I had heard that reservations weren't possible, so I had given up, but when I stayed at a Hoshino Resort hotel, I was able to scan a QR code in the lobby to wait for my turn. This allowed me to enter at just the right time while taking a stroll.
This casual dining spot offers a taste of the rich blessings of Shinshu. It is inspired by novelist Tatsuji Hori's description of Karuizawa as a "beautiful village," and aims to welcome visitors with delicious cuisine.
The space is stylish and open, filled with greenery and soft light. Although the lighting is somewhat dim, it creates a cozy atmosphere that enhances the natural feel of the place.
The menu is based on local dishes that make abundant use of seasonal ingredients from Shinshu. Among them, the "Shinshu Colorful Gozen" allows you to enjoy a variety of Shinshu flavors in small portions and is the signature dish that encapsulates the charm of Sonmin Shokudo. The luxurious "Wagyu's Indulgent Hitsumabushi" and the classic Shinshu "Miso Sanzoku-yaki Set Meal" are also popular choices. There are plenty of options for children, making it a family-friendly dining experience.
They even have picture books available for kids.
The price range is on the higher side, giving it a tourist-oriented restaurant vibe.
Due to its popularity, especially during lunch hours and on holidays, there can be a wait. If you want to secure a seat, it's best to arrive 30 minutes before opening to get a numbered ticket.
Located about 15 minutes by car from Karuizawa Station and about 5 minutes from Nakakaruizawa Station, it is conveniently close to Tombo no Yu. There is parking available, but it can get crowded, so early arrival is advisable.
