Today, I decided to make a reservation at this restaurant to enjoy Italian cuisine before shopping in Karuizawa. I’m bringing my dog along, and I’m really grateful that this place allows dogs indoors.
Since there’s no parking available, I parked at a nearby coin parking lot and arrived at the reserved time. As I walked towards the restaurant, I couldn’t find it on Google Maps... There was an Italian restaurant, but it had a different name, which made me wonder if the place had closed down. Just then, I spotted a sign for the restaurant next to the stairs—it’s on the second floor.
Upon climbing the stairs and entering the restaurant, I was pleased to see that both my dog and I were welcomed warmly. However, the stairs to the second floor are quite steep, and the interior isn’t very spacious, so bringing a cart might be challenging. My cart is a larger one for two dogs, so I had to disassemble it to carry it upstairs.
On the second floor, there’s a terrace seating area, and they prepared a spot for us at the very back, which made it comfortable for us with the dog. At 11:30 AM on a weekday, there were only two other groups in the restaurant—perhaps it’s not too busy today. So, I started checking the menu.
However, the prices are a bit, no, quite high. Well, since Karuizawa is a tourist destination, I suppose it’s just the tourist pricing, but I was surprised to see prices on par with Tokyo. I wonder if the land costs are high in this area or if they use premium ingredients, so I took my time to check.
We decided to order pasta and pizza from the lunch menu, choosing:
Uni Cream Sauce (JPY 3600)
Bismarck with Soft-Boiled Egg and Chicken Ham (JPY 3300)
We’ll share these two dishes. Spending JPY 7000 for lunch is a bit tough for someone like me, a working-class person, but I suppose it’s okay to indulge once in a while.
The lunch set comes with a house salad and a drink. The house salad arrived first, and it was said to have a "homemade dressing." It had a lovely sesame aroma and was very delicious. However, the portion was quite small; I finished it in just two bites. I wished I could have savored it a bit more.
After a few minutes, the Uni Cream Sauce arrived, followed closely by the Bismarck with Soft-Boiled Egg and Chicken Ham. It was nice that both dishes arrived at the same time since we were sharing, but I’ve noticed that at the Italian restaurant I often visit in Kawaguchi, they serve dishes at different times for sharing, allowing each dish to be enjoyed warm. I wonder how this simultaneous serving stacks up in terms of service. Well, I guess there are various opinions on this, so this is just my personal take.
- Uni Cream Sauce
The rich sauce combined with al dente pasta and the sweetness of the uni made it very delicious. However, the portion was quite small. As shown in the photo, it’s probably less than 100g. For women or those with smaller appetites, it might be just right, but for men, I’d recommend ordering a large size.
- Bismarck with Soft-Boiled Egg and Chicken Ham
On the other hand, the pizza was quite substantial. The combination of pasta and pizza was satisfying in terms of quantity. The moist texture of the chicken ham, the soft-boiled egg, and the flavor of the spinach were all excellent. The pizza crust was soft and very satisfying.
Finally, I enjoyed an iced coffee and said, "It was a great meal."
