Opened in March 2014! Enjoy the local specialty, Sauce Katsu Don, at our Karuizawa location! Known locally as "Sauce Katsu Don."
In the local area of Shinshu Komagane, when customers visit or for celebrations, we enjoy unique local dishes, with the most popular being "Sauce Katsu Don." This dish is loved by both adults and children alike. Nowadays, when asked about Sauce Katsu Don, everyone mentions "Meijitei." Originally, it was a Japanese restaurant specializing in kaiseki and banquet cuisine, featuring a live fish tank. The chefs prepare the Sauce Katsu Don with great care, from sourcing ingredients to meticulous preparation. The tender and flavorful pork loin, sourced from the local Shinshu region, combined with the restaurant's homemade sauce creates an unforgettable taste that you won't want to miss. |
Located in the outlet mall in front of JR Karuizawa Station, this branch of Meiji Tei is a convenient stop with parking available. The original location in Komagane is famous for its generous sauce rice bowls, and I had always wanted to visit it. However, upon discovering this branch, I decided to stop by first. I visited on a weekend evening and was able to enter without waiting since it was close to closing time. The interior is compact, featuring both counter and table seating, and I was shown to a table.
I ordered:
○ Ebi Hire Don (Shrimp Tenderloin Rice Bowl)
JPY 2,190, tax included
○ Mini Seiryu Don and Shinshu Soba Zaru Set
JPY 2,120, tax included
While the most popular dish is undoubtedly the sauce katsu don, I was tempted by the size of the shrimp in the photo and opted for the Ebi Hire Don instead. It was absolutely delicious! The shrimp were large and succulent, and the sauce tenderloin cutlet paired perfectly with the mild sauce, making it rich yet not overwhelming. I usually prefer katsu that is covered in egg because I find sauce katsu can become monotonous, but this one was different. It remained tasty until the last bite. The generous serving of cabbage on top was also a nice touch. As expected from Meiji Tei, I definitely want to visit the original location now. The zaru set included a rice bowl with Shinshu Alps salmon and ikura, along with Shinshu soba. I had a little taste of this as well, and it was quite good, but I was so impressed by the deliciousness of the sauce katsu don that I didn’t pay much attention to the other dishes.
