Original products make for fun souvenirs
Needless to say, for both the 'pseudo' Karuizawa residents and the real locals, TSURUYA is a convenient supermarket that's easy to use.
Inside the spacious store, you can find not only a variety of vegetables but also a great selection of alcoholic beverages, mainly beer.
Moreover, it’s delightful to see the extensive range of TSURUYA's original private brand products.
On my first visit, I bought essentials like water, coffee (featuring Maruyama Coffee from the TSURUYA brand), yogurt, and eggs, which are part of my food infrastructure.
Then, later, I looked forward to enjoying the private brand items I purchased once I got home.
The TSURUYA original products I got included:
- Maruyama Coffee Shinshu Matsumoto Blend and Gunma Blend
- Coffee karinto made with Maruyama Coffee
- Jams like Cinnamon Apple Butter and Chestnut Butter
- Bottled nameko mushrooms, perhaps for snacking?
- Shinshu Koya Tofu (which my partner bought)
- Massaman Curry (in retort pouch), can you believe this?
- Beni Haruka (dried sweet potato from Ibaraki for some reason)
- Pizza (either Margherita or Quattro Formaggi)
Wow, I bought so much!
In the end, I found myself bringing back a lot, which is pretty typical.
Ultimately, this time, I made two bulk purchases.

Dining out in Karuizawa can get quite expensive, so I find Tsuruya to be very convenient. This location feels more casual compared to others, likely because not many seasonal residents are around (you can tell by the parked cars).
While I sometimes purchase regular groceries, I particularly enjoy Tsuruya's original products, like the yam wasabi pickles made with local vegetables. The original items are diverse, but my top picks are the Tsuruya Original Blends of Maruyama Coffee: "Shinshu Matsumoto" and "Jōshū Gunma."
Additionally, they have original coffee karinto made with Maruyama Coffee. Although very tasty, the portion size is small and it's a bit pricey.
Another handy item is their chilled pizza, which is easy to prepare in the toaster oven and surprisingly delicious. Seasonal treats include yam wasabi pickles, but their short shelf life can be a drawback. Still, it's one of my favorites.
So, this place has become a must-visit spot when I'm in the Karuizawa area. Shopping at Tsuruya makes you feel like a local resident of Karuizawa (even if it's technically in Oyamada...).
