Sakagami Club

Sakagami Club, about a 6-minute walk from Osaka Metro Higashi-Umeda Station, is a karaoke izakaya known for its good gyoza (dumplings) and yakitori (grilled chicken skewers). There are also Part 2 and Part 3 restaurants nearby in the Umeda area.

Inside, there are 22 seats in total, with 14 counter seats and 8 table seats.

The yaki-gyoza (pan-fried dumplings), wrapped by hand in the restaurant, have a bold flavor even though they do not use garlic. That is because they are packed with plenty of ginger.

These dumplings are said to taste great even without any dipping sauce. Their nicely browned surface really whets the appetite.

The "soup gyoza (dumplings)" comes in a choice of 3 different flavors. In addition to the bright red mala flavor, they also serve egg and garlic chive soup.

Another popular item here alongside the gyoza is "TWO DOWN." This dish features chicken thigh simmered with butter and spices. Squeeze some lemon over it before eating.

A small, lively spot in Nishitenma. The pan-fried gyoza are a little different from the rest! They have the fresh flavor of ginger and the natural sweetness of the filling. They are really tasty, and your drinks just keep going down.

The atmosphere of the restaurant is great, and best of all, the staff keep smiling the whole time and come over right away whenever your drink runs out or your plate is empty. Of course the food tastes good, but when a restaurant also has great service, it really makes the whole meal feel good and makes you want to come back again and again.

Hong Kong Kaisen Yamucha Ro Breeze Breeze, located on the 6th floor of BREEZE BREEZE, is a Chinese restaurant in a commercial complex, about a 3-minute walk from Umeda Station on Osaka Metro. You can enjoy authentic seafood dishes and Hong Kong dim sum.

Along with the classic pan-fried gyoza, they also recommend "sui-gyoza (boiled dumplings)," which are commonly eaten in China, as well as various xiaolongbao.

Gyoza Hot Pot A-chan Kitashinchi

Gyoza Nabe A-chan Kitashinchi, about a 5-minute walk from JR Kitashinchi Station, is a popular restaurant known for its gyoza no nabe (dumpling Hot Pot), which many people order not only in the cold season but also in the hot season.

In addition to Sunken kotatsu seating where you can take off your shoes and relax, the restaurant also has private rooms equipped with a TV and other amenities.

The gyoza filling uses a blend of domestically produced beef and ground pork made from Ukaji-buta (Okinawan pork). It is wrapped in gyoza skin that is said to resist tearing.

For the "A-chan Gyoza Hot Pot," you can choose from a white salt-based soup, a red soup blended with house-made chili sauce, or a curry soup based on Japanese dashi broth.

If you can’t decide which soup to get, try ordering the “Half & Half Gyoza Hot Pot.” Since the pot has a divider in it, you can slowly enjoy both flavors in one Hot Pot.

You can also add fresh gyoza to the regular Hot Pot set, and it’s also a good idea to finish with noodles.

The gyoza (dumplings) have a different feel from sui-gyoza (boiled dumplings), simmered bubbling away, but they still keep a nice shape, and rather than focusing on the wrapper, they have a strong presence from the filling. Since they do not use garlic, they tasted light yet still satisfying.

They are delicious even without any dipping sauce. The gyoza (dumplings) have a real punch. The chashu (braised pork) is also recommended. This is the kind of place that makes you want rice even when you're drinking alcohol. Beer without foam gives you the same amount as regular beer, so you get a better deal since there’s no foam!

Stand Shan Osaka Kitashinchi Champagne & GYOZA BAR

Stand Shan Shoku Osaka Kitashinchi Champagne & GYOZA BAR is a restaurant with the unusual pairing of champagne and gyoza (dumplings). The idea came from a French pork dish.

Rather than standing room only, it has counter seats with chairs. It is a 2-minute walk from JR Kitashinchi Station.

These are French-style gyoza (dumplings) served with truffle oil and salt. The basic "Shanshoku Gyoza" is full of sweetness thanks to the amber-browned sauteed onions and cabbage.

Not only can you choose whether or not to include garlic, but they also seem to make healthy meat-free gyoza.

In addition to Mumm Cordon Rouge, which is designated as the house champagne, they offer 4 to 6 kinds of champagne by the glass every day.

If you know your champagne, you can pick a bottle you like from about 30 kinds of bottled champagne, or enjoy wine by the glass or beer as well.

Houton

Houton is about a 5-minute walk from JR Kitashinchi Station and serves a wide variety of gyoza (dumplings). The noren (traditional shop curtain) at the restaurant says, "Naniwa no Hitokuchi Gyoza."

One unusual dish to look out for is the Kyo-fu yuba gyoza (Kyoto-style tofu skin dumplings). Instead of dumpling wrappers, they use yuba (tofu skin), so the texture is on the softer side. It is said to be eaten dipped in grated daikon ponzu.

They also offer a wide range of gyoza variations, including ones with shrimp, ones made with chicken wings, and rich cheese-flavored ones.

Takigyoza Kawasoe

Takigyoza Kawazoe, a 5-minute walk from JR Osaka Station, serves its signature dish made not as the usual pan-fried, deep-fried, or boiled gyoza, but finished with the technique of taki (simmering).

This taishu izakaya (casual Japanese pub) has a somewhat nostalgic feel. It is an easy spot to drop by after work.

For "taki-gyoza (dumplings simmered in soup)," the dumplings are cooked in soup. As a result, the flavor soaks into the dumpling wrappers, while the tasty juices from the filling also seep into the soup.

They offer "shiro-taki gyoza (white simmered dumplings)" with a rich tori paitan (creamy chicken broth), as well as a red mala flavor and a black Japanese style squid ink curry flavor.

To finish the taki-gyoza (boiled dumplings), you can add noodles for an extra charge. Combine the noodles with the soup filled with the dumplings' savory flavor, and it turns into chicken paitan (rich chicken broth) ramen.

Besides adding extra gyoza as A la carte, you can also finish it as zosui (rice porridge) or risotto, which is another reason people like that they can enjoy it right to the very end.

The atmosphere inside is lively. The restaurant is bustling, with a casual vibe that makes it easy to enjoy gyoza (dumplings). It was full, and I saw several groups without reservations get turned away. I’ll make a reservation again next time I go.

Naniwa Hitokuchi Gyoza ChaoChao Umeda Honten

Naniwa Hitokuchi Gyoza Chao Chao Umeda Honten is about a 2-minute walk from Hankyu Railway Umeda Station and is known for its tasty gyoza (Japanese dumplings) made with an ultra-thin 0.9mm wrapper.

Takeout is available, which makes it easy to enjoy these bite-sized gyoza at home. There are 15 seats in total, all at the counter.

Chao Chao Gyoza uses thin wrappers and finishes them with its original fuku-zutsumi (lucky wrap) technique. They use a company secret water mixture for grilling and cook them with a dedicated machine.

This wrapping method lets excess fat escape while keeping only the good flavor. The ratio of wrapper to filling is 2 to 8.

In addition to the "puripuri ebi gyoza (plump shrimp dumplings)," which you can add one piece at a time, they also serve "tori cheese gyoza (chicken and cheese dumplings)," which you can choose to have either grilled or deep-fried.

They also offer a wide variety of gyoza, including options like keema curry and mala flavor. It is hard to decide which ones to get.

• Chao Chao Gyoza (dumplings)
Everything on the menu looked tempting, but I decided to start with their signature item. The crisp lacy skirt felt great to bite into, and the filling was packed with juices—these were the kind of outstanding gyoza you would expect from a specialty shop.

Crispy iron pan gyoza
a round shape with a solid crispy skirt. Fragrant and crispy, with juicy filling inside, and it goes great with kabosu kosho (kabosu citrus pepper) and vinegar soy sauce.

Classic menu items like edamame (young soybeans) and French fries are simple, but sometimes this is exactly what you want! The Teppan-yaki gyoza and cheese gyoza are served piping hot, with a good, comforting taste!
