I visit Karuizawa every year.
When my children were younger, we stayed at Prince Karuizawa (West Cottage), and as they grew up, we've used Manpei, Kashima no Mori, and recently, The Prince Karuizawa.
I've tried the breakfasts at each hotel; however, the New York-style breakfast at Prince West (JPY 2,500) is quite crowded and noisy, with average dishes.
The Western-style breakfast at Kashima no Mori (JPY 2,800?) is traditional, and both the taste and restaurant ambiance felt just like a regular city hotel breakfast.
On the other hand, the breakfast at Beaux Sejours at The Prince Karuizawa (JPY 3,500) is priced a bit higher, but it truly satisfies as a luxurious resort French restaurant.
First of all, the atmosphere of the restaurant is completely different from that of Kashima no Mori, filled with a resort vibe, allowing for a calm and relaxing dining experience.
The dishes are stylish and well-presented, delicious, and really immerse you in that resort feeling—especially the vegetables, which were fantastic.
If I could make a suggestion, the appetizers, soup, and main dishes all come out at once, but I would prefer the soup and main dishes to be served a little while after the appetizers. When everything arrives at once, I have to rush to drink the hot soup and risotto before they get cold.
While it’s perhaps customary for breakfast to be served simultaneously, it would be more enjoyable to sip on coffee and savor the appetizers before indulging in the warm dishes.
Also, when eating the croissant, crumbs fall all over the table. I would appreciate it if the staff cleaned up the crumbs even without being prompted when clearing plates. It feels a bit awkward for a customer to mention crumbs after paying JPY 3,500 for breakfast.
While perhaps the focus on such details may not be common during breakfast service, it would still be nice...
For lunch, I recommend the least expensive option at JPY 2,700 (?). The portion is appropriate for the price, but like breakfast, it is stylish and tasty.
The service follows standard French dining, with appetizers, main dishes, and dessert served in succession rather than all at once.
If you want to relish a luxurious, extraordinary moment in Karuizawa, I highly recommend visiting Beaux Sejours.
Even those staying at Manpei and Kashima no Mori should consider dining here at least once.
