2019.8.1 |
This restaurant just opened last year in a little alley off Ginza Street in Old Karuizawa.
If you enter the alley opposite Mikado Coffee, which is famous for its mocha soft serve, you'll find it next to the long-established tempura restaurant, Manki.
With its modern and stylish appearance, the name is written in English, and without a menu sign, you might mistakenly think it’s a trendy bar.
The place is run by two handsome staff members, so if it's busy, there might be a bit of a wait.
I ordered the roast beef and avocado pizza and an apple-banana smoothie.
The dough is rounded and is pressed thin using a special toaster-like device, then topped with roast beef and other ingredients. You can choose from three types of sauces to drizzle on before folding it over and wrapping it up.
The smoothie is freshly made to order, blending various ingredients, which adds to the preparation time and effort.
The combination of the chewy pizza dough and roast beef surprisingly complements each other well. The original sauce is light but has just the right level of flavor.
I tried the smoothie for the first time, and it had the taste and texture I expected in a good way.
It was refreshing to find a place in Karuizawa that made me think, "This is delicious!" after quite some time.
Running a food business on this street must be challenging, as many places aside from tempura Manki and the black udon shop seem to open and close every few years. In the past, Manki would have long queues during busy seasons, but it hasn't had the same momentum in recent years.
Oh! Marukan Shokudo is also doing well.
In any case, there are very few casual dining spots in Karuizawa where you can enjoy decent food, making this restaurant a rare gem.
I truly hope it continues for a long time.
