This hotel is located in a quiet area about a 10-minute walk from Karuizawa Station (across from Tokyu Harvest Club).
While the name Marroad might evoke "Marroad Inn," the "Hotel Marroad" offers a higher quality experience than that.
Apart from Karuizawa, there is also a Hotel Marroad in Hakone. The facilities show some age, but the staff service is exceptional, ensuring a pleasant stay. (Please note, being an older building, there are fewer power outlets in the rooms and it is not wheelchair accessible.)
During my recent two-night stay, I found this hotel to be remarkably affordable for a summer visit in Karuizawa, approximately JPY 16,000 per night including breakfast.
While it takes about 10 minutes to walk from Karuizawa Station, the hotel offers a free shuttle service between the hotel and the station until 6 PM. This service is incredibly convenient. It's not strictly scheduled; you can request a ride at the front desk whenever you need it, and they will quickly take you to the station. You can also call the hotel from Karuizawa Station, and they will come to pick you up right away.
This service can be utilized multiple times a day, making it very convenient. However, be aware that it’s over 10 minutes on foot from the hotel to Old Karuizawa Ginza. There is a bus stop in front of the hotel (located within the Tokyu Harvest Club) for private bus services to Old Karuizawa Ginza.
On this visit, I only used the accommodation and breakfast. During busy periods, breakfast is served as a Japanese and Western buffet. During regular periods, you can choose between "Japanese" and "Western" options. Both are served in the same restaurant, so it suits groups with mixed preferences.
External guests can also enjoy breakfast for JPY 2,530 (tax included). Although I was staying on a breakfast-inclusive plan, I would say the cost is relatively reasonable for a resort breakfast.
Breakfast Buffet:
The menu includes typical Western dishes such as egg dishes, sausages, bacon, salads, fruits, and granola, alongside traditional Japanese items like grilled fish, obanzai (Japanese side dishes), porridge, and miso soup.
While there aren't many standout items, it’s a classic breakfast buffet with good quality ingredients. I particularly enjoyed the creamy yogurt, which I had to refill several times.
Japanese Breakfast:
The Japanese breakfast includes grilled fish, obanzai, egg dishes, and grilled seaweed, with additional common options like local vegetable salad and seasonal fruit, finishing off with coffee. The grilled fish was mackerel, which was perfectly cooked with a nice level of fat.
Now, regarding the hotel rooms, since the building is old, as mentioned earlier, there is a very limited number of power outlets.
Those needing to charge multiple devices at night might find it challenging. The rooms and hotel are also not wheelchair accessible, so if you have someone with mobility issues in your group, be cautious.
