Yakitori restaurants within a 10-minute walk from Shin-Okubo Station

Uchoten

Uchoten is a yakitori (grilled chicken skewer) restaurant located a 2-minute walk from Shin-Okubo Station.

With nostalgic music playing, the interior feels cozy and comfortable. There are also seats with karaoke, and the place is said to be lively with many customers all the time.

Their carefully prepared yakitori uses Daisendori from Tottori Prefecture and Kinso-dori from Chiba Prefecture, and each skewer is said to be grilled with care over binchotan (high-grade charcoal).

The skewer assortment in the photo includes five kinds: thigh meat, negima, gizzard, skin, and Heart. The Heart is said to have a springy bite and a pleasantly crunchy texture.

They also offer a wide lineup of à la carte dishes, including “Jikasei Atsuage Nattogake (house-made deep-fried tofu topped with natto)”, “Nandeyanen Korokke (What the Heck Croquette)”, and “Tebasaki no Kara-age (1 piece)”.

The “Shoga Tappuri no Butaniku Shogayaki (ginger pork with plenty of ginger)” here is said to be an irresistible dish for ginger lovers, made with lots of sliced ginger.

おぱんちゅあたゃん

The recommendations are tsukimi tsukune (chicken meatball with egg yolk) and sasami (chicken tenderloin). The tsukimi tsukune was surprisingly meaty for tsukune, and even though I do not usually like tsukune that tastes like processed meat, I enjoyed this one. The sasami was moist with none of that usual dryness, and it had such a nice dashi aroma that it almost seemed as if dashi had been poured over it. I enjoyed every dish here.

かずきり

The interior is not that large, but it feels calm and comfortable. They offer a wide variety of kushimono (skewered items). There are many other dishes as well, and since each portion is not too large, it is best to order a variety and enjoy them as small bites while drinking.

Sekuwagaru

This ethnic restaurant is a 7-minute walk from Shin-Okubo Station and serves Nepal-style yakitori (grilled chicken skewers).

The spacious interior is filled with an exotic feel, decorated with Nepalese-style ornaments, and each table is equipped with an automatic tabletop charcoal skewer grill, which is another big draw since you can enjoy freshly grilled skewers anytime.

This is the representative Nepali dish sekuwa (grilled skewers) assortment, and the system lets you choose your favorite skewers such as pork, chicken, duck, and garlic.

The staff will tell you when they are cooked just right, so even first time visitors can enjoy them at their best.

"Fire Soup Momo" is one of the popular must-order items.

You enjoy momo (Nepalese dumplings), with juices spilling out like xiaolongbao, in a curry flavored soup. The presentation, with flames rising from the Hot Pot, has a big impact and really gets you excited.

コンテ。

This time, I picked pork, duck, lamb, sunagimo (gizzard), shrimp, and sausage. The sunagimo had a great crunchy texture and nice spice aroma, while the pork paired the rich flavor of its fat really well with the spices. The shrimp, though small, were nicely aromatic and went well with the spice aroma, making them a memorable dish.

It was just a short walk from Okubo Station, so I got there without any trouble. It was my first time trying Nepalese food, and I ordered the sekuwa (Nepalese grilled meat skewers) assortment. I could enjoy a variety of small skewers, the seasoning was just right, and they went great with beer. The restaurant had Nepalese being spoken all around, which gave it an international feel while still being comfortable. I’d like to come back again casually.

Wow, it was so good. I even got 2 extra servings of the palate cleansing grated daikon radish, and the dashi soy sauce was especially good. The kushiyaki (grilled skewers) came off the grill at just the right doneness and were served at their best moment, which is the nice thing about counter seats. To finish, the ramen was so good that I’d want to come back just for that alone.

Yakitori Izakaya Torizen Shinjuku Higashiguchi Ten, about a 9-minute walk from Shin-Okubo Station, is an izakaya where you can enjoy charcoal grilled yakitori with an All you can eat option.

The interior has a calm atmosphere, with table seating as well as Private rooms with doors. It is recommended for people who want to relax in a private space without worrying about other people looking at them.

You can also enjoy All you can eat authentic sumibiyaki (charcoal-grilled) yakitori slowly grilled over binchotan (high-grade charcoal).

The lineup is wide, with standard chicken thigh, negima (chicken and scallion skewer), tsukune (chicken meatball skewer), vegetable skewers, and creative skewers! Among them, the "bonjiri" is said to pack in the sweet richness of chicken fat and have an addictive taste.

Gyoza, perfect as a snack with drinks, is also All you can eat.

The filling is packed with vegetables such as onions, and they top it with sauces like grated ponzu sauce, yangnyeom, and tartar, so you can also enjoy comparing the different flavors. Some reviews also say the tomato basil and mentaiko mayo are good.

I ordered the All you can eat yakitori (grilled chicken skewers), and there were so many kinds of skewers that I never got tired of them. The taste was simply good, and the sauce in particular was just right, not too strong.

・Kara-age
The Kara-age was about the size of a child's fist. The coating was crunchy, and the meat inside was juicy. It was delicious. It went great with beer.

Yakitori restaurants from Shin-Okubo Station to the Higashi-Shinjuku Station area

Yakitori Toribian Shinjuku Honten

At Yakitori Torimian Shinjuku Honten, a popular spot, you can take your time enjoying carefully prepared yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) and wine in a calm space that makes you forget the bustle of Shin-Okubo and Shinjuku.

The interior, filled with the scent of hinoki (Japanese cypress), has the feel of a hideaway for adults with a white wood design. In addition to counter and table seating, it also has Semi-private room seating.

For its yakitori (grilled chicken skewers), the restaurant mainly uses Date-dori (Date chicken), Kyo Aka jidori (Kyoto red local chicken), and Hakata jidori (Hakata local chicken), adjusting the seasoning and grilling method for each different cut.

They grill it over Tosa binchotan (high-grade white charcoal from Tosa) so the flavor and moisture stay locked in, letting the aroma of the charcoal and the rich taste of the chicken fill your mouth.

This is their signature "Truffle and Foie Gras Takikomi Clay Pot Rice".

The rice is cooked in a broth made from chicken and bonito flakes, topped with foie gras, and finished with a performance where fresh truffle is sliced right in front of you. If you have any left over, they can make it into onigiri (rice balls) for Takeout.

These yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) are among the best I’ve ever had✨. Each skewer is carefully grilled over charcoal, giving it a fragrant aroma, juicy texture, and rich chicken flavor. Every bite feels impressive, and you can tell how much care and attention went into each skewer.

Yakitori Kemuri Japanese sake Specialty Shop

Yakitori Kemuri Nihonshu Senmonten, about a 10-minute walk from Shin-Okubo Station, is a place where you can enjoy yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) made with fresh morning-processed Daisendori and Japanese sake.

The interior is a stylish space with exposed concrete. Most of the seating is at the counter, making it easy to drop in for dinner.

They offer a wide selection of both standard cuts and rare cuts, and every one is said to be juicy and packed with flavor.

The "Yakitori Omakase 5-kind assortment" is an assortment of yagen nankotsu (Cartilage), Heart, negima (chicken and scallion skewer), and buta kashira (pork cheek), among others. The "Heart" has a springy texture and great flavor, making it a good snack to go with drinks.

The drink lineup, unique to a Japanese sake specialty shop, is also well regarded, and you can also enjoy a "Japanese sake 3-variety tasting set."

On one day, the three varieties were Kaika, Tengumai, and Chiyozuru. Kaika has a slight sweetness, Tengumai has a clean finish, and Chiyozuru is known for its rich aroma. They pair well with yakitori (grilled chicken skewers), and you may end up drinking a little too much.

Five yakitori skewers, grilled over binchotan (high-grade Japanese charcoal), crisp outside and tender inside. Every one of them is light, but still juicy. I wanted to eat more, but next came five vegetable skewers, which was nice when I had not been eating enough vegetables. Last were four kinds of tsukune (chicken meatball skewers): tare sauce, ume plum, yuzu kosho, and mentaiko. Dip them into the big egg yolk, and wow, so good. I like how the tasty fat gets washed away with a drink.

・Luxury tsukune (chicken meatball skewers) 4-skewer assortment
Each tsukune comes topped with tsukimi (raw egg yolk), which makes it fun to look at before you even take a bite. The sweet sauce has that classic good taste, the mentaiko (spicy cod roe) has a mild little kick, the yuzu kosho (yuzu pepper paste) has a fresh aroma, and the ume (plum) leaves a clean, refreshing finish. With 4 skewers, each one offers a completely different character, so it is fun to compare them as you eat! This is recommended!
