Tsuruya Ryokan is a small boutique onsen ryokan located on the famous Karuizawa Ginza Street. It is centrally situated, and the service is impeccable. The interior beautifully blends traditional Japanese and old European influences. (Karuizawa was inspired by a Canadian who missed his home, giving it a distinctly old-style Western ambiance.) By the way, this ryokan serves as the setting for one of Higashino Keigo's mystery novels.
The Kaiseki course (traditional Japanese meal) began with shrimp and green beans. Next, I enjoyed blowfish sashimi, perfectly paired with my sake that arrived just in time. The chawanmushi with carrot sauce was an interesting twist on the classic dish. The clear soup with shrimp dumplings and salad was excellent for resetting the palate. The smoked chicken and sashimi were delightful, while the stewed pork, prepared on a personal contraption, added a nice touch. The fried dish and chestnut rice served at the end were a lovely finishing touch before the dessert of gateaux chocolat and orange cheesecake. This place exudes a romantic and dreamy atmosphere.
