This is a supermarket in Nagano that I always visit several times when I'm in Karuizawa. It's known as the largest and best supermarket in the Karuizawa area, which can lead to heavy crowds during the summer vacation period. However, it's a very attractive place due to its wide range of Tsuruya original products and local Nagano ingredients. The parking lot is spacious, but unfortunately, there are no shaded spots, which is a concern when bringing a dog. Inside the store, you can find Mikado Coffee and Hanakōka sweets, adding an extra layer of enjoyment to your shopping experience.
It's the perfect store for those looking to stock up for their vacation homes, with a great selection of fresh and affordable local produce. The vegetables are especially fresh and impressive, and the fish, including local Nagano carp, offers something unique. However, for visitors from the Kanto region, the standout items are the jams, butters, jellies, and juices that make great souvenirs. My favorite this year has been the fruit butters, including apple butter, lemon butter, and black sesame butter. Tsuruya has always had a fantastic selection of original jams, but it seems like these butter varieties are a more recent addition. They're richer than ordinary jams, and the apple butter, when paired with pork dishes, greatly enhances the overall flavor—it's like a gourmet substitute for apple sauce. Another must-try is Tsuruya's 'Marugoto Jelly,' which is perfect for both personal enjoyment and as gifts. This jelly, filled with chunks of fruit and gentle in flavor, is something you won't find anywhere else. Lastly, make sure to grab the 'Maruyama Coffee Tsuruya Original Blend' to take home.
With the nearby Miyota store, you can enjoy the variety in product selection compared to this Karuizawa location. At the Miyota store, you'll find plenty of local ingredients like rhubarb and beets, making it a delightful experience to shop. Using both stores enhances the joy of your visit.
