Karuizawa Ristorante Kobayashi has relocated and reopened in Karuizawa, a charming Italian restaurant nestled in a house surrounded by fields, with the majestic Mount Asama watching over it (pets allowed under certain conditions). 2023 July Relocation OPEN Limited to 4 groups per day A house restaurant with a stunning view of Mount Asama, nestled in a lush green field
Enjoy Roman cuisine in a private space with only two seats.Chef Takayoshi Kobayashi, with 40 years of experience in Italian cooking, has relocated from Meguro after falling in love with the ingredients of Shinshu. |
After navigating a narrow road where only two cars can barely pass, I entered an even more deserted path that could barely fit a single car, and soon spotted a charming restaurant.
We started our lunch at 12 PM. Managed by a husband and wife team, they only accommodate one or two groups a day, so reservations can be a bit tricky.

I was a bit surprised to find out that we had to take off our shoes and change into slippers at the entrance. Considering that it’s also their home, that makes sense.
Once seated in a private room decorated with antique Italian furniture, we enjoyed a lovely view outside.
The course was priced at JPY 12,000, tax included. When I made the reservation, we were already set up with one drink and a bottle of “Yusui” mineral water. It's quite interesting to get water served like this.
I ordered a non-alcoholic beer, “Suntory All-Free.”
My partner selected a no-additive wine from Nagano, “Sparkling Komoro City 'Man's Wine' Ryugan (Shallot-style, Charmat method).” It had a strong fizz, but the flavor was a bit mild, reminiscent of cider.
The meal began with an appetizer: homemade prosciutto and dried persimmons. The combination of the salty, Spanish-style prosciutto with the sweet dried persimmons was delightful. This prosciutto was made by Chef Kobayashi in a workshop at
