Udon Shikisai

Udon Shikisai is located near the border between Tsurumi Ward in Osaka City and Higashiosaka City, about an 8-minute walk from JR Hanaten Station. It is a udon specialty restaurant that draws lines on some days.

You buy a meal ticket at the ticket machine by the entrance inside the restaurant. The side menu item gyumeshi (beef rice bowl) is especially popular as a companion to the udon.

The menu item "Gyu-meshi" refers to a beef Rice bowl. Soft simmered thin slices of beef belly are served over rice.

The beef is seasoned with a sweet and savory mix of sugar and soy sauce, and it goes perfectly with the rice. There is also a mini-sized "Gyu-meshi" that you can pair with udon.

They offer a wide variety of udon. A key feature is the umami-rich dashi made from several ingredients such as katsuobushi (bonito flakes) and kombu kelp.

The noodles are also known for their pleasantly chewy texture and good taste. If you want to fully enjoy the aroma and umami of the dashi, which is made without chemical seasonings, the hot udon comes recommended.

The nikusui (meat soup) had a nice rich dashi flavor. The meat was so good! It went perfectly with yuzu kosho (yuzu pepper paste)!! The onion added a nice accent, and the tofu was good too. It was my first time trying nikusui, but it really made me want udon lol. And then I went wild and mixed in a nikumeshi (meat rice bowl) lol. But don't underestimate it, this gyumeshi (beef rice bowl) was so good! The beef was tender and melted in my mouth!

My favorite udon shop♡ The glossy, springy chewy udon is beautiful and super delicious ❤️ Shikisai bukkake (colorful bukkake udon) 1750円 comes with shrimp tempura, chicken tempura, 2 kinds of vegetable tempura, soft-boiled egg tempura, and meat. It’s filling, luxurious, and totally Manzoku. Weekday only (highly〜recommended) ❤️ D Set 450円. The mini gyu-meshi (beef rice bowl) was so insanely good it shocked me. The sweet and savory meat makes gyu-meshi the perfect match with rice. It was so good I could’ve gone for a large too

I went there for lunch! I had the signature Romantei Nishiki-ju, which lets you enjoy two kinds: beef steak and niku-meshi (meat rice bowl). The niku-meshi had a slightly sweet flavor that really soaked into the onions and tasted great, and the beef steak had a nice kick of pepper that went perfectly with the rice! Next time I want to try the Outside skirt or the kalbi-jyu (short rib rice box)!

I ordered the Osaka Niku Meshi Zen for JPY1309 (Tax Included). The meat was super tender and really good. The seasoning was light. It tasted great with sansho (Japanese pepper) sprinkled on top. I could also enjoy it as ochazuke (rice with tea or broth), which was nice for changing up the flavor.

Harijyu Curry Shop

Hari Ju Curry Shop is run by Hari Ju, a beef specialty restaurant founded in 1919 with a history of more than 100 years. It is near Namba Station, at the entrance to the Dotonbori Shotengai (Dotonbori shopping street).

The casual interior has table seating only. It gets crowded at lunch time, so it seems best to visit at an off-peak hour.

The beef used in the cooking is only Domestic Kuroge Wagyu (Japanese Black beef). They buy whole cattle and age the meat before cooking it.

The restaurant's gyudon (beef Rice bowl) is a menu item called "Beef One." It features beef simmered until tender and combined with beaten egg, creating a flavor that really brings out the quality of the ingredients.

The "Sukiyaki Rice bowl" is carefully seasoned with broth made from Wagyu bones and a special warishita (sukiyaki sauce), making it a popular bowl packed with the restaurant's care and attention.

At the adjacent Honten, "Harijyu," you can also enjoy dishes like "sukiyaki," but this seems to be a handy spot when you want to enjoy a meal on your own without any fuss.

Even though it was around 14:00, the restaurant was almost full. I went ahead and ordered the recommended beef Rice bowl, though the curry also looked good. At first glance, the beef Rice bowl looked like a small portion, but it was actually quite filling, and the pickles nicely refreshed my palate. It was incredibly delicious.

・Beef One
To put it simply, it’s a gyudon (beef rice bowl) with egg mixed in. I had it about 20 years ago, and it hasn’t changed at all since then. It’s fairly filling, with plenty of both beef and egg, and since the quality of the meat is good, the first bite especially makes you go, oh! It was delicious.

Shokujidokoro Heso

Shokujidokoro Heso is a diner centered on meat dishes made with top grade Wagyu, especially "Kobe Beef." It is located on the basement level of a building right by Exit 7 of Osaka Tenmangu Station.

Even though it is in a modern building, the interior has the feel of an old kominka (traditional Japanese house). There are only 10 counter seats in total, and it is open only at lunchtime.

The meat they use is said to be Wagyu with fat that sits light, rich lean meat, and that fragrant Wagyu aroma.

The "Kobe Gyu-don (Kobe Beef Rice bowl)" is a beef Rice bowl made with 100% "Kobe Beef." It is simmered in broth made from kombu kelp and bonito flakes, then seasoned with fragrant flavorings.

They also offer Rice bowls where you can enjoy two major branded beefs, Kobe beef and Matsusaka beef, at the same time, as well as a gyudon Rice bowl topped with seared tongue.

This restaurant is popular for letting you enjoy the rich flavor of luxurious Wagyu in the easygoing style of a Rice bowl.

Since I came all the way to Osaka, I wanted to eat something good, and this place was easy to find, which was great. The gyudon (beef Rice bowl) was so incredibly delicious that I regretted not ordering the largest size lol. The owner was wonderful, thank you very much. The restaurant also had a calm atmosphere and was a lovely space.

・Kobe Beef Rice bowl & whole grilled Wagyu Beef Tongue
It looked incredibly good, so I got the L size and added 2 slices of tongue. The sukiyaki-style warishita (sweet soy-based broth) had a rich, tasty flavor. The meat was tender, so it was easy to eat. Having 2 slices of whole grilled Wagyu Beef Tongue made a big impact. This luxury Combo of "Kobe Beef × Wagyu Beef Tongue" was the best.

Founded in Mie Prefecture in 1871 as a restaurant specializing in beef dishes, Kakiyasu serves dishes made with carefully managed high quality beef, prepared using techniques refined over its long history.

At the restaurant, they sell fresh meat, prepared dishes, and boxed meals, and you can also enjoy freshly made food at the attached 5-seat counter.

The eat-in space is at the back of the butcher section, with 5 counter seats. “Kuroge Wagyu (Japanese Black Wagyu) Beef Rice Box.” The thinly sliced meat is moist and tender. The sweet-savory sauce and rice make the perfect Combo. The rice portion is a bit small, but it is just right for eating while you shop.

The main focus is meat! It is a small place with 5 counter seats, and the menu is not very extensive. I had the kuroge Wagyu (Japanese Black Wagyu) gyu-suki-ju 1800円. It was seasoned with a sweet and savory flavor like sukiyaki and tasted great. Besides the meat, the tofu, fu (wheat gluten), negi (Japanese leek), thinly sliced konnyaku (yam cake), and gobo (burdock root) also had a nice sweet and savory flavor! The other menu items included a steak ju and a sukiyaki Gozen set.

Yoshinoya Shin-Umeda Shokudogai Ten

Yoshinoya Shin Umeda Shokudogai Ten is a restaurant on the first floor of Shin Umeda Shokudogai, located between Osaka Station and Umeda Station, and part of Yoshinoya, the gyudon (beef Rice bowl) chain founded in 1899 with restaurants across Japan.

In addition to counter seats that make it easy to drop in alone, it also has table seating that is perfect for groups and families.

Gyudon (beef Rice bowl) is made by coating beef and onions in a light sauce and serving them over rice. Because it is so simple, they are said to be particular about the ingredients.

The signature feature is the original sauce, made by aging well-balanced beef with a good mix of lean meat and fat, and sweet onions, with white wine, ginger, and other ingredients.

You can choose the portion size of the gyudon (beef Rice bowl) from small to extra extra large, and customize it with options like extra meat or extra onions.

There is also a wide range of toppings, including egg, cheese, green onions, and kimchi. You can also enjoy it as a set with miso soup, salad, and other sides in any combination you like.

Yoshinoya's gyudon (beef Rice bowl) is delicious in a way that makes you feel happy with every bite, as the sweet and savory sauce soaked in so well mixes perfectly with the rice. The tender beef and the good flavor of the onions stand out nicely, creating a simple yet never boring taste. It is served quickly, which makes it appealing that you can enjoy a satisfying bowl even when you are busy.

・Stamina Chotoku-mori Rice bowl
A regular gyudon (beef rice bowl) comes out quickly, but this one takes about 10 minutes. It is topped with two kinds of beef, regular beef and sweet-savory seasoned beef, and comes with extra rice, an egg, and garlic sauce for a huge portion w. This garlic sauce is insanely good, but if you add too much, the after-smell gets too strong, so it is best to adjust it little by little as you eat.

Tokyo Chikara Meshi Osaka Nipponbashi Ten

Tokyo Chikara Meshi Osaka Nipponbashi Ten is a gyudon (beef Rice bowl) restaurant that first opened in Tokyo in 2011. It is located about a 5-minute walk from Namba Station, next to the East Building of Osaka Takashimaya.

The restaurant has both counter and table seating. It stays open from morning until late at night, making it easy to stop by at any time.

While gyudon (beef Rice bowl) is usually made with simmered beef, this restaurant serves it by grilling the beef and placing it over rice.

Because they grill it only after an order comes in, people say it has a great aroma. They mix in sauce while grilling, and they also pour on a special sauce when they place it over the rice.

They also offer dishes like the "Premium Loin Yaki Beef Rice bowl," made with tender, high quality loin, and the "Pork Loin Rice bowl," with grilled pork served over rice.

For those who want to enjoy the rice and meat separately, the Yakiniku set meal is recommended.

タピオカ放浪記

I ordered the original grilled beef Rice bowl (JPY750). It was a beef Rice bowl topped with thinly sliced beef seasoned with a slightly sweet Yakiniku sauce. I ordered the Regular size, and I was happy with the generous amount of meat. Something you could eat anytime, anywhere in the 2010s has now become much rarer, with far fewer restaurants, and that sense of rarity and nostalgia makes it taste even better.

The meat is piled on top so thickly that you can barely see the rice underneath. It is sliced quite thin, but the grilling gives it a nice, toasty flavor, and it is covered generously with a sweet and savory soy sauce based tare (sauce). The rice soaked with the sauce is filling too, and you just keep digging in. Unlike the simmered gyudon (beef Rice bowl) you get at typical beef bowl chains, this was a hearty bowl with real bite.

Matsuya Sakurabashi Ten

Matsuya Foods operates restaurants in a wide range of genres under the concept of wanting to be everyone's dining table. At the center of it is this restaurant, which mainly serves gyudon (beef Rice bowl).

This chain restaurant has locations across Japan, and this one, Matsuya Sakurabashi Ten, is about a 3-minute walk from Kitashinchi Station.

At the foot of Mt. Fuji, they have their own farm where they grow the vegetables used at the restaurant. They also use Special beef, and prepare it so that even though it is thinly sliced, it stays tender and takes on the flavor well.

The standard choice is the "gyu-meshi (beef rice bowl)." You can also choose the portion size.

It seems many people come here for breakfast as well. In the morning, you can get rice and miso soup with your choice of main dish at a good price.

The popular item is the Tokuasa Gyusara set meal, which serves the beef from the gyudon separately from the rice. The beef is tender and seasoned with a lightly sweet flavor, and it is said to go perfectly with the rice.

We sometimes get Matsuya gyudon (beef Rice bowl) delivered to the office, and I’ve started to feel that their meat tastes the best. Maybe the flavor soaks in the most? Depending on how you order, a gyudon shop can be a pretty healthy option, so I’m sure I’ll keep coming back to it.

Special Asagyu beef plate set meal (extra-large rice) JPY400-. This has already become my regular breakfast spot. A rice bowl-sized serving first thing in the morning leaves me totally full! Can this keep me going all day today? As usual, I added plenty of shichimi (Japanese seven-spice), and really dug into the extra-large rice with pickles, miso soup, beef plate, fresh vegetables, nori (seaweed), and a beni shoga (pickled red ginger) salad.

Nakau Umeda Higashi Ten

Founded in Osaka in 1969, Nakau is a fast food chain with locations across Japan, known for its main menu of Rice bowls and udon made with Kansai-style dashi broth.

Nakau Umeda Higashi Ten is about a 4-minute walk from Osaka-Umeda Station and is Open 24 hours.

The meat used in the gyusuki Rice bowl is limited to cuts that meet the company's own safety standards. It has a good balance of lean meat and fat, and they even change the slice thickness depending on the cut.

They are also particular about the rice, choosing varieties that pair well with sauces for gyudon (beef rice bowl) and similar dishes.

The photo shows the "oyako-don (chicken and egg rice bowl)," a dish made by simmering chicken in a special dashi broth, combining it with egg, and serving it over rice.

The carefully selected eggs come from chickens raised on special feed. Their deep color and rich umami stand out, and you can also add them to a gyu-don (beef rice bowl) for an extra charge.

I ordered a warm egg gyusuki Rice bowl with salad and miso soup (I got a small serving of rice〜), and it came out right away! So fast! It’s nice that you can add the warm egg whenever you like later on☺️First, just as it is… then with some shichimi on the table, and finally with the warm egg on top… I enjoyed changing up the flavor in 3 stages, munch munch✨️After all, the warm egg version was the best. It was really good!

A classic lunch set that is cheap, quick, and tasty. These days, takeout also seems to be doing very well. The gyudon (beef Rice bowl) looks very simple, but you get plenty of sweet and savory beef. I kept thinking a small udon might be the perfect choice instead of soup, yet I ended up drinking every last drop of the broth. I guess that light flavor is something unique to Kansai.

Sukiya Chayamachi Ten

This is the Chayamachi restaurant of "Sukiya," a chain with restaurants nationwide that mainly serves gyudon (beef Rice bowl). It is located about a 3-minute walk from Osaka-Umeda Station, along Kita-Umeda-dori.

There are counter seats and table seats, and it seems easy for families to use as well.

They use Domestic rice and carefully selected beef from places such as the U.S. and Australia. This restaurant pays close attention not only to its ingredients but also to hygiene.

The main dish, Gyudon (beef Rice bowl), features beef and onions simmered in a slightly sweet sauce and served over rice with extra sauce.

For the gyudon (beef Rice bowl), you can choose from a mini size up to a "mega" size that is about three times the regular portion. For an extra charge, you can also add more beef with "oi-gyu (extra beef)".

Even the Rice bowl menu alone offers plenty of variety, and they also have curry and menu items for kids.

yvrnq

Perfect for a quick meal on your own! The place is small, but it has table seating, so there is some space between you and the next person, which feels reassuring. Among beef Rice bowl chains, I rather like Sukiya! The mini size is a good deal, which I really appreciate!

The curry before was a little spicy, but the current one is sweet. It is good curry. You can choose from various toppings, and it is quite filling. One nice point about Sukiya is that you can change the size. As is, it is mild, but it seems you can add the included sauce to make it spicy and adjust the heat level.
