Akebono

Akebono is a robata izakaya located about a 12-minute walk from Kushiro Station in the bustling Suehirocho district.

The retro interior catches the eye with its U-shaped counter and charcoal grill. The first floor has counter and table seating, and the second floor also has zashiki (tatami seating). It is said to be a lively place that is also well loved by locals.

The “Nakasatsunai jidori (free-range chicken) hanshin sumibi shinko-yaki” is this restaurant’s signature dish, grilled over charcoal until nicely fragrant.

Its savory seasoning has made it popular as a great match for drinks.

Bar-tetsu

The place is lively, but it doesn’t feel too noisy, so it’s comfortable even if you’re drinking alone. Considering the portion sizes, it also seems like a good spot to come with a group and share a variety of dishes. This is a place that balances Kushiro (a city in Hokkaido)-style seafood with the easygoing convenience of an izakaya. In the end, I had three draft beers, and what I meant to be a quick stop turned into a pretty satisfying visit.

The richness of madachi (cod milt) with ponzu sauce and fried madachi was outstanding. It was a dish that let you fully enjoy the best of madachi. The mochi-buta (glutinous-feed pork) pork chop was juicy with a satisfying bite, and it let the good flavor of the pork come through directly. For Japanese sake, they had a selection centered on dry styles, including the local Fukutsukasa, and it paired perfectly with madachi.

The grilled vegetable assortment was hearty and delicious. I also got to try hokke (Atka mackerel) sashimi, which is hard to find in the Kanto area. It was nice that they grilled everything for us. They also had a wide selection of local sake.

Enjoy seafood and venison from Doto (eastern Hokkaido) to the fullest. The hokke (Atka mackerel) is only a half portion, but it is still very filling. The venison has a nice bite, and the slightly sweet sauce makes it even better. The Fukutsukasa Junmaishu also comes poured right up to the brim, so I could not help ordering another. The service was good, the food came quickly, and I had a fun night.

I started with a beer, followed by 2 highballs. I ordered karei (flounder) sashimi, tsukimi tsukune (chicken meatballs with egg yolk), hiyayakko (chilled tofu), potato salad, and kawa tare kushi (chicken skin skewer with tare sauce). Each dish had good volume. The simmered appetizer they served was warm and had a comforting taste.

We ordered steamed oysters, herring sashimi, shimaebi (spot shrimp) sashimi, and tachi-pon (cod milt with ponzu sauce), and everything was fresh and delicious. The oysters were steamed just right. The tachi-pon was also very generous, and we were very satisfied. They did not have whale sashimi that day, but it seems they sometimes get it in depending on the day. They also had Yoichi whisky. The Japanese sake menu was also well stocked with local selections.

Everything was tasty, starting with the otoshi (small appetizer), but I was especially satisfied with the pork skewers, which were filling and delicious, and the grilled oysters were also large and satisfying to eat.

I fully enjoyed the flavors of Hokkaido, and the freshness really lived up to Hokkaido quality, so I was completely Manzoku!! It was my first time trying jaga butter (buttered potato) topped with ika no shiokara (salted fermented squid), and the fluffy potato matched perfectly with the butter and the sweet-salty flavor of the shiokara.

I wanted to enjoy a solo drink on my day off, and after trying a few places but finding them all fully booked, I was about to give up when I decided to stop in here. The otoshi (table appetizer) cabbage came with free refills, which was a nice touch. The food was also reasonably priced overall, and I was satisfied with Manzoku.

Today’s first stop for drinks is Kuromaru Kushiro Sakaemachi Koenmae Ten, where I’m making a toast. Today, I’m drinking solo. If you go in by 19:00, drinks are half price. All the time. So I went with beer. The otoshi (table appetizer) is cabbage. Salmon and tsukune (chicken meatballs). Ajillo.
