Located in Kyu-Karuizawa Ginza, this shop specializes in chestnut sweets from Obuse.
There are many delicious and cute options, making it perfect for souvenir shopping.
On the left upon entering, there is a CAFE SAKU G Karuizawa branch, where the sweets topped with adorable monaka (rice cake) shells looked delightful.
Here’s what I tried:
- Shinshu Limited Arukuma Chestnut Monaka: JPY 410
- Bear Monaka with Red Bean Paste: JPY 324
- Bear Monaka: JPY 356
- Obuse Milk Bear Monaka: JPY 432
- Obuse Rakugan with Chestnut Flavor (8 pieces): JPY 297
- Chestnut Rice: JPY 864
I enjoyed them at home with some cold tea and iced coffee.
The Shinshu Limited Arukuma Chestnut Monaka features a cute shell shaped like a bear carrying a large chestnut in both hands while wearing a backpack! The filling with crushed chestnuts is also delicious.
The Bear Monaka with Red Bean Paste allows you to fill it with a soft red bean paste yourself. I prefer a firmer paste, but the shell is crispy and tasty. However, both shells have faces, so I thought it would be nice if one had a back view instead.
The Bear Monaka was delicious with chestnut filling.
The Obuse Rakugan with Chestnut Flavor is thin and crispy, making it perfect for enjoying with matcha, Japanese tea, or coffee.
The Chestnut Rice was featured on ZIP!'s "Asami Mizuto's Breakfast with Friends." It is made with Japanese glutinous rice and domestic chestnuts, filled with plenty of soft-cooked chestnuts. It’s easy to prepare—just heat it in the microwave, making it a great souvenir option.
Next time, I’d like to try different sweets and visit the café!
