake, salt, and piping hot food. This restaurant, close to the nightlife area in front of Matsumoto Station, is a fun place where the good natured owner’s fiery spirit comes through in dishes that go well beyond what you expect. Rather than being the kind of place tourists visit to eat typical Shinshu (Nagano area) dishes, it is a place to enjoy Shinshu flavors in a bold, hearty way.

Recommended izakaya in Nagano Prefecture [Nagano, Shiga Kogen (Shiga Highlands), and Kita-Shinano Area]

Sakana Yamazaki Ekimae Ten

Shusai Yamazaki Ekimae Ten is a popular place where you can take your time and enjoy authentic Japanese cuisine in a cozy setting.

It is often fully booked, so making a reservation in advance gives you peace of mind. There is a wooden counter and Private rooms (available for 2 or more people) that are mainly reserved for course meals.

Nagano Prefecture may not face the sea, but Sakana Yamazaki Ekimae Ten is known for its good seafood.

They serve the day's top picks, such as hon-maguro (bluefin tuna) and nodoguro (blackthroat seaperch), so you can enjoy very fresh sashimi and sushi.

Be sure to try the motsuni (stewed Horumon) as a snack with drinks. The motsu (Horumon) is simmered just right, with a rich yet refined seasoning.

They also serve meat dishes such as basashi (horse sashimi) and local dishes like Shinshu kinoko no tempura (tempura of mushrooms from Shinshu), which you can enjoy with their wide variety of drinks.

ちゃこかん

And although Nagano is a landlocked prefecture, it has plenty of fish dishes, especially sashimi and sushi. We had hirame (flounder) otsukuri (sliced sashimi), hon-maguro akami (lean bluefin tuna), and octopus, and for the recommended 3-kind sashimi assortment, we had hotate (scallop), Sea Bream, and buri (yellowtail). Everything was fresh and very delicious. The basashi (horse sashimi) was also very fresh, and the fat melted in the mouth.

つきのわのプーさん

They also seem to have a selection of local sake you do not often see, so the lineup looks like it can meet the needs of Japanese sake lovers to a fair degree. After the bottled beer, I had Mizuo Special Junmai from Iiyama, and it was a fine Japanese sake with a nice aroma, a clean finish, and a solid body.

Speaking of Nagano, it's Banikuman

Speaking of Nagano, Banikuman is an izakaya where you can enjoy a full lineup of basashi (horse meat dishes) and local cuisine that lets you experience Nagano’s traditional food culture.

It is popular with locals and busy even on weekdays, so if you know your schedule, it is best to make a reservation before visiting.

The beautifully presented assortment of basashi (horse sashimi) features the recommended cuts of the day, so you can enjoy the differences in texture and flavor.

Because the meat is so fresh, not only the basashi but also horse meat dishes such as "[Inadani specialty] otaguri (horse offal simmered in miso)" and steak are said to be excellent.

Oyaki (stuffed wheat flour dumplings), a local Nagano specialty, is a healthy slow food made by wrapping fillings in a wheat flour dough. At this restaurant, they use nozawana (pickled Nozawana greens) and seasonal vegetables for the fillings.

They offer a wide range of alcoholic drinks, including fruit liqueurs unique to Shinshu, known for its high fruit production, as well as sommelier Special local sake.

たくちょん20363

Otaguri (a local Nagano dish) is made by simmering horse intestines. It has a slightly unusual distinctive flavor and goes well with alcohol. Since it is intestine, the texture is similar to Horumon. They recommended eating it with plenty of shichimi (Japanese seven-spice blend) sprinkled on top. They had soba shochu (buckwheat shochu), so I ordered it. It was a buckwheat shochu called Saku no Hana. It was easy to drink and very good.

This one restaurant alone let me fully enjoy the flavors of Nagano! It says horse meat starts from 2 servings, but if you go alone, it seems 1 serving is fine. It’s also close to the station, so I recommend it!

Hida Shokujidokoro

Hida Shokujidokoro, with easy access from Nagano Station’s west exit, is a popular restaurant furnished with folk craft style pieces that give it a sense of local history and charm.

During the day, it mainly serves meals, and at night people use it for dinner or as an izakaya (Japanese pub).

The dish in the photo is hoba-yaki (magnolia leaf grill), a local specialty loved in the Hida region, made by grilling miso, mushrooms, and sansai (mountain vegetables) on a magnolia leaf.

People say every dish is tasty, and there is a wide range of menu items that go well with drinks, including basashi (horse sashimi) and fresh seafood.

The drinks menu is broad, including Seishu Hida no Onikoroshi (Hida Demon Slayer sake) (350ml), a slightly dry honjozo in a ginjo style, along with Junmai Ginjo Daishinshu (180ml) and wines from Nagano Prefecture.

Be sure to enjoy good drinks and Shinshu soba (buckwheat noodles from Nagano) to round out your day.

suicagenki

This place was great! The food was delicious, the portions were generous, and even the All you can drink alcohol was very good! The grilled Sea Bream head was huge too! On top of that, the value for money was excellent. No wonder this is a place recommended by locals. I was Manzoku. It was a great meal.

It was my first visit, and everything was delicious. The menu has a wide variety of options, and calling it a casual dining spot may indeed be the best way to describe it. I tried hoba-yaki (grilled food on a magnolia leaf) for the first time, and it was so good that the drinks went down easy. The sanzoku-yaki (mountain bandit-style grilled chicken) had great flavor, and the portion was just right. I was impressed by the generous amount of ika-sashi (sliced raw squid). Even just the snack-type dishes were enough to fill me up, and it was easy on the wallet. This is definitely one of the places I will be coming back to.

The first thing you should try is the lean basashi (horse sashimi)! It was the first time I had ever had lean meat that fit the word “melting” this well. The moment it hit my mouth, it seemed to dissolve smoothly, with a silky texture on the tongue. This is really worth trying. The gyoza served on a Teppan-yaki plate also had crisp wrappers and juicy filling, a flavor that goes great with beer. To finish, the Shinshu soba (buckwheat noodles from Nagano) had a rich soba aroma, and I was completely Manzoku.

I was a little surprised, but it was really delicious. What stood out to me that day was how good Shinshu salmon was. The iwana (char) sashimi was great too. I could see why it is one of Nagano's top picks. Personally, I really liked the seared beef Tenderloin and basashi (horse sashimi). I drank a little too much. I ended up regretting that again, but it was a Manzoku evening.

For meat dishes, the restaurant also highly recommends its charcoal-grilled "Shinshu Premium Beef Top sirloin Aburi-yaki (lightly seared) (80g)."

The course with All you can drink includes Shinshu gourmet dishes that let you enjoy the local flavor, such as salt grilled Azumino-produced rainbow trout.

This plan also lets you fully enjoy Yona Yona Ale, a craft beer born in Nagano and Karuizawa, along with 10 kinds of local sake.

I had no idea at all, but Nagano ranks second in Japan for rainbow trout production. I’m adding that to my list as one of Nagano’s local specialties. They have all kinds of dishes, including seafood and soba noodles, so it gave me the impression of an all-genre menu! I had such a great time that I ended up staying there with the 3-hour All you can drink plan. lol

Jidori (local chicken) to Amiyaki (charcoal grill) Private room Izakaya Torisho Nagano Ekimae Ten

A 1-minute walk from Nagano Station, Jidori to Amiyaki Koshitsu Izakaya Torisho Nagano Ekimae Ten is on the 3rd floor of Nacs Suehiro, where you can also dine and stay overnight. This izakaya is known for its wide variety of Japanese dishes that make the most of quality ingredients, including jidori (local chicken) dishes.

It also has fully private rooms, so it is a great choice when you want to prioritize a sense of privacy.

A wide range of chicken dishes is popular here, including jidori (local chicken) with the added fragrant aroma of charcoal grill net cooking. Some dishes are also served with yuzu kosho (spicy citrus pepper paste), which adds a fresh flavor and a bit of heat.

The sukiyaki (Japanese sweet savory Hot Pot) is also recommended, and this restaurant uses jidori thigh meat in it.

They offer assorted varieties available courses with All you can drink, which is a nice plus since you can choose based on your budget and the menu content.

The 9-course "Mankitsu Course" is said to be popular, featuring jidori (local chicken) Teppan-yaki and a closing dish you can choose from either chicken Clay Pot rice or seasonal Clay Pot rice.

This chicken izakaya (Japanese pub) was comfortable, and the drinks came out quickly. Each portion was large, so I enjoyed sharing them with friends. It is also great for large groups, and the lively atmosphere was very nice. I would like to go again. Thank you.

Recommended izakaya in the Karuizawa and Saku area of Nagano Prefecture

Yakitori Higumo

Yakitori Higumo is a yakitori specialist in Karuizawa (a popular highland resort area), in eastern Nagano Prefecture.

It is a stylish single-story standalone house. The refined and calm interior includes counter seats in front of the grill, making it a great place to enjoy like an adult izakaya (Japanese pub).

The yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) here is said to be delicious, with careful prep that includes how the chicken is cut and skewered. The heat is handled just right, bringing out the quality of the ingredients.

The tsukune soup, known for its tasty dashi broth, and charcoal grilled vegetables from Nagano Prefecture are also recommended..

You can enjoy Japanese sake, including local labels from each season, starting with sake from Tomono Shuzo in Saku, Nagano Prefecture.

They also offer a solid lineup of alcohol, including whisky and glass or bottle wine (assorted varieties available). To finish, their house-made chicken broth shio and Shoyu Ramen really hit the spot.

The yakitori was cooked to perfection and tasted great. Maybe because they prepare everything so carefully, it was very good, and it went especially well with the soy sauce on the table. The tsukune (chicken meatball) soup also had a great dashi (Japanese soup stock), and it really hit the spot on a chilly evening. To finish I had the grilled rice ball, and that was tasty too. I’d like to visit again when I come to Karuizawa (a resort town in Nagano).

The yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) is thick and juicy, and the kawa (chicken skin) in particular is a must-try. It felt like a completely different dish from the usual chicken skin out there. From the counter, I found myself watching the owner from behind as he grilled the chicken, along with the smooth and efficient way the staff served beer and shochu (Japanese distilled spirit), and I finished with Chicken Shio Ramen at the end. A Manzoku yakitori feast!

Ishokuan Enishiya

Ishokuan Enishiya in Naka-Karuizawa is a well-regarded restaurant where you can fully enjoy Shinshu (Nagano regional) cuisine made with a strong focus on local production for local consumption.

During the day, many local people stop by for lunch, and at night it seems to shift into the atmosphere of a casual izakaya (Japanese pub).

The recommended local specialty is Shinshu meibutsu tori no sanzokuyaki (Shinshu specialty mountain bandit-style fried chicken), available in portions ranging from half to 4 pieces.

The chicken, marinated in a house-made sauce, has a nice garlic aroma, and paired with the special sweet vinegar sauce, it seems perfect with a drink.

They offer a wide drink selection, including Japanese whisky and Japanese sake from Shinshu.

There are selectable All you can drink courses with different lineups and time limits, and if you want to drink at a relaxed pace, the "Gatsubero Plan 120 minutes," which even includes draft beer and Japanese sake, is the top recommendation.

First, I was surprised by how many drinks were on the menu! I was surprised by how spacious the place is! And then I was surprised by how big the portions are! The restaurant’s top picks include tori sanzokuyaki (grilled chicken bandit-style), simmered pork loin cutlet, niku dofu nabe (meat and tofu Hot Pot), kimchi tofu Chige, and simmered beef tendon, all of which go well with drinks and are filling too. I think it’s more fun to go with family, friends, or a big group so you can try lots of different dishes.

This really feels like a local izakaya (Japanese pub), and the atmosphere is nice too. I ordered their specialty, sanzoku-yaki (garlic-seasoned grilled chicken). It had a good kick of garlic and was very satisfying. The Nozawana tempura was also crisp and tasty. To finish, I ordered yatarameshi and nozawana-zuke (pickled Nozawana greens), but be aware that the ochazuke portion is enough for two people, so it is quite large.

Shinshu Soba Miyoshiya

Shinshu Soba Miyoshiya, near the north exit of Karuizawa Station, is known for its delicious teuchi soba (handmade buckwheat noodles), and at night you can use it like an izakaya dining bar.

The stylish interior, with its finely crafted wood details, and the warm service from the staff create a cozy atmosphere.

This Shinshu soba (buckwheat noodles from Shinshu) is made with buckwheat flour from Nagano Prefecture. The soba goes down smoothly, and the dipping sauce, made with Nagano soy sauce, mirin, and dashi, is said to be excellent.

They also serve sobako no pizza (buckwheat flour pizza), which is popular for its toasty aroma, and the rich Shinshu miso sauce is said to pair well with it.

The restaurant serves Japanese and Western small plates that pair well with drinks, including the often sold-out Sea Bream and shungiku (garland chrysanthemum) carpaccio.

For alcohol, they seem to have a full lineup including local sake from Nagano Prefecture, cocktails, and whiskey.

Before having the hand-cut soba at Tsukimi, we had nozawana (pickled mustard greens) potato salad, grilled chicken neck, and shungiku (garland chrysanthemum) and Sea Bream carpaccio, among other dishes. The shungiku dish seemed to be very popular and sold out early. They also have standard items like itawasa (sliced kamaboko with wasabi), but these somewhat unexpected soba-shop snacks are very tasty here. We ended up drinking a lot of Japanese sake, mainly Saku and local Nagano labels.

About 2 minutes from Karuizawa Station. This restaurant is in a great location. The pizza, soba, and potato salad were all delicious. We had All you can drink and ended up drinking a lot, so I felt like we might have caused some trouble. But the staff were also extremely kind, and we were able to enjoy our meal comfortably.
