Popular izakaya (Japanese pubs) in Morioka, Iwate Prefecture
Photograph:231112ask
Banya Nagasawa, about a 10-minute walk from Morioka Station, is a charming izakaya pub that makes use of a Nanbu Magariya (traditional Iwate farmhouse) style building.
In a space filled with the warmth of a kominka (traditional old house), you can enjoy seafood mainly from the Sanriku coast and local Iwate sake.
Photograph:ymiddle
The signature Banya Hamayaki (fishermen's hut style seafood grill) lets you grill the seafood yourself over a shichirin (small charcoal grill).
Grilling hamaguri (hard clams), sazae (turban shells), shrimp, hotate (scallops), and tsubu (whelks) over charcoal brings out their toasty aroma and rich flavor, making it a dining experience that feels true to Morioka.
Photograph:ハワイアン・モンキー
The salt-grilled kichiji (channel rockfish) is a menu item with flaky flesh and impressively rich fat.
By finishing it with just salt, the natural flavor of the fish stands out, and it is well liked as a deeply flavorful dish right down to the meat around the bones.
ねこぐるめlol
This is a detached house Japanese-style izakaya with a great old-school atmosphere. There are counter and table seats. The seats with a robata-like atmosphere seem to be on the second floor. Shamisen music from Noh or Kabuki plays throughout the restaurant, adding to the atmosphere. The sashimi assortment includes 6 kinds. It focuses on white fish, and while everything is fresh, it is also carefully prepared, so this is one dish worth ordering when you visit.

むさしの森
From the outside, the building looked like a ryotei (traditional Japanese restaurant), so it felt a bit intimidating at first, but once I went in, it was an izakaya (Japanese pub). I ordered mainly seafood caught off the coast of Iwate, and my recommendations are the sashimi assortment and grilled seafood over a wire mesh. They also have a wide selection of alcoholic drinks. Beyond the seafood, the menu was extensive, and it was a place where you could really feel Iwate.

The restaurant seems to take pride in dishes featuring fresh fish shipped directly from fishing ports, and there were many dishes that looked delicious, including recommended items that gave a taste of Iwate. The large hotate (scallop) in the sashimi assortment seemed to be from Ofunato, and its thick, meaty flesh made it a sashimi dish that left a strong impression.

Sanmaime Sukegoro is an izakaya with 2 restaurants in Morioka and part of the Oizumi Foods Co., Ltd. group. It is very nice that all rooms are Private room with Sunken kotatsu seating. We were able to relax and enjoy drinks with coworkers at a nice pace. On this day, we ordered a la carte. More than the sashimi, the meat dishes like yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) and the assorted smoked meats were tasty.

The joy of having the food cooked right in front of you and eating it fresh off the grill. The meat was tender too, and I just couldn’t stop eating. The tempura was crispy, and the white fish was good!! To finish, grilled rice balls and sweets. Next time, I’d like to try the Beef Tongue. The staff had wonderful smiles too, and it made for a very fun drinking party!!

The staff recommended Shiogama oden (Japanese stew), and it really warmed me up, with an outstanding broth! According to the staff, the oden broth is a trade secret, and the winter-only Hot Pot also uses that oden broth as a base, with soy sauce or miso adding extra flavor! By all means! I’d love to try the Hot Pot next time I come!

You can choose your favorite oden (Japanese stew) ingredients and quantities, and get refills as many times as you like. The daikon radish was nicely soaked with flavor and tasted great. The satsuma-age (fried fish cake) was chewy and really tasty. The shumai was a bit underwhelming because the meat was too soft. Uma Kara-age to Izaka-meshi Miraizaka Morioka Ekimae Ten is a 2-minute walk from Morioka Station. This easy-to-drop-by izakaya in front of the station is popular for how convenient it is, with Kara-age at the center of the menu and a wide range of dishes to enjoy.
The interior is bright and casual, and it also supports touch-panel ordering.

The “Seiryu Wakadori (young chicken raised in clear streams) Bone-in Whole Thigh Glove-age (deep-fried in a glove-like shape)” is a striking dish with a bold bone-in presentation.
Its well-browned skin and the aroma of garlic really whet the appetite, and it is said to be crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. It is a signature dish with real presence.

The "hokahoka tokusei kamameshi (special piping hot kamameshi)" is known for being cooked right at the table after you order it.
The flavor of the chicken and the aroma of the dashi spread through the rice, and it is said to have a light, fluffy texture. Many people choose it as the final dish, and it is considered one item you can enjoy including the wait time.
三毛猫あんこ
Along with the tender, juicy chicken tsukune (chicken meatballs) and jumbo Kara-age, the tori-kamameshi (chicken pot rice) is so good you'll want a second helping, making it a highly recommended dish. It does take 25 minutes to cook, so ordering it first is the right move. The nice aroma while waiting was part of the fun too. In a convenient location right by the station, this is a great place you'll want to make your regular spot.

I tried the glove fried whole bone-in chicken thigh. Yep, this really is a glove! . It was a hugely impressive thigh. They deep-fry one whole thigh of seiryu wakadori (young chicken raised in clear stream water) as Kara-age. The meat is marinated in a secret sauce. Crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, just as promised! It’s really delicious.

The specialty "tokudai momo-yaki (extra large grilled chicken thigh)" is a bold dish served as a plate assortment rather than on skewers.
The nicely browned skin and the juicy flavor of the meat stand out, and it is also said to be appealing because the large cuts make it easy to share.

Seseri-yaki (grilled chicken neck) is known for its thick cut and springy texture.
The savory aroma of the char and its juicy bite come together, and the more you chew, the more flavor spreads across your palate. It is also satisfying in volume and is often chosen as a dish to enjoy with alcohol.

Actually, I came here last month too, but I like the large cuts and how the skewerless yakitori (grilled chicken) is cooked, and there were still menu items I wanted to try. It was Saturday night again this time, and the place already seemed popular, staying full the whole time with people waiting by the entrance too. I’m glad I made a reservation before coming!

We started by ordering the extra large grilled chicken thigh and Tatsu-chan-yaki, and with the sauce, both were really tasty〜♪Honestly, these two plates and some drinks were enough to fill us up lol They also have all kinds of grilled items, and since they come on plates rather than as skewers, they were easy to share, which I personally liked♡

The space blends Japanese taste with a modern touch, and it is said to have high ceilings, an open feel, and a calm atmosphere where you can relax.

The motsu-nabe (offal Hot Pot) is a popular menu item made with plump and springy Wagyu white offal.
It has a rich, savory taste and is said to pair well with alcohol. You can order it from two servings, and it is said to be a meal you can enjoy all the way to the finishing rice porridge.

The otoshi (small appetizer) is said to include roast beef and wine salt.
The savory roast beef gets a nice accent from the wine salt, and it is well liked as a dish that pairs well with the house brewed craft beer.

This had been a place I had wanted to visit for years, but when I finally made it there, the name of the restaurant had changed. I had a craft beer for my first drink, then from the second drink on, I switched to the counter-only All you can drink Japanese sake course! It was served in 50ml pours, and I started with Juyondai, then moved on to Japanese sake from Iwate and Miyagi, and before I knew it, the 90 minutes were up. The snacks were tasty too, and I would like to visit again.

A stylish spot for motsu-nabe (offal Hot Pot) and drinks. I enjoyed the motsu-nabe course. Along with the plump and juicy motsu-nabe, the course also included a salad, Outside skirt steak, and other varied dishes, all of them tasty. The craft beer and Japanese sake are served in a self-pour style. It is fun to try different kinds.

Iwate Prefecture [Kuji City] Popular Izakaya (Japanese-style pubs)
Photograph:kanTutsi
Hotateya Ando is an izakaya (Japanese pub) located a 2-minute walk from Kuji Station, across from Kuji Grand Hotel.
The small interior, with only counter seats and zashiki (tatami seating), has a quiet and calm atmosphere, and is described as a place where you can quietly enjoy a meal centered on scallop dishes.
Photograph:kanTutsi
The restaurant's signature "hamayaki (grilled in the shell)" scallops use Araumi Hotate scallops from Noda Village, Iwate Prefecture.
They are known for their plump texture and the flavor-packed juices that collect in the shell, making this a dish that lets you enjoy the quality of the ingredients in a simple way.
Photograph:鉄道王
The "kimo miso-yaki (grilled scallops with liver miso)" offers a rich taste, layering the sweet flavor of thick, meaty hotate (scallops) with the deep richness of the liver.
The firm texture unique to hotate raised in rough seas also stands out, and the dish is praised for combining elegance with depth.

On my first visit to Kuji-shi (Kuji City), I really wanted to eat seafood, so I tried this place for the first time. First of all, the craft beer is great, and they have all kinds of beer, so please give them a try. Next, every scallop dish was delicious and went perfectly with the beer. If I come to Kuji-shi again, I’ll definitely stop by.

にのみやきんちゃん
The overall number of menu items is small, but the lineup using Arakai hotate (scallops) is amazing. Raw, simmered, grilled, dressed, steamed... What a range. For beer, they serve Baeren Beer on draft, apparently the only place in Kuji City where you can drink it that way.

Iwate Prefecture [Kitakami] Popular Izakaya
Photograph:tabelog.com
CIMA BLU, a 10-minute walk from the west exit of Kitakami Station, is an izakaya centered on Hakata motsu-nabe (offal Hot Pot) and yakitori (grilled chicken skewers).
The interior, lined with bottles of Japanese sake and shochu on the shelves, is stylish and calm, making it a place where you can relax and enjoy your meal.

The "Wagyu Hakata motsu-nabe (offal hot pot) mizutaki" is a popular menu item in which beef offal is simmered with cabbage, garlic chives, and garlic.
The rich flavor that comes from the soft, bouncy offal soaks into the vegetables, and the dish is said to be enjoyed with a refreshing taste thanks to the special ponzu sauce.
Photograph:みっつみっつ3
The "Iwateken-san (from Iwate Prefecture) gekikara tsukune (spicy chicken meatball)" is a popular menu item known for its soft texture, made with chopped ao-togarashi (green chili peppers) kneaded into the mixture.
It is praised for the nice balance between its moderate heat and sweet-savory sauce, and another appealing point is how adding egg yolk and rice changes it into a milder flavor.

Thank you for accommodating an early 5:00 p.m. start. Both the food and the drinks were very good. I’ll stop by again.

We ordered the recommended shoyu motsu-nabe (soy sauce offal Hot Pot), a 6-skewer rolled skewer assortment, and a salad. I thought it might not be enough, but as we kept eating, we ended up Manpuku. The cabbage in the motsu-nabe especially had soaked up the broth and was full of flavor, so I just kept reaching for more! I couldn't decide between noodles or ojiya (rice porridge) to finish, but going with the ojiya was the right call♪ It was a great meal!

Popular izakaya (Japanese pubs) in Oshu, Iwate Prefecture

Toriden Mizusawa Ten, about 5 minutes by car from Mizusawa Station, is an izakaya where you can relax, complete with Private rooms.
The menu centers on yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) along with a range of creative dishes, and it also offers a full lineup of non-alcoholic cocktails. With its calm atmosphere, it is considered a place that offers many different ways to enjoy your time.
Photograph:hirok791
The tsukune (chicken meatballs) assortment is served warmed on a ceramic plate, as shown in the photo.
This thoughtful touch keeps it from getting cold easily, so you can enjoy it to the last bite, and it is said to be a dish with slightly bold seasoning that goes well with drinks.
The "Toriden Tori-zukushi Kamameshi (rice cooked in an iron pot with a full chicken assortment)" is a popular menu item, cooked from uncooked rice after each order is placed.
The rice is said to fully absorb the broth infused with the good flavor of the chicken, giving it a rich aroma. Since it takes time to prepare, they recommend ordering it early.

There are lots of chicken dishes here that go great with drinks. Of course, the yakitori is a highlight, and the Clay Pot rice is also very appealing. Personally, I recommend the dashimaki tamago (Japanese rolled omelet with dashi).

We ordered the All you can drink option and enjoyed a variety of dishes, and the tsukune (chicken meatball) assortment was the best. Everything else was tasty too, and it made for a very Manzoku dinner. It was a great meal.
