October 2025, first purchase.
This store is about a 20-minute walk from Karuizawa Station and specializes in sausages, with locations throughout the tourist areas of Karuizawa.
I entered the store just after 4 PM on a weekday. I was walking around the tourist area, sampling food from various places.
While there are some eat-in options available, my goal this time was to buy packaged products, so I carefully assessed what was available before making my purchase:
- Nuremberg Sausage (JPY 907)
- Frankfurt Wurst (JPY 1,123)
I got one of each, a slender sausage and a thicker one typical of German sausages.
When grilled, the sausages had a firm meat texture despite their slender appearance, leaving a satisfying taste that lingered more than expected. They paired well with a light beer.
I later learned that the Wurst is better boiled, but I tried grilling it as well. The skin burst with juices, and the meat inside was tender. It seemed to be finely ground rather than coarsely, and it had a flavor that would likely complement a maltier beer. This is just my personal opinion, of course.
I enjoyed the sausages over several days, and I finally got to taste a place I had known by name for a long time. It was indeed delicious and reasonably priced. I’m not sure if this is the go-to souvenir from Karuizawa, but if you’re nearby, I highly recommend it.
It was a great meal.
