[Tokyo's Toshima and Bunkyo Wards] Popular Places for Purin (Japanese pudding)

Jika Baisen Coffee Mijinko

Jika Baisen Coffee Mijinko is a coffee specialty shop built around the concept of enjoying high quality coffee in a tasteful space. The shop also serves sweets that pair well with coffee.

It is located along Shimizuzaka, which connects Yushima Tenjin and Yushima Seido in Bunkyo City. The interior has a calm atmosphere with dark brown as the main tone, making it a place where you can relax and take your time.

One of the signature sweets is the purin (custard pudding). It has the sweetness and aroma of custard cream, and its soft, pleasantly chewy texture is said to be a highlight.

The surface is crisp from caramelization, and it is enjoyed with a coffee flavored caramel sauce. The generously sized purin stacked in two layers is also popular.

Another specialty is the Pancake, which is carefully cooked over time on a copper Teppan-yaki griddle after each order comes in. Like the pudding, it is made thick and round.

The weekday-only set with pudding and Pancake is also popular. It is said to go well with slightly bitter coffee.

キヨキヨヨキヨキ

I had the two-layer pudding and an iced coffee. This house-made pudding has a rich eggy taste and custard flavor, with a dense, springy texture that feels new. The surface is caramelized, and it is finished with the restaurant's original coffee caramel poured over the top. Since it comes in two layers, I enjoyed one without the caramel and one with it. Thank you for a lovely time.

馬場四丁目

This thick Pancake takes 20 minutes to cook. The surface, cooked on a copper griddle, looks great and has an evenly crisp texture. It is mildly sweet even without maple syrup, but in the end it tasted better with plenty poured on. By default, it comes as a stack of two, so it is quite filling. The coffee in the set was bitter and good.

SUNNYDAYSpuddingcafe

SUNNYDAYSpuddingcafe is a pudding specialty shop in Toshima City, Tokyo, near the Ikebukuro Nichome bus stop. The concept is to create a shop where people can feel relaxed even in the middle of the city's hustle and bustle.

The first floor mainly focuses on Takeout sales, the second floor has a cafe space, and the third floor has rooftop terrace seating.

They serve house-made purin (Japanese custard pudding) made with carefully selected ingredients, and they also offer seasonal limited-edition purin. This shop is recommended for purin lovers.

The "Retoro Purin" is known for its rich flavor and slightly firm texture, made to bring to mind the classic old-fashioned taste. It is said to pair well with the rich caramel sauce.

The "white pudding" made with eggs from chickens raised on rice stands out for its white color and light taste. You can enjoy it with raspberry sauce.

In spring, sakura-colored puddings appear, and in winter, chocolate-colored puddings also make an appearance. It also sounds fun to get some for Takeout and compare the flavors.

ayaka9119

The [Retro Purin (caramel sauce)] has a texture that is not overly smooth, with a light gentle wobble. It goes well with the slightly bitter caramel sauce, giving it a simple but classic good taste. It also looks cute, and it was a satisfying sweet that made for a relaxing cafe time.

The firm white pudding is made with eggs from chickens raised on rice feed, so it has a very pale color, and from the first bite a milky flavor gently spreads across your palate! The sweetness is mild with a clean finish, and while it is firm, it does not feel heavy, with a lightness more like a high quality snack than a dessert! In contrast, the retro pudding is the classic choice!

Kissa Satera

Kissa Satera is a cafe that opened in 2020 after renovating a kissaten (traditional Japanese coffee shop) that had been in business for 48 years. It is about a 7-minute walk up Miyamasuzaka from Shibuya Station.

The interior is retro and calm, as if time has gone back to around 1970. It has just the right atmosphere for quietly spending time alone.

The popular pudding is rich yet gently sweet, made with eggs plus cream cheese and condensed milk. It is baked in a large mold, with a fragrant surface and a smooth inside.

Many people also come here for this pudding, made with expertly judged baking.

They also sometimes offer Special puddings made to match the season, with flavors like chocolate, matcha (powdered green tea), and sakura (cherry blossom). The puddings are available only until the day’s baked batch sells out, so visiting early is recommended.

They brew each cup of coffee by hand drip.

トムごはん

I ordered pudding and a dark roast blend coffee. You could choose from four types of coffee beans. The pudding had a dense texture, and its just-right sweetness made it really addictive. The coffee had no off flavors, and it felt like a light, easy-to-drink cup.

Inside, time seemed to pass gently, and it was a calm cafe that made me forget the bustle of Shibuya. I ordered a cold brew iced coffee and pudding. The pudding, made with a base of cream cheese and condensed milk, was very rich and really delicious. I was able to relax and take my time, forgetting about the hour. Both the pudding and the coffee were very good.

Many people get pudding for Takeout, but there is also a compact eat-in space available.

The signature "Mirano Purin (Milan pudding)" is based on a recipe the chef inherited from a mentor in Italy, with changes made to suit Japanese tastes.

The pudding stands out for its high density, staying in shape even when sliced thin and firm enough to stand on its own. Made with Special selected ingredients, it is said to have a rich, cheesecake-like depth and a creamy taste.

They offer puddings in different flavors such as matcha (green tea), chocolate, and orange, making them perfect as souvenirs.

・Milano pudding
From the first bite, its dense, tightly packed texture stands out, richer than a typical pudding. It has a richness that brings cheesecake to mind. The mouthfeel is very creamy, while the pudding itself is only mildly sweet. The caramel has a pleasant touch of bitterness, and it balances well with the rich pudding.

Source:su_ta's review

いこかしつび

It is quite firm, yet fine-textured and smooth. Rich and creamy. Both the mouthfeel and flavor are excellent. The rum raisin had a nice flavor with a slight kick of liqueur. The hazelnut was the richest and had the least drip. The lemon was refreshing and a unique variation. The plain is said to have a vanilla flavor, but it tasted rich like rare cheesecake, with a slight tang.

It’s the perfect space for a day when you want to relax. The pudding was quite firm, with a simple taste that let the quality of the ingredients come through. It wasn’t too sweet, just right, and it went really well with the calm atmosphere. Overall, it was a quiet and comfortable cafe that made me want to stay a while ☕️

susu2020

I ordered the pudding. I also ordered an iced cafe au lait separately. The pudding had a rich eggy taste, just the right firmness, and a bitter style caramel. The iced cafe au lait had a clean, sharp taste. ※The spacious terrace seating feels open and relaxing, so I recommend it! They also sell stylish雑貨, items, and apparel.

Purin Kenkyujo Ginza Ten

Purin Kenkyujo (Pudding Lab) Ginza Ten is a restaurant by Purin Kenkyujo (Pudding Lab), which makes pudding that lets you fully enjoy the natural taste of eggs. It started with online sales, and in 2023 opened a physical restaurant near Ginza Station.

It is located on the first floor of Exitmelsa, a shopping center. You can also eat in at the shared space.

They use Special ingredients such as free-range eggs from Kanagawa Prefecture and tensai granulated sugar (beet granulated sugar), which contains almost no impurities.

The “Shin Purin (True Pudding)” comes in two types, “smooth” and “firm.” You can enjoy the difference in texture through the simple flavor of the pudding.

They also have a pudding parfait made with pudding and “100% Purin Soft,” which is simply pudding piped at -8 degrees into a soft serve-like texture.

Another feature is that you can choose from more than 10 kinds of sauces. It gets good reviews because you can pour on the sauce from a tube and enjoy changing up the flavor.

What I ordered this time was the hugely impressive "350% Purin Parfait." The name already sounds like no ordinary dessert, but the moment it arrived, I understood why. The purin (custard pudding), the star of the show, has incredible presence. One bite in, and although it is firmly set, it feels surprisingly creamy on the tongue.

雪だるま*

The ice dessert really tasted like purin (custard pudding) too, but it was not overly sweet and was very good. There were also many kinds of syrup for changing up the flavor, so it was fun to choose. I went with raspberry and mango. It was light and easy to eat, and I finished it in no time. It was cute that it came in a case shaped like a paint palette.

[Tokyo's Sumida and Taito Wards] Popular Shops for Purin (custard pudding)

akim'p

akim'p is a shop about a 5-minute walk south of Oshiage Station, near Tokyo Skytree. Its concept is to give many of the people who come to Akimp a moment of peace.

The bright interior is based on white and natural wood tones. The main offerings are pudding and tea.

The pudding was created after the owner spent months experimenting and refining it. Its standout feature is its square, cube-like shape.

The "Caramel Pudding" is topped with a rich, slightly bitter caramel sauce. The balance between the sweet pudding and the bitter sauce is said to be just right.

The “brulee purin (crème brûlée pudding)” is an eat-in only menu item. Right in front of you, they torch the coarse sugar sprinkled on top of the pudding and finish it with a crisp caramelized crust.

It has a fun, entertaining touch, the sweet aroma fills the air, and cracking the crisp top before eating is part of the appeal.

ホーナン

This pudding really makes a great picture. Personally, the most memorable part is the caramel sauce poured over it as it runs down the sides, and the way the rich caramel reflects the light around it.

ナナミカン

I heard they had great pudding, so I came to akim'p in Oshiage. I ordered one each of their signature brûlée and caramel. The brûlée really lives up to its name as the signature item! It was insanely good. They torch it right in front of you. The caramel is authentic, with a caramel sauce that has a slight bitterness.

まつり✰Matsuri

When you open the bottle, the pudding fills it all the way to the top. As the word "silk" suggests, it has a smooth texture on the tongue. Just one bite of the pudding is enough to tell they probably use really good eggs♡ It is rich and delicious

I decided to buy one Silk Purin (silky pudding), which is also in the shop's name.・Premium Silk Purin (JPY 690)You can enjoy the rich taste of brand eggs and the gentle sweetness of fresh cream from Hokkaido. The texture is right in the middle, neither too firm nor too soft. The container is also cute, and I thought it would make a great gift for someone special♪

[Suginami, Tokyo] Shops Famous for Pudding

Kissa coniwa

Kissa coniwa is a coffee shop in Suginami City, Tokyo, near the south exit of Nishi-Ogikubo Station. The shop is a renovated former clock store from around the 1960s.

With its antique feel, the stylish and calm interior lets you relax in slightly low, old fashioned chairs.

There are several food menu items and dessert options. One of the desserts is pudding.

The pudding has a rich egg flavor. Another nice touch is the beautifully arranged topping of seasonal fruits.

The dessert "Kuroi Chiizukeeki (Black Cheesecake)" is also popular. It is said to be a cheesecake with a rich cocoa flavor.

Some people visit with friends and compare both the pudding and the cheesecake.

みょんです

It feels exactly like a vis-kei purin (visual kei-style pudding). This is the kind of dessert that makes you want to take a photo. But it is not just about the looks. The pudding is not as firm as expected, and it has a smooth texture on the tongue. You can really taste the rich eggy sweetness. It seems the fruit topping changes with the season. The "American cherries" are light and fresh, and they bring out the pudding’s richness and sweetness.

Odekake

I had the pudding, and my friend chose the black cheesecake. The pudding was firm and not too sweet. They said the cheesecake was also very good. The interior is a very lovely and relaxing space. I’d like to visit again.

[Machida, Tokyo] Shops Famous for Pudding

The CAFE Machida

"The CAFE Machida" is a cafe near Machida City in Tokyo, located along Park Avenue, a cobblestone promenade. It is on the second floor of a modern building constructed on the former site of a coffee shop that opened in 1958.

It has an "OLD & NEW" theme, blending a traditional kissaten (Japanese-style coffee shop) with a new cafe style.

The antique interior, designed with reclaimed wood, has a calm feel. It seems to have table seating and sofa seating as well.

The popular item is the "Classic Kissaten (traditional Japanese coffeehouse) Pudding," made with eggs from a poultry farm in Ebina, Kanagawa Prefecture. It is said to be mildly sweet, with a good balance between the bitter sauce and sweet cream.

The cafe also offers "Kissa Purin Toast" only during Breakfast hours. It is a dish with purin (custard pudding) on top of a thin slice of toast.

It is said to taste like fragrant toast paired with rich custard cream.

fuNa

The pudding and cream are in a 1:1 ratio. The cream is not too heavy. The pudding also has a gentle flavor. And above all, the caramel sauce is delicious. I really love this flavor. It is sweet, but also nicely toasted. I cannot stop eating it. I wish they would pour a lot more of this on top. I wonder if what is sprinkled on top is crushed coffee beans. That adds a really nice accent too.

rreena

I hadn’t been to Machida (an area in Tokyo) much, and I had the impression it was full of chain stores, but in the middle of that I found a stylish coffee shop with a great presence! lol. The food was tasty too, and the Napolitan (Japanese ketchup pasta) potatoes felt like something so obvious yet surprisingly hard to find, and the chocolate latte with a hint of rum was also delicious! Of course, their signature purin (Japanese custard pudding) was great too~~
