Popular izakaya (Japanese pubs) in Saga City, Saga Prefecture

Yakitori Torifumi

Yakitori Torifumi, about a 3-minute walk from Saga Station, is a yakitori restaurant where you can enjoy jukusei jidori (aged local chicken) and local sake brought in from all over Japan.

The stylish and calm interior has a hideaway feel, with elegant hinoki (Japanese cypress) counter seats.

The yakitori menu mainly uses jukusei kuro-satsuma-dori (aged Kuro-Satsuma chicken) and kuro-satsuma-dori (Kuro-Satsuma chicken). The owner, who trained for over 10 years in Tokyo and overseas, grills them over binchotan (high-grade charcoal).

Kuro-Satsuma chicken is rich and juicy, and it is said to taste good even after it cools.

In addition to local sake from Saga, they also stock a wide selection of sake sourced from around Japan, so many people use it as an izakaya (Japanese pub).

They also offer many a la carte dishes that pair well with drinks, and the "leva mousse (liver mousse)" and "iburigakko cream cheese (smoked pickled daikon with cream cheese)" are said to be especially good as snacks.

At Yakitori Torifumi, I enjoyed yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) carefully grilled to a fragrant finish with Japanese sake. Each skewer was grilled with care, crisp and fragrant on the outside, juicy on the inside, and packed with flavor. The aroma of charcoal gently spread through each bite and made the drinks go down easy. The owner's recommended Japanese sake paired perfectly with the food, with taste good enough to impress even serious food lovers.

タビホリック

This is a stylish, elegant restaurant with an upscale feel. The seating is counter only. The liver paste got the drinks flowing at a faster pace. The liver was cooked to perfection! The thigh meat had wonderfully crisp skin and juicy meat inside, which was great! It was also fun to see a few creative twists in the dishes!

You can enjoy fresh Saga-gyu (Saga beef) grilled right in front of you on a Teppan-yaki grill.

The "A5 Rank Saga-gyu Spencer roll Aburi" is juicy and packed with flavor. Topping it with uni (sea urchin) is said to boost the umami even more.

They also have a wide selection of carefully chosen lemon sours and local sake from Saga.

They also offer a wide range of izakaya-style dishes, and the nikushi (simmered skewers) that are slowly cooked let you enjoy the rich flavor of a slightly sweet and savory soy sauce based broth.

I was so eager for this izakaya to open that I visited right after opening time. They have a wide selection of Japanese sake, with a chart showing the characteristics of each one. From that list, I sipped Manrei while nibbling on sashimi, then added maitake (hen-of-the-woods mushroom) tree tempura, smashed cucumber, and an oden assortment, and for my second glass of Japanese sake I had Koimari Mae.

あぜりあ

I enjoyed every bite, feeling happy with each mouthful of nikushi (simmered skewers) like beef tendon and quail eggs, the sashimi assortment, furofuki daikon radish, and the melt-in-your-mouth pork. It was a very satisfying night in Saga. It was a great meal.

The creative skewers are just too good. You eat them with salt, tare sauce, and ponzu sauce, using each one differently〜Each skewer has its own tare, so double dipping is OK! I had stylish kushikatsu (deep fried skewers)〜The drink selection was great too.

Since they are famous for squid, I ordered the ika shumai (squid dumplings)! It was delicious! Next time, I’m going to eat Yobuko (a place name) squid. I also ordered a lime sour, and it was easy to drink with bits of fruit in it.

The interior was just so clean! The kushiyaki (grilled skewers) were carefully grilled and tasted great. What really surprised me was how skillfully they grilled the muneniku (chicken breast), making it very tender. And this matters too, the highball also had a proper, flavorful strength.

The restaurant mainly serves classic izakaya favorites such as fresh sashimi and meat dishes.

As for Saga-gyu (Saga beef), you can order Sirloin cap or Chateaubriand depending on what they have in stock. Since the menu lineup varies by day, some reviews said that each visit brings something new to look forward to.

They offer a food-only course and Banquet courses with All you can drink.

Every dish is carefully prepared, and each one is said to be delicious. The "sashimi assortment" is said to stand out for its bright colors and freshness.

This time, we ordered a course meal with All you can drink. The course included sashimi (raw fish slices), tempura, and more, and everything was delicious and went great with beer. It was a fun drinking party.

Saga Prefecture [Karatsu City]'s Popular Izakaya

Tengu Chaya

Tengu Chaya, about a 3-minute walk from Karatsu Station, is a restaurant where you can enjoy Karatsu specialties with local sake from Saga.

The interior of this three-story restaurant has a somewhat nostalgic feel. It offers zashiki (tatami seating), Private room, and Sunken kotatsu seating, so you can choose what suits the occasion.

Karatsu meibutsu (Karatsu specialty) "ika shumai (steamed squid dumpling)" is said to be fun to eat because of the texture of the thinly sliced squid. It also goes great with karashi (Japanese mustard).

The otoshi (small appetizer) dashimaki tamago (Japanese rolled omelet) is also said to have a soft, fluffy texture that shows the care put into making it.

The lineup of Saga local sake, Specially selected by the owner, is appealing because you can enjoy it based on your mood and taste. They also offer a full range of izakaya menu items that pair well with the drinks.

The “kujira (whale) tatsuta-age (Japanese-style fried)” is said to be crisp and tasty.

The ika shumai (squid dumplings), sashimi, and Kara-age were all really good♪The room had a Private room with Sunken kotatsu seating, so we could relax and take our time. It is a place I would like to visit again.

Karatsu has retro buildings and shops, and you can fully enjoy the fun atmosphere of a castle town. I wondered why this restaurant had mapo dofu (spicy tofu with meat sauce) on the menu, but at this taste and price, it was more than good enough. It was not very numbing, but it had a nice meaty feel.
