Escaping the scorching heat of Saitama, I headed to Karuizawa.
After shopping at the local market, I felt hungry.
This is Karuizawa, where stylish shops line the streets.
Suddenly, I thought, "Japanese people surely love soba!"
I remembered "Kagimotoya," a famous place featured on the show "Genki ga Deru Terebi" with the amusing Meijin from my younger days, and made my way to Nakakaruizawa.
Finding parking at the station was easy since it was a Tuesday.
However, Kagimotoya's free parking lot was already full, with even a small bus parked there.
In the blazing sun, I waited with six other groups (at 12:00).
When it was my turn to write my name, the customers ahead of me were stuck. They were from China and seemed to have trouble writing their names in katakana, so they were searching on their phones.
I guess we need to adapt to globalization in situations like this.
Once inside near the entrance, I ordered the "Sansai Soba."
As expected from a long-established restaurant, there were autographed photos of famous people on the walls.
Next to Ohtake Shinsuke's signature was that of Akashiya Sanma.
Now, about the food—oh my, the broth is delicious! It must be the water; it’s the best.
And the soba was truly soba, with a rich flavor from the buckwheat.
This is 100% soba; if I had ordered it warm, it would have turned into a mushy mess while waiting.
As I chewed, the flavor spread in my mouth.
So good!! The surprise was the broth, which is exquisite. I drank it diluted with soba-yu (soba water), then added more broth and wasabi—couldn’t stop!
The soba had a slightly wider, rustic style and was consistently good.
If it’s this busy on a weekday, I can only imagine how crowded it gets on weekends.
I definitely want to come back.
Thank you for the wonderful meal today!
