Nestled quietly in the serene streets of Karuizawa, China Restaurant Ippinshan is a hidden gem known for its authentic Chinese cuisine. With a diverse menu and skilled techniques, it offers dishes that provide high satisfaction without the typical tourist prices.
On this visit, we ordered a wide range of items from dim sum to main dishes. The assorted appetizers were delightful, especially the grilled char siu, which was exceptional. Its smoky flavor and rich taste surpassed even some famous restaurants in Tokyo. The spring rolls had a perfectly creamy filling, while the pork shumai and shrimp dumplings showcased meticulous preparation.
The classic Chinese dishes were also of high quality. The stir-fried large shrimp with yellow chives and vegetables highlighted the plumpness of the shrimp and the crispness of the vegetables, making it a top-tier dish. The sweet and sour pork featured a crispy, fragrant coating that paired beautifully with the rich sauce, creating a harmonious blend with the vegetables.
To finish off, we ordered char siu fried rice and a mixed seafood yakisoba. Both were simple yet exceeded expectations; the fried rice was fluffy and aromatic, while the yakisoba was deliciously coated in a vegetable-rich sauce. The homemade almond tofu for dessert was made from real apricot seeds, offering a unique creaminess and fragrance.
For drinks, we started with a medium-sized Ebisu draft beer, followed by local sake from Saku City, including Kanbaku and Chikugonishiki. Additionally, they offered rare Shaoxing wine and Kame Chinnen, making it easy to pair drinks with the meal.
**Overall Comment**
While it may lack flashiness, each dish is of high quality, providing a reassuring sense that nothing will disappoint. This restaurant offers a level of cuisine that surpasses typical tourist Chinese food, making it a truly outstanding and cost-effective dining experience loved by both locals and tourists alike.
