In October 2021, during my visit to Cabot Cove Museum Terrace, I learned that this place is set to become a complex facility for culture and lifestyle. The Cabot Cove itself is located in a renovated building that used to be a winery in Miyota, while the other buildings have a somewhat abandoned atmosphere.
In July 2022, it seems that the multi-use facility MMop has opened, and that's where CERCLE Plus from Harunire has newly established its store. (It appears that the official store name is CERCLE plus wine & deli.) Interestingly, the second floor was originally where Cabot Cove was located, but now it also houses a branch of STEAK HOUSE Feu, a related establishment of CERCLE Co., Ltd. (I wonder where the funding for that comes from?) By the way, Cabot Cove has moved to a different building on the same premises to continue operations.
Now, I was aware of Harunire's CERCLE, but I hadn’t had much luck visiting during opening hours. My impression was that they sell quite expensive deli items and wines.
Upon entering the Miyota location, it felt like a stylish kitchenware select shop. At the back, there’s a kitchen, an eat-in area, and a fairly spacious wine cellar.
Looking at the deli showcase, the selection seemed somewhat limited. The pâté de campagne was about JPY 700, which is reasonable.
I was told it’s fine to enter the wine cellar, so I took a peek. Unfortunately, most of the wines are European, primarily from France, with only a few local options available.
Prices vary widely, ranging from daily wines around JPY 3000 to high-end options belonging to the category of 'buy without checking the price.' I found a Merlot from Ruedebin in Tōmi, which I purchased along with the pâté.
I tried the pâté de campagne later that evening. It was quite nice—smooth with a fine texture, and the spices were elegantly balanced. This could definitely warrant a repeat purchase.
Overall assessment: I can’t say much since I haven’t tried any other deli products, but the pâté de campagne is of a very high standard. There seems to be a preconceived notion that everything is expensive, which makes me hesitant to explore more.
As for the wines, I might consider purchasing Japanese ones, since it seems like I could find others cheaper elsewhere.
Miyota and the neighboring Oiwake area are reportedly seeing an increase in relocation from outside families, particularly those with children, and more stores are emerging as new living bases. They’re apparently building a brand as a cultural hub, but it feels like just the beginning. I’m curious to see how it will evolve, but since sustaining such initiatives can be challenging, it'll depend on the local government.
Given the circumstances in this area, I wonder how well this store's offerings, which seem geared more towards vacation homeowners, will fare. Could it possibly be a hidden gem?
