In Karuizawa, mothers handcraft each donut for their children. No preservatives are added. The main store is located in Kanazawa, where they use the natural spring water from the sacred Mt. Hakusan. They focus on using fresh local ingredients. I wonder what kind of water they use in Karuizawa?
These donuts are not overly sweet, which is a key feature. They are light and easy to eat, but that also means they can be dangerous because you might end up eating too many.
The freshly made donuts are immediately frozen to retain their texture, so you can enjoy them just as they are when they come out of the fryer.
This time, I tried four varieties: "Oe Hama Soybean Kinako" (JPY 300, tax excluded), "Old-Fashioned Lemon Chocolate", "Egoma Donut Chocolate", and "Old-Fashioned Karuizawa Blueberry Chocolate" (JPY 324, tax included).
All of them have a gentle base flavor, with subtle variations in taste. As the title suggests, the lemon has a light hint of lemon flavor, and the blueberry doesn’t use any artificial flavors, making them easy to enjoy.
I haven’t tried it yet, but I’ve heard that in the summer, they can be delicious right out of the freezer when eaten cold. It seems that warming them up in a toaster is also an option. This time, I’ll just stick to trying them as they are. Next time, I might experiment with those other methods.
