As you walk down Karuizawa Main Street with the station behind you, a modern building suddenly appears to your right.
After passing by several times, I discovered that it was a restaurant attached to a hotel. Since it was a Spanish restaurant, which I love, I decided to visit for breakfast for the first time.
I ordered the
【Breakfast Course JPY 1,800, tax included】.
The set includes a "main dish" + a "platter of tapas and salad" + a "drink" + "soup".
For the main dish, you can choose from six options including Spanish-style pizza, Hamburg steak, and French toast. The drink, soup, and croissants can all be refilled freely from the counter bar.
(Additionally, you can also opt for just the drink bar and appetizer platter for JPY 1,000 without adding a main.)
This time, my friend and I chose【Roasted Fried Chicken】and【Clay Pot Squid Ink Cartozo (paella-style rice)】as our mains.
The first thing that surprised me when the Roasted Fried Chicken was served was its portion size. It was as large as a dinner main course.
When I cut into the crispy, thin batter, I felt a firm texture, but it was still juicy and not dry at all. The sauce served on the side was lightly flavored, so I asked for additional salt.
The squid ink paella seemed to have a lighter flavor, possibly because it's designed for morning hours and is broth-heavy, giving it a more porridge-like quality, which contrasts with its appearance.
On the other hand, I was pleased that I could freely refill my coffee, juice, soup, and croissants from the counter bar.
The small croissant had a strong buttery flavor, the minestrone soup was delicious, and the coffee was quite flavorful, indicating that the restaurant's overall quality is solid. Being able to refill these items as many times as I wanted truly added to my enjoyment.
【Overall Impression】
Although the mains and the platter seemed somewhat lacking in flavor due to being mildly seasoned, the items available for refill at the counter bar were enticing enough to more than compensate at this price point.
Furthermore, the owner has a background running the original flagship store in Madrid, so both the exterior and interior decor are very sophisticated, and the Spanish furniture inside is beautiful.
Considering that there are not many places to eat in Karuizawa, having breakfast in such a clean restaurant made me feel completely at ease, almost like a regular routine.
The relaxed atmosphere of spending time in this refined and lovely space reminded me of the restaurants I was captivated by in Madrid and Barcelona.
