Aichi Prefecture [Nagoya City]: Restaurants Where You Can Enjoy Udon

Hoshigaoka Seimenjo Hisayaodori Ten

Hoshigaoka Seimenjo Hisayaodori Ten is an udon restaurant in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, built around the concept of making kishimen (flat udon noodles) part of everyday life and serving Nagoya specialties.

The polished interior has counter seats, table seats, and a standing eating area, and its appeal is the kind of atmosphere that makes it easy to drop in alone for a quick meal.

The Most Popular dish, "Tamon," is a stylish looking bowl topped with sudachi (Japanese citrus).

The smooth, slippery kishimen (flat wheat noodles) go well with the flavor of the white dashi broth, and once you try it, you may get hooked.

The assorted miso oden is also a popular menu item, and many people order it together with kishimen (flat wheat noodles).

The rich flavor unique to hatcho miso (dark red soybean miso) soaks into the ingredients, making it a perfect match for drinks! They also offer Nagoya local favorites such as dote-ni (miso simmered beef tendon) and miso katsu (pork cutlet with miso sauce).

名古屋めし攻略

I ordered the most popular "Tamon," and the combination of shirodashi (light Japanese soup stock) and sudachi (Japanese citrus) felt refreshingly new. I honestly was not sure at first, but the depth of the broth and the fresh tartness of the sudachi matched perfectly, and it was really good.

まぶ グルメ(京都メイン)

I had chilled tanuki kishimen (flat udon-like noodles) with chikuwa tempura and maitake (hen-of-the-woods mushroom) tempura. The tempura was very crisp and tasty! The maitake in particular had a great aroma, and its rich flavor spread across my mouth when I ate it. The kishimen was very light, and it went well with the fried tofu too.

Yamacho Yasaka Honmachi-dori

Yamacho Yasaka Honmachi-dori is a restaurant where you can enjoy additive-free dashi (Japanese soup stock) udon, tempura, and obanzai (Kyoto-style home cooking), created by a katsuobushi (dried bonito flakes) wholesaler.

The interior has a calm feel, centered around white wood. Soft-toned lighting is said to create a relaxing space where you can unwind.

The specialty at this restaurant is the Oban Kitsune (deep-fried tofu) udon, topped with a huge piece of aburaage (deep-fried tofu) that covers the whole bowl.

The additive-free dashi stock and tare made with tamari soy sauce are said to have a comforting flavor that really hits the spot. The aburaage is fluffy and sweet, and so good you will not be able to stop eating it.

The “Tomato Spice Chicken Tempura Curry Udon” is a bowl where the aroma of spices opens up first, followed by layers of tomato tang and the umami of dashi (Japanese soup stock).

The noodles go down smooth and have just the right chew, and people say they pair well with the soup and taste great. The restaurant’s signature chicken tempura is large and very filling.

・Sesame-Scented Japanese Dashi Tantan Udon
The fragrant aroma of sesame rises the moment it arrives, and it really gets your appetite going. One sip, and you get the mellow richness of sesame and the savory depth of wa-dashi (Japanese soup stock) in a gentle, comforting flavor. The spice level is mild and well balanced, so it stays enjoyable to the last bite. It was a very satisfying bowl.

The tempura was excellent, and I was especially surprised by how big the mushroom tempura was! Also, the yakuzen curry udon (herbal curry udon) had a rich dashi flavor and was unbelievably good—I finished every last drop of the soup!

Takiya

Takiya in Nagoya, Aichi, has two sides: a curry udon specialty shop during the day and a reservation-only Yakiniku restaurant at night.

The lively interior features a wood-grain based design. In addition to counter and table seating, it also offers zashiki (tatami seating).

At lunchtime, you can enjoy a wide variety of curry udon (curry noodles).

This is the "menchi-katsu (Japanese minced meat cutlet) curry udon." The menchi-katsu served on the side has a crispy coating, and it is said to taste great whether you eat it on its own or together with the udon.

The winter-only Age Mochi Curry Udon has many fans.

This bowl has an excellent balance of crispy, fragrant fried mochi rice cake and chewy udon noodles. The carefully made curry broth coats everything well, and people say it is addictive.

・Curry Udon with Chashu (braised pork)
The udon has a nice chewy texture. The chashu is incredibly tender and very delicious. As other reviewers have also written, this chashu is something you should try at least once. It is really good.

・Pork curry udon
The mild curry sauce went so well with the chewy udon lol. I wanted to order rice too, but I’m on a diet, so I held back and stuck with the A la carte dish. The piping hot curry udon was really good. I finished it all in one go.

Tamagawa Toyohashi Hirokoji Honten

This is the restaurant’s specialty, Toyohashi curry udon.

Rice and tororo (grated yam) are hidden at the bottom of the bowl, giving it a two-layer structure. You can enjoy both curry udon and curry rice at the same time, and it is very filling. They also offer a wide range of toppings, including fried shrimp and Kara-age.

You can also pair the standard Toyohashi curry udon (curried udon noodles from Toyohashi) with a mini-size tempura shrimp Rice bowl or katsudon (pork cutlet Rice bowl).

In the pictured kaisendon (seafood Rice bowl), you can enjoy five kinds of seafood, including very fresh tuna, salmon, and amaebi (sweet shrimp).

Toyohashi Curry Udon is curry udon with Toyohashi quail eggs and tororo gohan (grated yam rice) at the bottom. It also comes by default with chicken cutlet, fried eggplant, and sweet potato, so it is packed with toppings! When you lift the noodles from the piping hot soup, you will see they are not thick noodles like Nagoya curry udon. They are what you would call regular udon noodles, but they are tasty in their own way!

• dote-ni (miso-stewed offal)
A dote-ni with motsu (offal), konnyaku (firm yam cake), liver, daikon radish, and more. It is served in an iron pot, so it stays warm even as time passes. The miso seasoning is just right.

A whole onion tempura is one of the most popular highlights. It goes well with the slightly sweet broth and the smooth, easy to slurp udon, and people say they can finish it in no time. Some reviews even say they wished they had ordered a Large size of the noodles.

Not only udon, but the set meal menu is also extensive.

The "Kara-age Fried Shrimp set meal" is a dish that comes with an assortment of three pieces of Kara-age and fried shrimp coated in a crispy batter. It also comes with mini udon as a set, making it very filling.

All of the lunch sets were pretty filling, so I went with A la carte orders instead! I got chiku-ten udon (udon with fried fish cake tempura) and a tiger prawn tempura A la carte dish! You can help yourself to 3 kinds of side dishes, but I finished them all before the udon arrived. The udon had a really nice broth, and the chikuwa tempura was a good size too✨

I had tori-ten (chicken tempura) zaru udon. The tori-ten was crispy, and the chicken inside was light, tender, and very tasty. Dipping that tori-ten into the udon sauce and eating it with the udon made for a great harmony of the udon’s chewy texture, the tori-ten’s crisp texture, and the flavor of the dipping sauce.
