Nanakusa Shokudo is an Italian restaurant that opened last year in the Shiozawa area of Karuizawa.
I made my first visit in the evening.
The interior is cozy and not too spacious, with a total of 28 seats... about 6 counter-style seats side by side and the rest are table seats. Surrounded by trees visible from the window, the trendy interior offers a bright atmosphere with no pretentiousness at all.
The prices reflect being in Karuizawa, and I feel that each dish is slightly on the higher side compared to usual.
On this day, the clientele included families seemingly visiting relatives in Karuizawa and many couples.
Here’s what I ordered:
"Summer Limited Appetizer Platter of 3 Types" / JPY 2000
- Smoked salmon and corn potato salad
... The gentle sweetness of the corn is a great accent.
- Octopus and cherry tomatoes marinated in olive oil and basil
... The octopus is fresh and the olive pits are properly removed, allowing the marinade to flavor the dish well.
- Fried small shrimp and avocado with tartar sauce
... The homemade tartar sauce is filled with chunks of boiled egg yolk and white, making it delicious. The small shrimp are fried to a crispy light texture, and the shrimp have a nice bite yet are easy to chew.
"Sardine Fillets in Oil with Sliced Baguette" / JPY 850
... The sardines are so tender that you can even eat the bones. The quality of the ingredients shines through, with absolutely no unpleasant taste, and the delicious seasoning with olive oil brings out the umami. The baguette is warm, with a rustic taste that has just the right amount of salt.
Of course, the combination of the oil sardine and baguette is excellent.
"Pasta with Garlic, Boiled Shirasu, and Fresh Aonori" / JPY 1800
Aromas of garlic and aonori rise with the steam. The garlic flavor is refined, allowing the aonori to shine without being overpowering in this "garlic pasta." The pasta itself isn't al dente, but it’s still very tasty. The generous amount of shirasu makes this dish feel luxurious.
Every dish I had was beautifully prepared and delicious. While the prices are a bit steep, that’s quite understandable for Karuizawa.
With a fairly wide variety of wines available, it’s a place where one can casually enjoy delicious meals alongside good wine.
