About a 30-minute drive from Karuizawa Station, this café is nestled in a somewhat secluded spot at the foot of Mount Asama, making it a perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle.
The place is run by two elderly ladies, so the pace is slower. But that allows us to relax and take our time as well.
We visited as a group of six colleagues from work. Unfortunately, it seems we filled the place to capacity... my apologies.
While we couldn't see Mount Asama from the window, the peaceful rural views were very pleasant.
I ordered the café's unique strawberry shortcake "Gâteau Fraise" (JPY 480, tax included) along with a "Coffee" (JPY 460, tax included), which comes with a discount if you order them as a set.
After a wait of about 20 minutes, it didn't feel too long since I was chatting with friends. The appearance of the "Gâteau Fraise" initially made me think it had a tart base, but it turned out to be a genoise (fluffy sponge cake) with strawberry syrup injected inside.
The whipped cream and the genoise both had a gentle, comforting flavor. Overall, the sweetness was moderate, but the syrup added a strong sweet and sour accent.
The coffee was on the lighter side, with an American style.
I also tasted the seasonal "Strawberry Parfait" (S size, JPY 800, tax included) a little, which was delicious with sweet, cold vanilla ice cream alongside the gentle whipped cream and slightly tangy cream cheese. Of course, local strawberries were delightful as well.
Though I don't want to share this serene spot too widely, it's such a calming space that I feel it would be wrong to keep it to myself. I think I’ll have to openly recommend it. Visiting on a clear day is highly recommended.
While I also love the café "La Teie" in front of the station, it’s only open from Thursday to Sunday. So if I crave sweets on a clear Monday to Wednesday, it looks like I’ll be heading here.
