I took a day off during the week to visit Karuizawa. It tends to get crowded on weekends.
Unfortunately, it was a rainy day. It was pouring, and I was hoping to enjoy the refreshing atmosphere.
Well, at least it might be less crowded, I thought, and headed to Harunire Terrace.
However, to my surprise, it was so crowded! It was a struggle just to park the car. Who said it would be empty on a rainy weekday? Oh right, that was me...
Once I entered the area, it was lunchtime, and every restaurant had a line. My wife mentioned that there was a place where you could get wine, but I was the designated driver. So I told her to go alone.
The space wasn’t very large, and after looking around, I was drawn to one particular restaurant. The picture of a large tempura shrimp on soba was too tempting to resist.
Since all the places had lines, I was ready to queue. However, there wasn’t any distinct line; everyone was waiting in a disorganized manner.
That meant they probably had a system for writing down names inside, but when I entered, there was nothing like that.
Though people weren’t forming a line, it seemed they were waiting in turns. After a while, a staff member came by and started asking for names in order.
It was fine after I had been waiting for a while, but at first, it was hard to tell whose turn it was. It’s a system that works because it’s Japan.
By the time I was finally seated, I was starving and ordered the tempura soba.
The atmosphere was stylish and very "Karuizawa," with jazz playing in the background. There were terrace seats, but even though it was summer, the rain made it feel a bit chilly, so the sliding windows were closed and it wasn't open.
I've made quite a long preamble, but it's time to review the food.
My unrefined palate may not notice the subtlety of the soba's flavor, but the texture and soup were delightful, and it was simply delicious.
The tempura was also tasty, with a pleasant saltiness. I wish I had asked where the salt was from. I discovered how delicious tempura bell peppers can be! Although the large shrimp was nothing particularly special, it had a nice aroma and was tasty. The soba-yu felt a bit diluted.
The price was a bit on the higher side, but it did deliver an appropriate level of satisfaction.
