It was a bit warm, but perfect weather for cycling, so I decided to ride around Karuizawa. I wasn't too hungry yet for lunch, so I stopped by Karuizawa Bookstore for a break.
I thought it would be nice to grab something to take away and eat in a park. As I entered the store, I decided to buy a scone (JPY 300 tax included). I noticed some sandwiches in the lower display case, and as I was about to buy one, I was taken aback by the price—"Wha-what? One thousand yen?!" I wondered. Upon closer inspection, it read "Pulled Pork Sandwich (JPY 1000 tax included)."
Ah, that’s the BBQ dish you eat in a bun; a Southern American traditional dish. I initially misunderstood the term "pulled" as "to pull" instead of "to shred." Nostalgic memories came flooding back, but I thought, why not try it? So, I took the plunge and purchased it along with the scone for a total of JPY 1300.
I found a place to sit and bought a drink to go with it. As I opened the bag, an enticing smoky aroma filled the air. It smelled delicious.
I took a bite... and what? The meat was tender and had a wonderful melt-in-your-mouth texture. What’s this sweetness? Oh, roasted onions! These are tasty too, and the bread isn’t just any ordinary bread; is that adzuki bean?... It’s delicious! Overall, it was incredibly tasty with perfect balance.
What is this? I became intrigued and noticed it was labeled "Smokemanship" on the bag... Huh? Is this a pun? A twist on "Sportsmanship"... I see... or maybe not... Hmm, what's going on here?
Upon further research, I discovered there's a take-out shop in Nakakaruizawa called "Smokemanship". I didn’t know about it... Sorry! They also serve pulled pork, slow-smoked pork belly.
And to top it off, this sandwich has been supervised by Chef Tani from "Le Mange Tsu" and the bread comes from "Signifiant Signifie", a former rare delight that’s no longer available at Takashimaya Nihonbashi or Isetan Shinjuku.
I can't believe such a thing was here... I completely apologize for being unaware, and honestly, the scone flew right out of my mind.
When I finally tried the scone, it was perfectly good, freshly made in the store. I shouldn't have underestimated it (though that expression feels a bit old-fashioned).
It felt like experiencing something ordinary yet extraordinary. They say it’s a limited item available until September 28, so I’d love to go back for another taste.
