A house restaurant |
I have been visiting Karuizawa several times a year for over 30 years.
Most of those visits have been during peak seasons like Golden Week and Obon, so I always just passed by this restaurant, admiring the long lines.
I sometimes caught a whiff of herbaceous aromas from the restaurant, leading me to imagine that while it has a local Chinese food vibe, it might surprisingly have authentic flavors that could be a bit peculiar for some. (In the end, it turned out to be a pleasantly typical local Chinese restaurant.)
On a Saturday afternoon in early October, I passed by and noticed there was no line outside!
Excitedly, I parked at a nearby hourly parking lot (JPY 700 flat rate until 6 PM) and went in with my family of three.
We ordered stir-fried meat with wood ear mushrooms, spicy garlic noodles, fried rice, and daikon cakes.
The soup wasn’t anything special, but it had a comforting taste. It was on the lighter side.
The stir-fry had a slightly stronger flavor.
I particularly enjoyed the fried rice. It was extremely simple, yet had a well-balanced flavor without any overpowering elements. The texture was just right—not too dry and not too mushy. (Though I forgot to take a picture, haha!)
In a touristy area like Karuizawa, a delicious local Chinese restaurant like this is truly a gem.
I hope this place continues to thrive for a long time.
