| Restaurant highlights |
A renowned establishment featuring stone-ground soba, delightful sake snacks, and a wide selection of fine sake.
Kawakami-an, located at the entrance of Karuizawa Ginza, aims to embody the stylish essence of a traditional Edo-period soba shop, where you can enjoy a drink with some thoughtful snacks and finish off with a steaming bowl of soba. |
I visited on a weekday at 11:45 AM. I had originally planned to arrive much earlier, but unexpectedly, the Shinkansen was delayed, and I ended up arriving at this time... There were already over 20 people in line.
It was quite cold that day, making the terrace seats unpopular. Since I preferred to sit indoors, I waited about 40 minutes before being seated.
Finally seated, I placed my order with the staff. This time, I ordered the Tempura Soba (JPY 2,860) and a Warm Vegetable Salad (JPY 1,650).
After a little over 10 minutes, my dishes were served. First up was the warm salad. True to its name, it looked vibrant. The vegetables were lightly fried and drizzled with a sweet and tangy sauce. The freshness of the vegetables was remarkable, and their flavors were rich and delicious.
Next was the soba. The buckwheat flavor was strong, and it seemed to have no binding agents. It had a nice chewiness and went down smoothly. This was incredibly tasty! The soba dipping sauce didn’t stand out as particularly different from others, but it was rich and paired perfectly with the soba.
Then came the tempura. I ordered the "up" version, and it was quite generous in portion. It included large shrimp, lotus root, eggplant, shiso, pumpkin, and potatoes. The quantity was impressive. Upon tasting, I could tell immediately that the oil quality was high, as it was perfectly crispy and light. Despite the large portion, it was so light that I finished it easily. The salt served alongside was a coarse salt, reminiscent of rock salt.
I was truly impressed by the high-level quality of the soba and tempura. It’s no wonder this place is so popular. The flavors make me want to return, even if I have to wait in line again.
It was a great meal! I will definitely come back!
