Located a 15-minute walk from Karuizawa Station along the old Nakasendo road, this cafe bar is a long-established establishment that has been operating for nearly half a century run by a warm-hearted couple. The cocktails are served in an Old Fashioned style, and the interior has a cozy, wooden design.
Since there was some time before my return bus, I decided to stop by another place—a local, long-standing bar along the old Nakasendo road.
The sign is posted on the side of the road, and the bar is nestled among lush trees. Inside, the tables are spaced comfortably apart and there’s a terrace seating area as well. Since I was alone, I was seated at the counter.
The menu features a wide array of spirits and cocktails. There are also light snacks listed on a blackboard on the wall. I started with cheese and wine, anticipating a cocktail to finish off.
The Mimolette cheese is priced at JPY 2,200 per plate, which is a bit on the high side, but it was plentiful and delicious, definitely not enough to satisfy with just one glass.
・Sidecar JPY 1,300
Served generously in an Old Fashioned glass, this cocktail has an excellent balance of lemon tartness and Cointreau, reminiscent of a refreshing orange cocktail.
As you sip, the presence of brandy emerges, providing a pleasant mouthfeel while being a robust spirit at the same time.
The couple who runs the bar were very gentle in their service, and while I enjoyed my drink at the counter, they shared fascinating stories about the bar’s history and local information.
(* ̄ー ̄) I think it’s a great spot to relax and enjoy a drink.
