I planned a one-night trip to Karuizawa and made a reservation for Saturday night. I was lucky to secure a spot about a week in advance.
The restaurant was nearly full, but there was one cancellation, so we got a table.
They cook everything over a wood fire, and there’s a wood-fired oven right in front of the counter, creating a lively atmosphere.
We started with a spring bean soup, which had a sweetness balanced by the freshness of the beans—definitely an adult flavor. I really enjoyed it.
Next, we had Baba Ghanoush (roasted eggplant paste) and a simple dough pizza topped only with cheese and olive oil. The dough itself was sweet and paired well with the sauce.
The roasted vegetables were plentiful and very satisfying. We ate them with salt, and this time, the young corn was particularly delicious.
The spare ribs had a wonderful smoky aroma and were quite filling.
You can choose from two types of pizza. It was tough to decide since everything looked delicious, but I went with the Nozawana (Japanese pickled greens) and asparagus. The Nozawana had a sesame sauce and sesame tofu, giving it a Japanese flavor, while the asparagus was mild and tasty. I want to try the others too!
For dessert, we had baked apples from the oven with walnut ice cream. It was delicious until the very end.
I also bought some bread to take home.
The conversation with the staff was enjoyable, making this the best restaurant I visited this year! I definitely want to come back the next time I'm in Karuizawa.
