・Shrimp tempura Rice bowl
The shrimp tempura Rice bowl is hearty, with shrimp, seafood, and 7 kinds of vegetables. The freshly fried tempura is dipped in sauce in Kanto style, so it looks dark, but the flavor is not too strong and feels just right. Every piece of tempura is delicious, and I was satisfied to casually enjoy the taste of a high-end restaurant.

I’m not usually that into tempura (Japanese battered and deep-fried food), so I was wondering how it would be, but it went down so lightly that I was surprised I could eat this much! The tentsuyu (tempura dipping sauce) pairs with it really well. They also explained each of the other seasonings one by one, so I could enjoy everything and it all tasted great!

Every dish showed real creativity, and the look, aroma, and flavor were all memorable. In particular, the shrimp and coconut tempura was surprisingly delicious, so good that I could have kept eating it. To finish, the Clay Pot rice and the special TKG with tempura egg had an amazing combination of flavors, and a second helping felt almost certain…! The course structure and even the naming had great style, and I was in Manzoku from start to finish.

Rather than serving tempura centered on fish, each item includes shrimp and other seafood, but there are also many meat based tempura dishes, and the style here is to eat them with sauce. The pairing with the All you can drink beer, wine, and Japanese sake was a great match and worked really well. The tempura was light and didn’t feel heavy at all. The yurine (lily bulb) was sweet and tasty, almost like fruit. Between the tempura courses, they served sunomono (vinegared dish) and nibitashi (lightly simmered dish), so the meal never got repetitive and I enjoyed every bite to the end. I’ll stop by again.

・An Omakase course made with premium seasonal ingredients
Tempura starts with kuruma ebi (Japanese tiger prawns). It comes in two kinds, including one wrapped in oba (shiso leaf). The batter is light and crisp, and the shrimp are pleasantly springy. Kumamoto Silk Sweet has an intense sweetness. The sawara (Spanish mackerel) is mild yet full of flavor. The pairing of Brussels sprouts and karasumi (dried mullet roe) is surprising. The fresh juiciness and mellow saltiness work really well.

The nasu (eggplant)〜prosciutto〜 was eggplant tempura wrapped with prosciutto, and it was a fresh new combination that tasted great!

The “geso no kakiage (squid-leg tempura fritter)” in the photo is one of the two signature specialties. This tempura uses plenty of squid legs, and the texture of the geso, along with the aroma of beni shoga (pickled red ginger) and sakura ebi (tiny dried shrimp), makes it addictively tasty.

The other specialty is “niku-maki ten (meat-wrapped tempura),” where the flavor of the fillings is sealed in by meat. The fillings come in several kinds, including nira (garlic chives) and asparagus.

Tempura Ando

Tempura Ando serves light tempura fried in 100% extra virgin olive oil. It is located on the basement level of a building on Tamayamachi-suji, about (Each) 4 minutes on foot from Osaka Metro Namba Station.

The interior is full of Japanese charm, with only 8 counter seats made from a single slab of hinoki (Japanese cypress). It is by reservation only.

One of the charms is that every seat lets you enjoy the sounds and aromas while the tempura is being fried.

The EX virgin olive oil used for frying hardly soaks into the ingredients, which helps bring out their flavor as much as possible. The low-temperature cooking locks in umami, sweetness, and aroma. They are also said to pay close attention to the flour, eggs, water, and other ingredients.

They serve only the "Owner's Omakase tempura course," which starts at the same time for everyone. You can enjoy 21 items, from Appetizers made with seasonal ingredients to dessert. The photo shows the "Ebi-ten (shrimp tempura) hand roll," served as the final rice dish.

They also have a full drink menu, including Japanese sake that pairs well with tempura.

The course is a completely Omakase. It starts with a tasting of two kinds of shrimp, followed at a good pace by Japanese whiting, scallops, and seasonal vegetables. The most impressive of all is the satsumaimo (sweet potato), which takes an hour to prepare. Its rich, sticky sweetness melts on the tongue, going beyond tempura and into the realm of a high-end dessert.

The restaurant has a refined space with table seating. It is on the 8th floor of Osaka Takashimaya, so you can stop by easily while shopping.

The photo shows the "Wa Gozen set." This set comes with freshly fried tempura such as white fish, shrimp, and vegetables, along with sashimi and rice.

The tempura is said to be crisp, wrapped in the fragrant aroma of sesame. It is recommended to make a reservation for lunch.

Each Gozen set and course includes kakiage (mixed tempura fritter) made with small pieces of ingredients fried together. You can place it over the rice served at the end to make tenchazuke (tempura rice with tea broth) or a small tendon (tempura Rice bowl).

They also have a wide selection of wine, which is another big draw since you can enjoy pairing tempura with wine.

I had a chance to visit again for the first time in a while. I had the Jo Tenpura Zen (premium tempura set meal). It made me so happy to enjoy freshly fried tempura. I love that the tempura here is crisp and not greasy. It feels like I could eat as much of it as I want. You can get a refill of rice.

You can enjoy authentic tempura at reasonable prices. The interior is calm, but it does not feel formal at all. The food is excellent, and there is none of that heavy feeling of being overloaded with oil that tempura can sometimes have. I think anyone you bring here will be happy. You do not need to walk outside from the station, so you do not have to worry about the weather.

Recommended tempura restaurants in Osaka City, Osaka Prefecture [Kyobashi, OBP, and Morinomiya Area]

Osaka Tempura Genki

Osaka Tempura Genki, in a residential neighborhood a 5-minute walk from the south exit of JR Kyobashi Station, is the first Kansai restaurant of a tempura spot popular in Fukuoka Prefecture. You can casually enjoy freshly fried tempura made with seasonal ingredients.

The restaurant has counter seats where you can eat the tempura right after it is fried, as well as table seating recommended for groups.

A key feature here is that the batter, oil, temperature, and frying timing are all adjusted so each item is served in its best condition for the season.

The tempura is said to be light, mild, and easy to eat. Along with the classics, they also offer creative tempura such as "yangnyeom ebi-ten (Korean-seasoned shrimp tempura)," flavored with Korean seasonings.

At lunch, you can enjoy good value set meal menus that come with rice, miso soup, ika no shiokara (salted squid), and asazuke (lightly pickled vegetables). One of the draws is that they serve each piece of piping hot, crispy tempura freshly fried.

The recommended "Genki set meal" is a popular menu item that lets you enjoy tempura with 3 kinds of vegetables, shrimp, squid, white fish, and pork.

美味~いもん

They serve everything fresh out of the fryer and nice and crisp, so it tastes great when you dig in while it is still piping hot! It is the best! Personally, the sasami (chicken tender) and renkon (lotus root) were the highlights for me! The sasami was juicy, and the crisp crunch of the renkon had a really pleasant bite(^^)

The renkon (lotus root) is cut thick and has a satisfying bite. The onion has a soft and fluffy texture. The shrimp is on the slimmer side, but it has a nice springy bite and good flavor. The squid has a plump texture and tasty umami. The white fish is lightly done, soft and flaky. The final scallop comes with the skirt attached, packed with umami.

Tempura to Wine Kojima Kyobashi Ten

Tempura to Wine Kojima Kyobashi Ten is a tempura specialty restaurant located on the 1st floor of K Buratto, right by Kyobashi Station on the various lines. You can casually enjoy tempura made with seasonal ingredients and sommelier Special wines.

The casual izakaya-style interior has both counter and table seating.

At night, they offer both à la carte dishes and the “kisetsu no tempura course (seasonal tempura course).” The tempura menu is extensive, so many people seem to have a hard time choosing.

The “nori ikura canape” in the photo is a standout dish topped with ikura (salmon roe) from salmon or trout on top of tempura nori seaweed. The light tempura and the rich flavor of the ikura are said to be a perfect match.

At lunchtime, they offer a good value tempura set meal. They also have happy hour, so it is a great fit when you want to enjoy drinks during the day.

The photo shows the "Yasai-ten Teishoku" set meal, which is recommended for anyone looking for a healthy lunch. You can enjoy tempura made with seasonal vegetables, including eggplant and lotus root.

I ordered from the lunch menu. They served the tempura in two rounds, so I could enjoy it slowly while it was still freshly fried. The rice portion was also quite generous, and since the tendon (tempura Rice bowl) sauce was on the table, I could also make a tendon. I was also happy that there were various extra toppings to choose from. I liked the Camembert cheese best.

gauge

The food menu centers on tempura, but there is also a wide variety of izakaya menu items, and the drinks are reasonably priced. The crisp tempura can be enjoyed with tentsuyu (tempura dipping sauce) and various kinds of salt, and you can also enjoy pairing it with different drinks including wine. It looks like they are also open for lunch, so I think I’ll come by at noon as well.
