Old Fashioned Caramel Chocolate - JPY 270, tax Included
During spring break in Karuizawa, I visited this lovely shop located near the entrance of a charming street lined with popular shops, cafes, and eateries in Old Karuizawa on the former Nakasendo road. This delightful store specializes in additive-free donuts, created with the intention of providing safe snacks for children by a caring mom.
As I entered, the spacious kitchen, reminiscent of a small factory, showcased a variety of donuts being made. Venturing further inside, I found an array of old-fashioned donuts along with cute merchandise featuring the store's characters. There's also a lovely eat-in space set up with school desks and chairs in the courtyard.
Since I wanted to enjoy exploring Old Karuizawa, I opted for takeout and savored the donuts at home.
The selection was abundant, primarily focusing on different icings atop the old-fashioned base. In terms of taste, the texture of the old-fashioned donut was remarkably soft, standing out from the coarser textures of others I’ve had before. This one was moist and gentle on the palate, which made me wonder if they fry at a lower temperature.
However, it didn’t feel greasy, and the lack of dryness was quite intriguing. The caramel chocolate icing was perfectly sweet, pairing fantastically with bitter drinks like coffee. Overall, it was simply delicious.
But the standout feature was undoubtedly the appealing design of the store's logo and the delightful aesthetics of the other products displayed.
