Surprisingly, there are quite a few chicken restaurants in Karuizawa, and a new one opened in January.
I decided to check it out right away.
It’s located along National Route 18, next to a drugstore, so it should be easy to find from Karuizawa Station.
I made a reservation since it was crowded when I passed by the day before.
The menu features various options based on rotisserie chicken, including roast chicken sandwiches, several types of pizza, and assorted sides.
They serve freshly roasted chicken from a specialized rotisserie machine, with sets starting from JPY 1,000 for 1/2 or 1/4 chicken, making it quite affordable.
Here’s what I ordered:
- Half Chicken Set (1/2 chicken) with rice or bread, soup, salad, and potatoes for JPY 1,500
- Pizza with Shinshu's Nozawa-nama and Lotus Root for JPY 1,500
- Various drinks
First up was the drink, followed by the soup, which was a chicken consomme-style broth with a strong chicken flavor, though a bit salty.
The rotisserie chicken is reportedly made with a special blend of herbs and served fresh.
Even though it was a half serving, it was quite filling, enough to share between two people.
While the taste wasn’t particularly noteworthy, the aroma of the herbs was complex and appetizing.
The meat had a slightly dry texture, and it would have been better if it had been juicier. When it comes to roasted chicken, the quality of the skin is essential, and the skin here lacked a bit of impact.
The pizza with Nozawa-nama and lotus root was an interesting combination, but I felt that the cheese and Nozawa-nama didn’t blend well together.
The lotus root didn’t showcase its unique texture either, making it a disappointing dish.
Overall, this restaurant hasn’t quite surpassed the level of a chain establishment.
