For dinner, we headed to "Meli-Melo," a quaint French restaurant located just a short drive off the main road in Shiozawa.
Cold Appetizer: Pâté of river fish with roe, served with clear tomato sauce and a foam of roasted bell pepper.
Warm Appetizer: Confit of chicken gizzards and thigh meat with purée of autumn eggplant, presented in a crispy kadaif style.
Soup: Chilled soup made with sweet corn from Karuizawa, accompanied by consommé jelly.
Main Course: Smoked roasted Mangalica pork from Hokkaido with original BBQ sauce.
STAUB Rice: Rice cooked with Nagano-grown beef Bolognese.
Dessert: Peach panna cotta with grapes.
Mignardises (petit fours).
Coffee.
Homemade bread made with rice flour and whole wheat flour.
The use of foam, the elegant presentation of the dishes, and other charming touches made for a delightful dining experience, leaving me thoroughly satisfied!
The wine selection featured local Japanese wines from Nagano, which I enjoyed by the glass.
If I had a vacation home in Karuizawa, I could probably enjoy such exquisite meals every day... (though I probably couldn't ^^). I was once again impressed by how comfortable and welcoming this historic resort area of Karuizawa is.
